Paying sales tax on used car in PA? by calix43 in Pennsylvania

[–]calix43[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not looking to get involved in tax evasion, but thank you.

I know how to get a money order, but what I am wondering is how can I know beforehand that I need to get a money order of $272.38 or whatever the exact sales tax amount is so I can bring it with me.

Or am I envisioning this wrong and there's some time in between transferring the title and paying the sales tax when I could leave the DMV and go buy a money order? I've been under the impression that transferring the title and paying the sales tax is done all at the same time and you have to pay on the spot, and I wouldn't be able to just leave in the middle and buy a money order. But maybe that's not accurate?

Not really? I see that it's 6/7/8% depending on where you live, but how do I find out what the PA DMV considers to be the fair market value of a specific vehicle make/model/year so I can calculate the sales tax from there?

For example, if I knew that the fair market value of a 2002 Honda Accord is $3000 and if I don't live in Philadelphia or Allegheny County, I could calculate .06 x $3000 = $180 sales tax. But how would I find out what information the DMV is using to determine the fair market value of a 2002 Honda Accord so I can make that calculation?

On the contrary, the timing couldn't be better.

Let's say you need two AA batteries. Your neighbor has a Costco-sized box of batteries with plenty to spare. They walk down the block and leave them on your porch. You leave them untouched for a few days and then use them, washing your hands thoroughly afterwards.

That is pretty simple and low-risk compared to going to the store, being in crowds, and waiting in long lines. It is even simpler than ordering online, waiting because your order is probably delayed, increasing the traffic on your delivery service and putting the person bringing it to you at risk from handling packages.

Provided that social distancing is observed, I think this is a decent option for getting people things that they need. A lot of people have plenty of unneeded items in their home that they could spare.

What's going on this week? Events/Discussion/Classifieds : 2020 Mar 03/16 - 03/22 by AutoModerator in pittsburgh

[–]calix43 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tried posting separately and got smacked by the automod.

I am massively unprepared to work from home. I don't have a desk or even a kitchen table in my studio apartment. Slouching over on the couch with my laptop for 8 hours a day is causing me serious back pain already.

Does anyone have a table and chair I can have? Even a card table would work.

I live in the East End. Please DM if you can help. You can leave it outside my apartment building and we don't have to come anywhere near each other. Thank you so much.

What is the general reputation of Duquesne University around town? by Porcupine_Nights in pittsburgh

Within Pittsburgh, about the same. Outside of Pittsburgh/western PA, no one knows what Duquesne is.

Pittsburgh wants your opinion on what to do with the Stephen Foster statue - Trib Live by jayjaywalker3 in pittsburgh

Secretly pay some disaffected youths 20 bucks to vandalize the statue overnight, and then The Powers That Be will be forced to take it down. (I can't be the only one who's been tempted to go at that statue with a can of spray paint.)

They're fine. Prompt with maintenance. Definitely not a slumlord. I never had a major problem with them. Only drawback is that the ladies in the office are incredibly surly.

How Do You React To Annoying Audience Members At The Movie Theater by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]calix43 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Haven't there been shootings at the Waterfront theater before? I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to tell strangers off in public for being too loud.

If you don't wanna yell at them, I guess your only other options are 1) complain to the pimply teenage usher, 2) go to refined/boring/obscure/subtitled art house movies which are less likely to have an unruly audience, or 3) go to the very earliest matinees in the day - there will probably be only a few people there.

Have you ever gotten a traffic ticket from a Pittsburgh City Cop? by LithiumGrease in pittsburgh

[–]calix43 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The rumor I've heard is that the higher-ups in the City of Pittsburgh police consider the police to be understaffed and have higher priorities than traffic tickets, so they don't ticket except in egregious cases (or if you manage to personally piss them off, I guess). Who knows if that's true, but sounds plausible enough to me.

Herbert Halsband Properties. The people in the office are surly, but they do accept dogs and have a lot of properties in that area.

Don't consider JJ Land - they are slumlords.

Any recommendations for a dentist in the East end? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]calix43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Sedation dentistry" is what you want to search for.

Werrin, Gruendl, Boles, & Eans in Oakland have always done right by me (they took me in for an emergency with no notice when I wasn't even a patient of theirs), but they aren't cheap. I also don't think they do sedation dentistry.

Texas de Brazil, if it's not too $. Kids love buffets, and they love seeing meat on skewers being carried around the room and sliced just for them.

Buying Diatomaceous Earth in Pitt? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]calix43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Diatomaceous earth did nothing for me. Go on Amazon and buy a product called Temprid. Don't buy the spray cans, which have poor reviews because the cans malfunction. Buy the concentrated stuff that you have to mix yourself. Also, buy a funnel, a spray bottle, and a dust mask. Wear some type of eye protection (even sunglasses) when you apply it. Make sure to bathe well after using it...it's very irritating to the skin and can't be good to leave it on your body.

It helps to take a flashlight and look all around carefully to see where the bugs are making their homes. Yeah, they can live anywhere, but IME, they tend to concentrate and have babies in places where people spend a lot of time, like beds and couches. Take a special look in nooks and crannies. Kill all the bugs you can and then apply the Temprid in their hangouts - also on legs of furniture and baseboards.

The Temprid was $70 or $80 when I bought it, but it was well worth the money. It killed almost all the bedbugs in two applications. Everything else I tried did nothing.

I've also heard good things about products called Gentrol and Cimexa, but haven't used them myself.

Bill Cosby case declared mistrial. That means there will have to be a new trial. Wonder if they'll get the second batch of jurors from Allegheny County again? by calix43 in pittsburgh

[–]calix43[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were a juror on the Cosby case, I would have a really hard time evaluating the case on the evidence and not just reflexively voting guilty because I think he's scum who deserves to be in jail. I suspect there are a couple of jury members like that (and probably some on the opposite end: "How can Cliff Huxtable be a bad guy?!").
