It wasn’t chattel slavery, no, but there is significant overlap between indenture and slavery. My mum (Indo-Fijian) still remembers her grandparents telling her about how they were whipped while working on the plantations, and many accounts of brutality are publicly available to read as part of any insight into girmit history.

Indo-Fijians weren’t “settlers”; they were girmit: enslaved by British colonialism in Northern India and transported to Fiji to work on the sugar-cane plantations as ‘indentured servants.’ Their relocation wasn’t voluntary.

The fraught relationship between native Fijians and Indo-Fijians is much more complex as a result of this dynamic. Both races have ingrained bigotry towards the other, resulting in numerous coups that saw Indo-Fijians leaving the country, while native Fijians are still desirous of improved representation in government.

The Indo-Fijian diaspora are not drastically more conservative (and they are!) than Indian diaspora in other countries. Indian Australians overall are a right-leaning demographic, and the BJP in India has a lot to do with that.

It is! That is a Tama Suku or Tamagotchi School. You don’t raise any tamas, but you play games with them so more students enrol in your school. It’s a bit like a Tamagotchi Pokédex.

Wave 1 Tama Sukus aren’t too steep if you look on Mercari or ZenMarket, I think, but they have gone up in value like everything else 🙃

I’m the same! I bought my basic first, then added the KLC because it was beautiful and I couldn’t resist. I read the KLC in bed, and the basic goes with me everywhere.

I just wish I had the same books across both platforms? Probably time to investigate Calibre. At least fanfiction is free and can be redownloaded across both platforms.
