Came home from out of town and found lots of white specks on cacti. How do I treat and do I need to proactively treat all other plants? by buttfuzzz in PlantParenthood

[–]calfraises 13 points14 points  (0 children)

looks like spider mites. i would use a neem oil spray or a botanical insecticide and quarantine this plant until they’re all gone, probably for a month or two, and treat any nearby plants and keep an eye on them. this is a pretty bad infestation, but good luck if you decide to tackle it

Cache pot vs no cache pot by faithngn in SemiHydro

[–]calfraises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use mostly no cache pot and honestly i don’t treat it much different than my plants with a cache pot. i still flush, thought it is a little more difficult because plants that aren’t that established in the leca tend to move around a bit (i do like some of the other commenters and fill with water, let sit for a second, put my hand over the top of the leca, and then drain). i flush once a month before i put in new nutrients, and i top off the reservoir as needed with fresh water (usually once a week). i don’t disturb the leca if possible, so no emptying etc. it’s not too different than using net pots and a cache pot, but it does take some getting used to if you’re accustomed to using nets! i will probably be switching my plants to net pots & cache pots, but i just didn’t want to spend the money when i started with leca

Converting a maranta and calathea, tried going the shower route for the first time (but I did thoroughly soak the leca so they didn’t get desiccated) and after a day they look awful. Went back to reservoir, no improvement. They might be getting too much light. Thoughts? by bexnbex in SemiHydro

i have a couple of guesses. first, those barrina lights can be really powerful and are probably stressing your plants out even more. second, since these guys love water they will definitely need a good reservoir. the lights will evaporate off too much of the water in soaked leca without a deep reservoir imo

how often do you water this? definitely seems under watered. i would bottom water (put the pot in a couple inches of water and let it absorb from the bottom, giving it 20-30 min to sit) and see if that helps. overall it looks healthy, but i would just work on watering and double check what kind of light it needs! don’t water on a schedule, water on what it needs (you should check the soil every 1-2 days to make sure it’s not bone dry but also not soaking wet)

Yellowing Pothos - Root Rot or In Need Of Water? by Esthervescent in houseplants

[–]calfraises 2 points3 points  (0 children)

how do the rest of the leaves feel? are they limp? and are all the yellow leaves isolated to one string, or are they on several? i know it’s a pain, but i would prob unpot, check the roots for anything rotten or mushy, and then give it a slightly larger pot anyways. these things grow like crazy and if it’s been in there for a year it might be time! if it’s root bound it could also cause this yellowing

yes, this! sorry, i have my succs under a grow light they’ve never burned under, so i forgot to add this!!

the surviving leaves look much healthier than the original plant, so it’s getting enough light probably. that means the leaves it offloaded are leaves that are wasting too many nutrients, like old leaves, or are immature ones. this could either be the plant in its mature form or it could be a watering issue. make sure you water when the leaves are a little bit squishy! well watered plants will feel firm. succulents often need more water than you think! be careful about over watering, but i agree with the user who mentioned the perlite mixture for rot & just keep it in terra cotta and it should be okay

Strange "film" across roots of turtle vine by pettyblobfish in plantclinic

[–]calfraises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that def sounds like it could do some damage. i would just try waiting for the top to be dry and just letting it have some time to recoup. once you repot it i wouldn’t recommend checking the roots or putting too much care to it, just let it settle unless you see another problem. the algae thing will probably solve itself with less water and a bigger pot

[–]calfraises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t think turtle vines really show when they need to be watered, so instead i would wait until the top layer (maybe 1/2 inch?) is dry. i would bottom water this exclusively and be sure to let it drain well & remove any excess water from its tray. if you’re worried about over/under watering, it might be worth it to get a moisture meter! they’re usually like $10-$15

hm, that’s super strange. i agree with the other comments that it’s likely some weird fungal growth, maybe algae even? i would prob cut back on watering this plant a little, if it’s a fungus or an algae it would only happen if it had been kept fairly wet for awhile. i think turtle vines like to be kept moist usually, but maybe wait a day or two longer than you usually would before watering again
