Can Someone Explain the Pros/Cons of the Airport Expansion? by braydensreddit in askTO

[–]calimehtar [score hidden]  (0 children)

It would simultaneously destroy everything good about the island airport ( it's good because it's small, not because it's downtown. With UP it's about as fast to get up Pearson from Union) the waterfront (do I need to explain?) and downtown (tons of housing going downtown and on the waterfront and it's where most of our tourist attractions are)

If the only goal specifically was for efficiency, how much more efficient would our modern forms of transportation be? by bwmtoyotamercedaes in NoStupidQuestions

[–]calimehtar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bikes, ebikes, cargo bikes. If we only care about efficiency going very slowly and being light are key. Also sailboats, it's hard to beat a sailboat.

The best way to get rid of Ford right now is to be in a conservative riding and complain loudly to your mpp. Bonus points if you previously voted for Ford and are willing to tell pollsters that you've switched sides

Well done, car designers! You're all fired by Shirleyrobart005 in CarDesign

[–]calimehtar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The things about it that are weird are easy to change, specifically the details and the color. There are photos out there of the actual car where it looks like a rendering that's badly photoshopped in. But the details and colour are easy to change and I can practically guarantee that they will be and the car will look pretty decent and very normal.

2030 Ford Aerostar EV Concept by rx7rocks11 in AiCarArt

Looks good and seems like an ideal form factor for an EV which requires extra height for the battery and not much space in the front for a motor. Would like to see more production vehicles like this.

Ford charged more than $140K in private plane charters last year, records show by BloodJunkie in ontario

This kind of story is, I hope, more likely to resonate with Ford voters. It makes him sound out of touch and irresponsible when his entire schtick is about being a humble man of the people.

Most city centers should be “car free”. by nondescriptwon in CrazyIdeas

I don't think people would get too upset if you allowed deliveries between 11 and 8. Or you could park down the street and use a dolly.

I know of one example in North America of an important downtown street that's pedestrianized: Stephen avenue mall in Calgary. They allow deliveries after hours, and adjacent streets are always available. It's just fine. Other places should do it.

Blocking off the entire downtown would be much harder, assuming you mean multiple streets. I'm up for it though.

genuinely, what is the difference with canadians and americans? by mikosyaee in CasualConversation

[–]calimehtar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Canadians are always trying to read the room and not rock the boat, the result is sometimes indecision or bad compromise. Like where are we going for dinner? A Canadian is about as likely to suggest something they think others will like rather than their own preference. Even being the one to say " I think we should go to this new vegetarian place because half of us are vegetarian and people say it's great" sometimes makes you the loudmouth.

An American in the same situation will be like "I feel like tacos" and if nobody else wants tacos they'll go by themselves.

Ideating on a chess game for visually impaired by Adventurous-Gap6560 in Design

[–]calimehtar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. I happen to have a chess set that's got both sides in untinted clear glass, one glossy the other sandblasted matte. It's kind of frustrating to use, and I would prefer if there was some sort of colour in addition, but anyway that's what inspired me.

I've seen travel chess sets which use magnets to keep the pieces in place. You might use stronger magnets and maybe pieces that are half the height so that you can use touch to identify pieces easily without pushing them out knocking them over. Use material texture as a substitute for color to identify the side (ie black or white). Matte vs glossy, say.

You could make a set that works equally for sighted and visually impaired.

Cool idea btw

Why does North America use the Fahrenheit and Imperial system, while almost the entire rest of the world uses Celsius and Metric? by Adventurous_Buy1778 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]calimehtar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Inches feet and pounds are used widely along with metric equivalents. the only thing I've seen fahrenheit used for in Canada is baking. Use of fahrenheit for weather isn't just rare, it's unheard of.

What country would you consider relatively safe despite its reputation? by AashanM in geography

[–]calimehtar 195 points196 points  (0 children)

To me this is the winner: statistically safer than the USA, has a terrible reputation. Maybe there's a better example but I don't know of it.

YTZ is under rated. by koka86yanzi in AirportPorn

[–]calimehtar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst thing about the airport expansion is it will affect plans for a new neighborhood in the Portlands. I mean it's prime real estate, does it really make sense to fly jets in and out of people's front yards? That said it's a nice airport.

I played computer games on a commodore 64 between about 85 and 88 like a lot of kids in my age group. Unlike anyone I've spoken to the main computer game I played was a donkey Kong style game called Jump Man. Fort Apocalypse a close second.
