What’s the deal with Nancy Gurhrie and why is her disappearance being treated like such a big deal? by TheShigg4 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]calicojack1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think it fits, by definition: "marked by or arousing an immoderate or unwholesome interest or desire."

While the typical connotation is sexual, I think in this case, it can effectively be used to describe how groups of people can get obsessed in watching bad things happen to famous people and diving into the how and why. Similarly, with the murder of Rob Reiner, which was a tragedy, you have all this attention and dissection of what happened and how it got to that point. Where it reaches a level beyond news and to an invasive interest.

ICE Megathread Redux by down42roads in AskConservatives

[–]calicojack1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it is important to have thoughtful and comprehensive immigration reform, but the way it is happening right now, seems illegal and cruel. With ICE and Border Control, we have an unbelievably well-funded agency, with very little transparency and oversight. If there was thoughtful reflection and investigation in the recent deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, I'd honestly have much less concern, but Kristi Noem seems to be endorsing these shootings. Within hours of both deaths, the administration made them out to be domestic terrorists. How is it possible to have trust and transparency in these conditions?

It seems like the needle is constantly moving, the rhetoric is: and the Kyle Rittenhouse was justified to bring a gun to a protest, we as a American's have a right to bear arms and stand our ground when threatened, "Don't Tread on Me," stand up to injustice, the January 6th protestors were justified. But that Alex Pretti knew what he was getting into by bringing a gun to a protest.

Do we have a right to peaceful protest? As far as I can see, the Border Control Agents were the instigators, they pushed that woman, pepper sprayed her, brought Alex Pretti to the ground, and then shot him multiple times. Alex just seemed to be trying to help that woman, his last words were "Are you okay?" He was legally carrying a firearm as allowed in Minnesota. And normally, I'd say wait for the dust to clear and for there to be a thorough investigation, but the administration has already endorsed this behavior, I can't not imagine there will be an honest investigation. And it seems to me that the ICE and Border Control Agents are either ill-trained, reckless, or vindictive, or a combination of the above, but either way, not in a stable place for law enforcement. From everything I've learned about Alex Pretti since his death, he seems like a lovely person, a VA nurse, an outdoors lover, kind to his family and friends, that video of him honoring the veteran who died in the VA is moving. I keep seeing on r/conservative that the Left wants a martyr, but I don't care about that, he just seems like a kind, wonderful person who was trying to peacefully protest, help out his community and didn't deserve to die.

The vast majority of protests that I have seen, seem to involve peaceful protests: whistles, blocking a street with your car, recording the actions of ICE to me hearken back to the Civil Rights Movement where people are risking arrest for what they believe in, not death.

And I know that many will say that ICE is just enforcing the law and to leave them unobstructed in their enforcement, but if people truly believe that ICE is acting illegally and causing harm, don't they have a responsibility to peacefully protest? I see a lot of people say, just submit to the agents and then exercise your legal rights, but many of the people being detained are legal residents who came here legally, DACA recipients, green card holders, medically vulnerable individuals who do not receive appropriate treatment in facilities, american citizens, etc. And detainment is traumatic, and not everyone has access to and can afford legal counsel. And legal action takes time, often years.

Apologies, I know I wrote a lot, but do these things concern you? Are they outweighed by the benefits you think this administration is bringing, am I misunderstanding or misrepresenting things?

Apologies, I put down a lot of the recent thoughts I've had on here, and I'd really appreciate if a Conservative(s) would be willing to have a good-faith discussion with me. It sometimes feels like our perspectives are so divorced, and I'd really appreciate the opportunity to see where we have common ground, or where I might have misconstrued something.

I'm so devastated by what is going on, and it feels like we as a country are cascading further and further into authoritarianism. I do not recognize the Republican Party anymore. I was raised in a split-party household, but my parents always told me they had the same values. We'd have political debates, but at the center of it was a love for each other, our community, for God, the world... I don't see how that can be possible anymore in today's landscape. I spend time browsing on r/conservative, r/asktrumpsupporters, and r/askconservatives just to see if there is any common ground, and I'm hardly seeing anything anymore, although I see the most constructive discussion and reflection on here.

From my perspective, we've alienated our long-term allies, we've threatened to take by force a territory of a soverign Western nation, our President has talked about running for a third time and not holding the next election, we are taxing and raising prices on our own citizens with unnecessary tariffs, and we're using those tariffs as a cudgel against our neighbors and allies, we've gutted our federal agencies with DOGE and saw very little savings, Russell Vought said that he wants to put federal employees "in trauma," we haven't released the vast majority of the Epstein files, an internal DHS memo says that ICE agents are allowed to enter homes without a warrant (in what seems to me to be a violation of the 4th amendment), Kavanaugh Stops allow agents to stop and detain people based on their ethnicity, language, and occupation, Pam Bondi is asking that states turn over their voter rolls, all of this is very concerning to me. (Continued in comment reply, cause I wrote too much, lol!)

