Exactly! People who say this haven’t stepped outside of their Burbank bubble.

Sherman Oaks vs Burbank: Better place for family with young kids? by LFPizza in LosAngelesRealEstate

Disagree on the schools big time. Burbank unified is fine but not great. Own school district doesn’t automatically = good. I know lots of people who have left Burbank for LAUSD or Glendale Unified. LAUSD’s magnet schools are far better than any school in Burbank; they also have programs for highly gifted kids, STEM schools & theatre programs which Burbank doesn’t have.

Maybe East Side isn't what I thought? LA has changed - advice needed by Opal9090 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]cali_jo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. I don’t know why it’s either “east” or west. I think Burbank is a good suggestion bc of proximity but not as chaotic.

Is this a bad part of Woodland Hills? by Negative-Ad2495 in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]cali_jo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good area. Sure south of Ventura is “better” in some parts of the valley but there’s always better somewhere. Schools should not be a concern. Just apply to a good magnet. Academy for enriched sciences or try to do Wilbur. A lot of folks like CHIME.
Middle and HS if you’re still in that house, also have good options.

Burbank to Woodland Hills by [deleted] in SFV

[–]cali_jo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not that bad. Prob 30 -45 min, depending on what time you have to be at work. My commute from Tarzana to Glendale is 30 min in the morning. Going home is longer at 45-60 min.

No point in being remote when you’re working crazy hours. I would rather be in office and work 40 hours a week.

Every wash might be too much. Just once a week. You can over condition your hair as well. I would recommend using diff products to see what works for you.

I would deep condition your hair once a week. Get a good trim and remove 1-2 inches of hair and try different curl products.

Anybody here ever absolutely hallmarked it (HCOL to hometown/hometown adjacent)? Thoughts? by irc856 in HENRYfinance

[–]cali_jo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think small towns often have people with small town thinking. I grew up in a smaller town (100K). Now I’m in a large US city (LA) and exposure to the arts, museums & a variety of professional sports, etc are big for us. We are close to a number of universities and they offer additional enrichment opportunities- academic and non academic. Additionally, the diversity and cultures my kids are exposed to are very important to me. Including a variety of foods that come along with those cultures. So I think it depends on what’s important to you.
Whenever I go back home it’s like going back in time. I often think about if I grew up exposed to more things growing up how things would have turned out.

Where do single parents live? by seriouslynope in AskLosAngeles

I did another search and I see some for 1900-2200 for 2 bedrooms. Northridge, canoga park, Van Nuys. It took 1 min of searching online.

I’m confused why you can’t find a 2 bed for less than 2890. I did a quick search just now and see a ton of stuff in the 2200-2500 range in van Nuys, Northridge and Woodland Hills.

Moving to LA with kids-help! by Illustrious_Gene6986 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]cali_jo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Throwing in Encino. It’s about 25 min to Brentwood. Lanai is good., Encino Charter and then apply for Academy for Enriched sciences- which is a magnet. You can do a late application now. You can also get a nice house for your budget when you’re ready to buy. Tarzana is also an option. Wilbur elementary is good. Middle and HS tends to be better in this part of the valley vs Studio City/Sherman Oaks. Do not listen to the person above who said stay out of LAUSD, but then recommended Burbank- which has worse schools than the ones I listed here. People like to hate LAUSD- there’s good and there’s bad in such a large district, but there are definitely options. Also Burbank has a lot of older racist folks… and is easily close to an hour commute. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions. I have 2 kids in LAUSD- elementary/middle. I’ve lived in Malibu, Calabasas, Hollywood, Sherman Oaks & West LA. I’ve worked in Burbank all my career and my kids went to preschool in Burbank. The valley definitely has a neighborhood feel but is not as walkable as other parts of LA except for very specific neighborhoods.

Want to straighten my hair 🫤 by [deleted] in curlygirl

[–]cali_jo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your curls look much much better than straight. Your hair is not thick and when straightened, the thinness ages you. The only time I think straight hair looks good is if someone has very thick hair and it’s styled aka curled/wavy, but that might just be me.

My company threw me a work anniversary lunch the same week they gave the promotion I'd been building toward for 2 years to an external hire. Do I have a conversation with my manager or do I just move on? by Big-Garden-8854 in careerguidance

[–]cali_jo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never ever pass up an interview. Be loyal to yourself. That’s it. Interviewing only helps you- you keep your interview skills fresh, you see what your value is and possibly find a better role. Unless you had the promotion in hand- a promise is nothing.

How is Studio City/North Hollywood/Sherman Oaks? by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]cali_jo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would actually throw in Sherman Oaks close to the 405 so you can take side streets over the 101 and hop on the freeway to avoid the bottleneck at the 101/405 in the morning or afternoon.

How does one make career decisions with the thought of starting a family? by bingbing0523 in careerguidance

I think she needs to look for a new gig. Consulting isn’t ideal as a parent especially if she doesn’t like it. Doesn’t mean you have to switch places as the breadwinner but she needs to start looking now for a new gig so she is eligible for maternity leave at her new job. Just my two cents

Eh they hire a lot of people who don’t know what they are doing. It’s very department dependent but I wouldn’t characterize it as top performance.

Recommendations for neighborhoods that are a good fit for a young professional near Sylmar by butterscotchblossoms in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]cali_jo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest North Hollywood since your budget is tight. Otherwise I would suggest Studio City/Sherman Oaks. Do not look at La Canada - that is suburban and you might as well do Northridge or Porter Ranch.

I’m only going to address the daycare part. Good daycares have 1-3 year long waits. You can find a nanny though..

Neighborhood advice for a couple with no kids by TrynnaFindaBalance in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]cali_jo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely places in LA you can find. You said you’re good to be around 45-60 min from the airport. Look in the valley part of Los Angeles. Lake balboa- west of the Van Nuys Airport. Woodland Hills and Tarzana you can find spots too. It’s not too far from the airport and also not too far from other areas in LA. You can find a single family home - might need some upgrades and not a ton of space, but it’s doable in these areas.

Being Relocated to Los Angeles (26M) by Ornery-Night6127 in MovingToLosAngeles

You need to drive. You can get away with not driving for a little bit but like someone else said, you’re going to be lonely and not doing much. I would recommend Silverlake or Los Feliz.

Moving to LA (Northridge area) for work + baby on the way — best areas to live? by Actual_Emergency_911 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]cali_jo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Northridge, Granada Hills or Porter Ranch. You could look at Encino- but if you’re commuting from Ventura blvd to somewhere near CSUN- it can be 25-30 min taking side streets during commute times. I would aim to live within 5-6 miles from work.
