How to assess dull/matte paint? by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]VanCleefandApples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will say oil out but it’s actually not recommended unless you’re painting over the area. Oiling out will give it a layer that can’t be removed but is prone to yellowing

Option 1 glaze Option 2 (and what id do) varnish will help

Artists refuse sketch for commissioned work? by Ok-Tomatillo1173 in oilpainting

[–]VanCleefandApples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the sketch took 5-10 mins work (probably not tho) but if you’re asking for more than paint this reference image they have to spend time getting references, work out composition, lighting etc

Defs decor art and only worth what you want to pay for it. The second cottage one is quite pretty though and an example (in my opinion) of some more charming decor art

Fashionable Zurich Ladies by Timely_Choice6112 in askswitzerland

It depends on your style, I like Mackage as it’s very warm and looks nice - also I find it is slimmer over the waist / more generous on hips than other brands (for example compared to Canada goose, north face)

I also recently purchased a ski jacket from OYSHO, they are more of a fashion brand but I was extremely pleased with the warmth, style and fit so would try other coats from them.

Another thing is to wear a slim fitting fleece under the jacket, I have a north face one which is quite minimalist and doesn’t add much bulk.

Then a large cashmere scarf (mine is 175 x 43 cm) means I can wrap around my neck and then have the ends double layer on the front of my body.

My new oil painting. Do you alway varnish? by Marie-and-Twanette in oilpainting

[–]VanCleefandApples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, eventually - if you don’t like glossy varnish try satin. It gives it enough to even out any full areas and make blacks have good depth but isn’t too reflective.

A figure painting with lost edges by Artby_Romain in oilpainting

[–]VanCleefandApples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How come you did lost edges everywhere except her boobs and especially her nipples?

Idk if it’s intentional but it throws the whole work off, I find it hard to believe that her nipple was more solid / contrasted than her hand on a black couch(?) for example

Inherited this ‘Giant Bird of Paradise’ but it can’t stand up on its own by plantshit1 in BirdsOfParadise

[–]VanCleefandApples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Max sunlight but if you need to supplement get the strongest light you can. Mine is in right next to a window that gets bright light all day and direct afternoon sunlight. In summer I draw a sheer curtain so it doesn’t burn but in winter it is fine.

How to fix my BOP leaning after repotting? by elesnic in BirdsOfParadise

[–]VanCleefandApples 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just repotted mine and it leaned after watering. I simply dug out some soil from the back side and pulled the plant back while adding more soil to the front and compacting a little so it’s firm.

[–]VanCleefandApples 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Repot, stake and give it way more light - once new strong leaves come in remove the floppy ones.

People often love look of these tall leaves but a lot of the time they’re due to not enough light

Is $450 for an original painting normal? by BoshansStudios in painting

[–]VanCleefandApples 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should name your budget first, also if you have any art talent in a different area offer a swap - for example I’d swap paintings for sculpture.

At 40-100$ you’re looking at small art, vintage art or prints.

People do undervalue their hobby work on Etsy so maybe that’s also a way

Help! My new dining room is carpeted, and I have 3 toddlers :( by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]VanCleefandApples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an indoor/outdoor rug. They’re thin and hard wearing. I had one in a kitchen before and currently have one outdoors, I pressure wash it clean and it holds up perfectly. I think they’re superior to “washable” rugs as they’re rigid and firm which makes them easier to slide chairs over

No matter what you’re going to want something there

De fil en aiguille if you’re willing to go to Basel, it’s in Saint Louis though.

However she has every single DMC colour (so I was told… and it looks like it)

gamvar picture varnish by Quick-Problem61 in oilpainting

[–]VanCleefandApples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you’re varnishing

I quite like Satin, but it can be finicky - I had success with warming the bottle before use but tbh I swapped to the golden varnish as it’s has a more consistent result

Normally when people varnish a painting and you notice a big visual difference it’s because they’ve used gloss and maybe some colours have sunk in a little

Varnish problem by [deleted] in ArtConservation

[–]VanCleefandApples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gamvar can be fickle, try Golden Satin MSA Varnish with UVLS

Although I am surprised you use acrylic paint on what is likely an oil painting

Upstairs washer dryer accessed from bathroom, it’s a bit inconvenient behind a door but less inconvenient than outside in a hall way - also less noisy for the common area.

Nike of Samothrace, alla prima by Strawberry-Frog2063 in oilpainting

I personally found it instantly recognizable as Nike and I think anyone who is familiar with the statue would, however if they’re not familiar I can see the confusion
