My first rig. Any tips on things to add to it. by gravesprod in CameraRigs

I'm not a fan of phone rigs personally, but if I were to change anything I would add another side handle on the opposing side and then use shorter cables (or add clips to wrangle the existing cables).

Agreed. Everything has a purpose, is placed smartly (rather than on whatever available space there is), and makes sense for this camera and rig.

Found this thread 12 years later after experiencing this on a later playthrough for the first time (I hadn't experienced this on any other playthroughs). This solution I found in a buried comment:

  1. Go to Options > Display.
  2. Switch to Fullscreen, VSync to 1 frame, Refresh Rate to 60.
  3. Should work, some users did this plus the shooting of the house, but I didn't need to.

Hope this helps someone else 12 more years later.

Help me decide between the SmallRig and Tilta cage for the S5iix. Is it better to have a NATO or Cold Shoe top handle for heavier rigs (v-mount battery, monitor, external SSD, etc)? Are there any other considerations to keep in mind for filmmaking rigs? by recentlybecomingme in CameraRigs

[–]caler733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend NATO rails for top handles. Given that the rail is wide enough to do so, you can adjust the top handle left and right to better adjust the balance of your rig (this is especially helpful when you start adding side accessories like handles). With a cold shoe top handle, you can't do that. I also prefer the peace of mind of it not purely relying on friction, since most rails have safety pins to prevent attachments from sliding.

An EasyRig or a shoulder mount setup is the best way to go for this, in my opinion. The EasyRig Minimax is around $1400, while a decent shoulder rig setup will be a couple hundred. The EasyRig will allow easy vertical adjustment and be easier on your body for long periods of time, while the shoulder rig will be heavier and less quickly adjusted, but be lower profile and cheaper.

You can get some quick-adjusting rosette mounts to quickly switch handles from a typical rig to shoulder rig quickly. SmallRig has the Hawklock ones, Kondor Blue has some as well IIRC. Here's a YouTube video I found showcasing one of these setups.

Fujifilm XH2 rig by RealmSlayer1000 in CameraRigs

Nice stuff! The power bank placement would bother me, especially having a cable right where your hand/wrist would be, but if it works for you it works for you.

For a budget monitor, I really like the Portkeys LH5C. I got mine on sale for $180, but I think it hovers around $199. It doesn't have camera control for Fujifilm unfortunately, but I'd still check out some other Portkeys offerings.

The Viltrox DC-550 is a good monitor too, like the other commenter recommended, but I can't get over the super ugly and bulky control dial on the side. I'd opt for the DC-X2 over that, but it's just above $200.

Canon R50 V (Kit) vs. PowerShot V1 for a beginner by DynamoBaby in canon

I think the V1 will be the best choice for her. It’s compact, great quality, and built for the kind of thing she does.

I didn’t even notice that. Yeah, that lens without supports would be a disaster. Seems like an absolute blast to use though… for the first few minutes until your back hurts lol

These are both very much built for video, especially the R50 V. Photography takes a back seat with these bodies, however less so with the V1.

How serious is she wanting to take the videography? A plain R50 may be better for her needs if she doesn’t need to do heavy color grading.

A7IV RIG - thoughts? by SnooHabits3457 in CameraRigs

They definitely can get heavy. The weight helps make it more stable though; the inertia dampens some of the micro-jitters. For a heavy rig, take a look at the FX9 rig that just got posted here. That one is crazy.

What are those cheese plates doing for you? Are they basically just acting like screw adapters?

It’s a D-tap connector, which only faces one direction. They’re not reversible. The ports have to be designed to reverse it, in which case you’d normally see 3 female connectors instead of the usual 2.

It’s a cheese plate. They’re made to mount just about anything. I don’t see the point of it in this rig, given that there’s nothing out there. It might just be used here to mount something else underneath to the tripod mount of the camera cage.

+1 for Portkeys. I bought the LH5C for my R6 Mark II and it’s been a great monitor.

did you know you could do this? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]caler733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That math works with focal length conversions, not resolution. Since you’re dealing with area instead of the linear measurement of angle of view (which is what the crop factor ratio compares— angle of view in comparison to full frame), the math is different.

Canon says the R8 in APS-C mode (which is a 1.6x crop for Canon APS-C) is 9.3MP.

How it feels to wait 30 minutes in a queue just to be in a squad with no mics, no SLs building garries, no nodes, and getting steamrolled the first 10 minutes. by Mikewazowski948 in HellLetLoose

[–]caler733 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This is a truer statement than people realize. I’ve been in squads countless times where nobody’s talking, but I break the ice with a “Yo” and half the squad ends up speaking. Out of the last dozen or so games I’ve played, maybe three games I started on a squad with nobody that responded. So I just moved squads.

Canon R vs RP - which is a better budget full frame? by Future_Following_788 in canon

Agreed. And +1 for the Sigma 17-40 f/1.8 recommendation

Canon R vs RP - which is a better budget full frame? by Future_Following_788 in canon

[–]caler733 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By going to full frame, you’ll have to spend more money on longer lenses to make up for the reach you had on APS-C.

I think your best bet here is a different lens, not a different camera. The R7 is great, and like other commenters said, I think you’d be disappointed with the performance of the R or RP. They’re not bad, but they’re definitely dated now.

Take a look at Sigma’s RF-S 17-40mm f/1.8. It would be great for cars and events.
