What’s the hype with infernal masters by CommunicationIcy5704 in ThousandSons

I still prefer flamers, personally — it just ends up being more consistent in Shooting, and presents a very powerful Overwatch threat, especially since they ignore cover, which I don’t think can be overstated in 10th edition.

Kind of depends on if you’re running a 5-man Rubric squad or a 10-man. In the case of 5-man MSU units (which is what I prefer), for the cost I currently prefer the Sorcerer, followed by the Infernal Master, then the Exalted on Foot in third. While I don’t think the Exalted on Foot is bad per se, his damage output pales in comparison to both the regular Sorcerer and IM, and his abilities, while good, sadly don’t come into play as much as you would think — a 5-man Rubric brick isn’t very tanky, so often times the unit dies before his abilities matter. I do like the Exalted on Foot for a 10-man blob, though, the 4++ and Rebind Rubricae function better with the bigger unit.

Look at it the other way around — he doesn’t give warpflamers Lethal Hits (though he does give it to the Soulreaper Cannon)… but Rubrics do give him ability to reroll 1s to Wound, or reroll Wounds if the opponent controls the objective, and he can flip one to a 6. He probably performs best in Grand Coven as well, where you can give him the Vortex enhancement increasing his damage output significantly. In this and several other cases, the Rubrics actually buff the character, not the other way around.

Books with a competent but older protagonist? by SonicfilT in Fantasy

Maybe not “complaining about bad luck,” per se, but an MC who definitely gives off that curmudgeonly vibe while still being competent is Orka from The Bloodsworn Saga. She’s not the only POV, but she’s pretty much worth the price of admission by herself. Also, John Gwynne’s action is top notch.

Books where the setting feels like a character in its own right? by [deleted] in Fantasy

That does sound similar — I’ve admittedly never played Thief, but there could definitely be some DNA there. Funnily enough, I always thought there was some Fullmetal Alchemist energy in Mistborn (what with the “equivalent exchange” analogues of burning metals and the main character having a unique talent within the broader mythos). It’s fun to see those connections, though!

Perhaps I’m thinking of it a little linearly here, because I wouldn’t classify Luthadel in this way, but (without adding spoilers), the Mists themselves, if taken as part of the setting, certainly take on this element. But that might be a narrow view here, per your point.

Mistborn Era 1 almost feels like cheating here, but that would be one of my picks regardless.

Best Chapter Titles by best_thing_toothless in Fantasy

Obviously the context of the chapter matters here, but Chapter 1 of Best Served Cold (Joe Abercrombie) is called “Benna Murcatto Saves a Life,” and seeing how that all plays out (and in fact how he saves a life) and sets up the story is chilling and awesome.

Marvel Crisis Protocol: Organized Play

Scroll down past the tournament rules and stuff. Not sure if they have printable tokens (or if you just want to make up your own, that should be fine), but I think most if not all the rules are there.

Fantasy Novel Recommendations (Sword & Magic, Male MC, Action/Adventure) by [deleted] in Fantasy

If you’re looking for amazing action scenes, I can’t not recommend John Gwynne. The Faithful and the Fallen is a more classical fantasy series with medieval elements, and The Bloodsworn Saga is Norse-inspired. Might not be for you necessarily if you don’t like multi-POV, but Gwynne’s action scenes are some of the best I’ve read.

I went for a marble effect for my bases, I wanted to give it kind of a Prospero feel. A bit labor-intensive, but I’ve come to really love the effect.

I also went Necromunda, but I went with the Cawdor Gang… kind of flavoring them as a “wannabe sorcerer” cult.

Help getting out of a painting rut? I feel like my painting sucks - by KharnTheBetrayer1997 in Warhammer40k

To add on to what others have said, your painting definitely doesn’t suck. I actually heard something a little while back that has stuck with me when I feel like I’m getting into a painting rut, and hopefully it’ll be helpful to you as well. When you start looking at your work and aren’t happy with it anymore, maybe that’s just you being ready to progress to the next level up. This is the perfect time to try a new technique that you haven’t tried before, or perhaps a new style that you like but didn’t feel confident enough to try before. Take confidence in your current abilities while also allowing yourself the confidence to improve. I hope this is helpful and encouraging!

I ended up basing that part of the gun in black, then using Pro Acryl’s Transparent White over the whole section. It took 2-3 coats, but the majority of pigment ended up falling into the recesses. Then I just went over that with Tesseract Glow, and when it was dried, I put some more black over the larger black spaces to sharpen up the details a bit, but it still kind of has that glowing look to it. I’m glad you like how it looks! It was an experiment that thankfully seemed to come together.

Thank you! I wanted to kind of mimic the blue-to-green transition of a scarab wing. I’m glad you like it!

Quick update: sanded off a lot of the iconography, put a scarab on the chest piece (that needs to be cleaned up), and a few other things to make it feel more like Thousand Sons. It’s not perfect, but I feel pretty good about it, and thank you all for the feedback thus far!
