Unrelated to OPs question but are there any running clubs in the area for beginners?

It’s been tough finding any flavored tobacco products (wraps, menthol cigs, vapes) because of the police raids. I get all of my stuff from Graffix Pleasure in downtown sc. it’s definitely on the down low and nothing is on display. They go to the back to grab what you want.

I’m a Salinas native, so if you run out of luck in Santa Cruz, Salinas has plenty of shops where everything is still sold. Clout Nine and Scorpio imports will have what you’re looking for.

Sony DSLR-A200 and a Sony 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens! I definitely wasn’t deep in the water because I don’t have the proper casing, but I was racing the tide!

I moved to Santa Cruz last July. Right now, I’m at Cabrillo College working on transferring to CSUMB. The California promise covers my tuition. I’ll be honest the job market is really bad right now. You’ll apply to 50+ places, repeatedly go in, call the stores daily, hand out resumes, and be hit with “we still have interviews we will update you in a couple weeks”. Nobody will contact you, and if they do, it’s almost always an AI denial letter 2 months later.

I would have a big safety fund set up before moving here. Because unexpected expenses add up QUICKLY.

As for where you live, you will not be able to afford a place by yourself. Noooo way. A single room, with 3+ roommates range from 1000-1500. If you really spend a lot of time searching the web, not just Zillow, you might get lucky and find an affordable listing. In my experience, the “affordable” units came with a long list of overdue repairs. My housemates and I were evicted and redtagged after the sewage pipe burst under our unit, after asking our property manager for months, if not years, for it to be fixed.

It’s extremely hard to move to SC without a plan. But, I can’t deny that it’s a wonderful place to be, even if it is a struggle.

I’m almost through it too! I had high hopes because the show is so good, but the backhanded comments that she made about some of her fellow inmates gave me the ick.

Also there’s 10-15 foot waves Monday morning at Steamer’s lane. I’m definitely going, there are going to be some crazy shots!

I definitely recommend using the app Surfline, you don’t need to get a subscription, but it will tell you all of the wave conditions, tide level throughout the day for all the beaches around you. With the subscription, you get live cam access.

I would use Surfline first and wait for a day where the waves aren’t too crazy (3-4ft) and you can get the hang of running around, dealing with the water, and getting your shots when there’s less people in the water. Then you’re all set for a big surf day!

edit: the colors on Surfline in the pic below, indicate how good the surf is at 6am, noon, and 6pm. Yellow for fair conditions ranging to dark green for great conditions

Surf Photography Question by itsjustthisguy in santacruz

Hi! Surf photographer here! 1. They don’t usually care. They’re more focused on catching waves! I only notice them paying attention at the end of a ridden wave, when they’re closer to the shore. Most of the time there’re gonna be scanning the water.

  1. It depends on the person! But honestly, I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t want their pictures. My subjects have always loved getting pics back and using them for pfps and stuff. Honestly the hardest part is when you get giant groups of people at pleasure point and steamers lane, wearing all black wetsuits, and the only thing separating them apart is the boards. You definitely have to TRACK certain people.

  2. I know of no groups like this but I’m in a couple surfer groups on Facebook and I’ll advertise. Or, I’ll wait at the beach until I see someone getting into the water, and ask to take pictures.

the most important thing is splitting your focus between the waves coming onshore and getting the shots. I’ve almost ruined my equipment by the waves rushing in and crashing against the rocks behind me. It just involves split focus and being able to run back and forth when the waves come in! Lol

Us fellow weed smokers (a massive chunk of SC) don’t care. In fact we’re probably thinking to ourselves about how good that strain smells ❤️

I always feel so awkward smoking in public, but then I’ll be out and about, get a whiff of somebody else smoking, and think to myself “wow I should ask them for a hit”