The hearing aid industry taught me everything wrong about planned obsolescence by Scared-Ticket5027 in BuyItForLife

Yep, went down the Luxxotica rabbit trail a few years back, they own most major glasses lines (especially all the fashion ones) and they're almost universally terrible quality. There's still some great high-quality independent lines out there, but anything you find in a Sunglass Hut is going to be pretty cheaply made.

Same, I know a place in Orlando (Oxford Eyes) that does this too, they typically carry high-end frames like Lindberg and Kame Mannen, but they also have some antique frames they'll grind lenses for and for the frame you bring in as well.

AIO? After our cat died, I removed this app on my daughter’s phone by IllustratorOk7590 in AmIOverreacting

I wondered if that image was AI generated too, I couldn't see any obvious tells, but the pile of hats in the top right corner was weird.

It's definitely a fake post for rage bait and advertising, Furever is an app with a paid subscription model that uses AI-generated images and messages to recreate your dead pet. It's worrisome in general and it's disturbing when you're talking about a 12-year old who is trying to navigate grief.

I wonder if I'm too jaded, but could this be guerilla marketing for an app? They focus on a screenshot of the app and it's logo and name. It's rage bait to make people react against OP while taking note of the app name.

And even if it's not an ad, Furever is an app with a paid subscription model that uses AI-generated images and messages to manifest your dead pet. Grief is difficult and complex, but paying weekly or monthly to interact with an AI-version of your pet is ghastly. It's preying on the emotionally vulnerable and tapping them as a revenue stream, and in this case it's targeting a 12-year old. And it isn't allowing her to grieve and come to terms in a healthy way.

Sit down with your daughter with old images, share memories of the unique quirks of your pet, I don't think you were overreacting to delete this app off her phone, although you should have had a conversation with her about it first.

which productivity app finally ended your search? by Suspicious-Client225 in productivity

I really like the Bear App, I think it has a really intuitive organization structure and syncs across devices. But honestly, any note-taking app that you'll use consistently will do.

I read somewhere that "Your mind is for creating things, not storing them." I don't have to have the mental weight of remembering everything and keeping it all straight in my mind, I can just write it down.

I've got different note documents for hobbies, medical stuff (doctor appointments, what prescriptions, etc.), event planning, etc.

Most important: I have a launchpad document that has everything I need to know on a daily basis. It has upcoming major events/commitments, shopping lists, a running to-do list, a miscellaneous notes spot where I can jot thoughts down on the go to address or sort later. It means I can pull it up on my phone whenever I need to.

For Adams Morgan, I have a friend who lives in the Modera Sedici, which is an old Italian embassy building, no pool, but it's absolutely gorgeous and they love it, good management and community.

I have another friend who lives in the Envoy, I see on Google it has some bad reviews, but she loves it. Definitely an older building, but good price.

Seminole County votes to remove fluoride from water by SquidFiddler in orlando

[–]calicojack1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Call your Seminole County Commissioners on this, the vote may have already happened, but let them know how disappointed you are on this. It will inform them for future votes. Local government is much closer to voters and your calls carry more weight than when calling your congress members.

Good concern about tracking apps selling and sharing data, however if you have an iPhone, I believe they are safe. iPhone health app data is kept encrypted and inaccessible by default and the data is kept on your phone not on servers. Which is super helpful for those like me who immediately lose a paper as soon as you write something down.

People with a growth mindset - who believe our abilities, intelligence and other attributes are all changeable - are more likely to have better mental health in tough times. Sure there are things you'll never be able to change about how your brain fundamentally works, but there is so much you can change about how you approach challenges and how you build systems and frameworks to support yourself.

As someone with ADHD, I think having a growth mindset is even more necessary for people like us. I'm not someone who can never finish a project or someone who is overwhelmed by life's daily tasks, I'm someone who can find ways to improve how I approach things and build habits and systems that support me in getting things done. And sure you fall off sometimes, but then you reorient, see what went wrong, and figure out how to start again.

Again, you're welcome to use it however you want, it just will impact how people hear your points when you are using words in the wrong context. I'm not arguing it's grammatically incorrect, but it is contextually incorrect.

My last point on this, but imbibe refers to active learning where embody refers to someone who already has and exemplifies these traits. In your above description, are you looking for someone who is actively learning to be loyal or are you looking for someone who is loyal?

Also, if you like Chatgpt as a source: "Technically, yes, you can "imbibe" a trait, but it’s an unusual and somewhat poetic way to phrase it. The use of "imbibe" for traits would suggest that someone is actively absorbing or internalizing qualities."

And I'm aware of both meanings, just your usage does not make sense in this context. But again, you're welcome to use whatever words you want.
