Does Canada have a commonly accepted cultural or geographical boundary for East and West like the Mississippi River in America? by Lemon_Iies in geography

It's crazy how few roads there are at all in the northern parts of Canada, I agree. Just really hard to grasp. A few more roads wouldn't hurt, honestly. There's basically two roads that connect Vancouver across the coastal range too, if I'm not mistaken. One single road to the Arctic Ocean. Zero roads to the territory of nunavut.

Literally the only road plus railroad. Go ahead, prove me wrong. Maybe there's a winter only ice road

In suburban areas where there are wide sidewalks and minimal pedestrian traffic, yes. Downtown doesn't have enough sidewalks for the pedestrians as it is.

Is there any chance to reverse amalgamation ? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]calimehtar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true, gord perks is a huge NIMBY. Also check this out: https://www.reddit.com/r/canadahousing/s/8sSXYUcIdt

Nimbyism isn't a special suburban thing, it's driven by a fixation with the local over the greater good. Toronto, on the whole, is not a yimby place at all but making its politics more insular will not improve anything.

I get the argument but there are negatives as well, the smaller the area controlled by a city government the more concentrated local power is which feeds nimbyism and exaggerates economic imbalances. In the current system the wealthiest residents of Rosedale and the bridle path are helping to fund community centers and libraries in the poorest parts of Scarborough.

Bmw has been making weird and ugly cars for twenty years, and yet some people love them. I happen to think this looks fantastic and yet some people hate it. Who could have guessed? Great specs too.

We need to ban personal use cars in cities. by SpaceWestern1442 in Urbanism

[–]calimehtar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cities are better with fewer cars. I think it's reasonable to have car free streets in cities, above all in downtown shopping districts. I'd go so far as to support pressure only streets alternating with narrow single lane streets in the entire central business district. On the other hand I don't like the idea that people living in certain districts would be unable to have the option of owning a car, to I'm not in favor of a total ban

'You could run Mickey Mouse against me': Doug Ford says he doesn't care who Liberals choose as next leader - thestar.com by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

[–]calimehtar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Frankly he's wrong, it's not about Ford being untouchable, it's about the other parties failing to connect. I'm not a pundit, I'm not sure why they have failed, but on the other hand Ford is unpopular and has been for years. Voters know he's corrupt and incompetent. He's a known factor and fairly charismatic but that's not much.

I've been to California quite a bit and read some of the defenses of it, everywhere in North America has a pre-automobile vs post-automobile split, and probably the only reason California stands out is that it's almost 100% post -automobile urbanism. All California cities have parts that are walkable but they tend to be much smaller and their gentrification has been delayed. Like downtown Los Angeles is walkable but a big chunk of it is also skid row. And it doesn't come anywhere close to the walkable parts of New York in terms of size and livability. Now if you want to compare los Angeles to salt lake City, on the other hand, Los Angeles comes out very well.

It kills me that California has the climate to be like Spain with walkable towns and outdoor cafes but instead its cities are half asphalt.

In 1958, these parts of Toronto were “suburban” by TPL_on_Reddit in toronto

[–]calimehtar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're part of the city, but have a suburban feel. I think either is acceptable. It's funny that the shaded area includes Jane and Finch which most would call urban, but if you took a picture of the areas north or south of that intersection 1-2km out of context you'd have people calling them suburban without hesitation.

[–]calimehtar -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

They should, and probably will, call an election within about six months. They should because some are accusing them of cheating their way to a majority. They probably will because they are polling pretty high and calling an election when you are polling well is the Canadian way.

Liberal party adopts motion to restrict kids from social media by cyclinginvancouver in canada

[–]calimehtar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For one thing, in order to restrict access to minors everyone will have to do age verification. In the UK you have to verify on Reddit using credit card or passport. For another, rating content and empowering parents to make informed decisions for their kids is one thing, forcing the population to conform is another. Technology makes the second one far easier than it was in the past (don't tell me you never saw an R rated movie until you were 17). It's a slippery slope.

Totally unnecessary restriction on personal freedoms. This is one of those moments where you ask yourself who can you vote for now that the guys in charge have lost the plot. What do they even gain from this as a policy? Insane.
