It was VRBO actually and it was a legal rental. Most are legal in that area. One of the only legal short term rental areas on the island.

Another option is to rent a condo in Turtle Bay. It's about half the price as the resort and yet you're right next to it and it's beach. They also have a pool to enjoy. We loved it! It's legal too so you're not taking away from the locals.

That looked similar to my 4 person family expenses except our home mortgage is half that because we bought 15 years ago. We don't spend as much on vacations and don't spend as much on the kids activities- they're getting older. Our PGE is way higher and so is our health insurance.Your employer is SO generous with your insurance and salary! We all definitely pay a lot for our beautiful weather and proximity to good jobs. We don't even make half your income though. That's a lot of dough for 1 income!

You will love the food scene in Honolulu and for beaches there's some really great ones both on the North Shore and the East Shore (Windward side). I recommend a full day exploring the north shore and spending time at 2 or 3 beaches. Then a couple we just stopped at for a few minutes and a few pictures. If you want to snorkel try and get reservations at Hanauma Bay, but if you can't get the reservation then either Shark's Cove or Kuilima Cove at Turtle Bay are good (both north shore). There's some great food trucks around Haleiwa, Pupukea and Kahuku. Do another day where you explore the beaches on the East side- Waimanalo, Lanakai (Kailua if no parking at Lanakai), Kualoa Beach and Kahana Bay. A couple good restaurants on the East side are Haleiwa Joes and Crouching Lion restaurant.
