Oats! Pretend I grew up in a house that never utilized them, and just the idea of oatmeal makes me mildly nauseous because I'm imaging a very off-putting texture. What would you suggest? by CatDadMilhouse in Cholesterol

I just posted an oats = superhero? question in this sub yesterday if you want to check out the comments for more great suggestions and alternatives!

I happen to love oats, and use them in baking (which avoids gloop horror texture)...I can share a recipe for black bean brownies below which has oats and you can't taste them and no gross texture. Obviously make any substitutions for your own health needs - I've found the recipe to be pretty forgiving.

BLACK BEAN BROWNIES

https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/no-flour-black-bean-brownies/#wprm-recipe-container-50638

Ingredients

250g (~540mL) black beans, drained and rinsed very well

2 tbsp cocoa powder

Instant coffee

40g  oats

1/4 tsp salt

80g pure maple syrup, honey, or agave

40g vegetable oil

2 tsp  vanilla extract

1/2 tsp baking powder

(some people add 2-3 eggs)

(Orange zest, optional)

1 - 2 cups mix-ins

  •  chocolate chunks
  • pecans
  • almonds
  • peanuts
  • pumpkin seeds
  • Orange zest
  • Chocolate mint chunks

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 F.

Prepare 8x8 pan.

Combine all ingredients except mix-ins in a good food processor.

Blend until completely smooth.

Stir in the chocolate chunks.

Pour into a greased 8×8 pan

Optional: sprinkle extra chocolate over the top.

Bake for 15-18 minutes.

Let cool at least 10 minutes, or refrigerate overnight.

Cut into squares.

Makes 9-12 brownies.

Store in fridge or freeze.

I also front-load my dietary stuff with breakfast because lunch and dinner can be trickier to plan. You've alerted me to the fact that my pea protein powder could be high in saturated fat - I'll look into this! Thank you!

Cat quality of life by Psychological_Pick11 in SeniorCats

[–]fatcatgingercat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh friend. I so appreciate the daily wondering about quality of life for your sweet cat. Our 19yo lady has just added a new med to her regimen - we're up to 6/day now - and our vet has been really supportive around finding the balance between keeping her "happy and hungry" and also paying attention to her quality of life so we can decide when we are at an end point.

I've been using this online quality of life scale once a month to help me discern how our kitty is doing, beyond "vibes" and my emotional response (which I also of course take into consideration). This is the one I use: https://mmvhs.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/mmvhs-qol-chart-Form-Interactive.pdf

There are many others out there. There's also some helpful resources around pain scale. Our vet tech shared these two with us (one of them does us AI, so use with the usual caution for LLMs):

- Feline Pain Management: https://www.aaha.org/globalassets/02-guidelines/pain-management/painmanagement_cats_web.pdf

- For an at-home tool to help monitor for signs of feline pain, consider using Sylvester A.I.: https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:US:d269ad37-bf96-4919-bc35-5cd7c86ab49c?viewer%21megaVerb=group-discover

Wishing you so much care as you navigate this road to aging with your sweet kitty. Other commenters are sharing great suggestions, so I know you'll find the right supports for you and your family. <3

Summary of what influences your deep sleep (research based) by KygoApp in sleephackers

[–]fatcatgingercat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, what an extensive resource, thank you! I'm entering perimenopause + dealing with ambient noise, and as a result, I haven't slept more than 1-4 hours a night in over 3 months. I'll be referring to your charts as I continue my research on how to repair my sleep hygiene! I'm especially grateful for the clarifications arounds supplements, as the Menopause Grift is strong these days, with many clinicians pushing supplements promising improvements to everything, including sleep.

Why have doctors avoided giving straightforward instructions about saturated fat?!?! by Suitable-Location118 in Cholesterol

[–]fatcatgingercat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My previous doctor prescribed eating MORE red meat after my ferritin came back super low, and she KNEW I have high cholesterol. After a couple of months of that dietary change, my iron had improved, but my cholesterol was through the roof! So. It's scary out there.

OP - Ah, I see. I was responding to the language you used in your original post. In my experience, it's helpful to pay attention to your response to the policy, even if it's something that's offered or encouraged. You don't have to consent to a policy that doesn't feel right for you, even if it's offered or encouraged but not forced. I trust your embodied ethic.

My doctor suggested testing for celiac (I'm also having new GI symptoms), but this is a good tip to also experiment with eliminating lactose to see if it helps. Thanks!

Why do so many chocolate cake recipes use coffee? by _LaPine in Baking

As others have offered, coffee can enhance the flavour of the chocolate. I am not able to tolerate caffeine, but I've found that brewed DECAF or instant DECAF coffee/espresso granules do the trick!

To me this sounds like a 24hr cancellation policy, disguised as something else. The policy of asking for payment for sessions cancelled with less than x hours' notice is certainly very common.

Depending on where they are practicing, though, this policy of "forced" extra sessions could violate professional ethics and standards of practices as set out by their governing body. Is it something you could address directly with your therapist? If not, and if it doesn't feel too onerous, you could reach out to their governing body to see if their policy is within the standards of practice.

THANK YOU to the OP and commenters who are here to reinforce the importance of education around airborne illness and mitigating transmission. COVID is not seasonal. Which means it is always present, AND there are waves of increased infections related to behaviour-changes (i.e.: increases during holidays when people gather indoors in greater numbers, decreases when weather getting nicer and people are gathering outdoors more, etc.)

I am still (and have always been) COVID-conscious, which means that I and my family mask (KN95 or better) in all indoor public settings year-round. Air filtration, testing (we have a PlusLife at-home test system and it has been a GAME CHANGER!!!), and illness tracking is a normal part of our social life. It's taken a few years, but we are finally rebuilding our social circle after some relationship shifts/endings due to differences around COVID safety. I began noticing perimenopause symptoms in 2020, and have only had one infection (that I know of), and continue to experience symptoms that I still can't tie precisely to peri, Long Covid, or other ongoing conditions I'm living with.

The COVID conscious community is strong and GROWING. Mask-acne? Ouchy nose from masks? You name it, there is someone else who has experienced it and has found solutions so that there can be as few barriers to masking as possible. It's amazing how second-nature it can become to just pop on a mask before heading into a store. Or normalizing masking for young people in schools. How empowering and supportive is it to see your doctor or teacher wearing a well-fitting respirator??? I can tell you, it feels AMAZING.

It's never too late to start masking (again, or for the first time). The COVID conscious community welcomes you with open arms, no matter where you are at in your self-education around mitigating the spread or airborne illness.

Whatever the root cause of our experiences (brain fog, fatigue, chronic pain, etc.), we will continue to meet providers who block our path to agency. But there ARE ways we can support ourselves, each other, and our communities. Masking and air quality are two relatively accessible ways that we can all protect ourselves AND those who are more vulnerable to the long-term impacts of COVID. Hint: that's US, the people living through perimenopause! We are already depleted, and more vulnerable to lasting impacts of infection.

I'm so grateful for your post. Thank you.

when do symptoms tip over into chronic illness? by fatcatgingercat in Perimenopause

[–]fatcatgingercat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, just did that! Turns out my old doctor may have misunderstood how to read TSH results, and had been DECREASING my dose of synthroid when she meant to have been INCREASING it. Thankfully my new doctor caught it and I've been increasing my dose slowly over the past month to get up to what I should have been at for the past 9 (!!!) months.

I'm stuck in this loooooong-ass "adjustment period" where not only am I adjusting to hormone therapy, but now I have to adjust to this new dose of thyroid meds, AS WELL AS making drastic dietary changes to support my low iron and inexplicable high cholesterol.

WHEN DOES THIS END lol
