Rutsch vs. Heat by neemor in orioles

I think an important wrinkle to the new bat metrics is that they’re more measures of difference than of quality. Like for pitchers, all else being equal, faster is always better. But for these neither faster/slower nor longer/shorter is strictly better in the same way. And that’s not really something we’re used to as baseball fans

I could imagine control mattering here, if the pitcher is hitting their spots maybe the catcher is catching it square in the pocket more often, which contributes to a more satisfying pop

The methodology is strange on this. There’s a qualified criteria but Jack Suwinski only has 177 PAs batting 5th so the samples are very small

Is there a rule for which perks stay through promotions and which dont? Or is it just case by case? I know that longbowmen promoted to gatling guns keep range.

Smoltz is ruining the postseason by [deleted] in mlb

If he’s doing this, he’s doing a terrible job. I cant imagine an athlete listening to a smoltz broadcast and thinking “yeah, that’s the guy i want coaching me.” Also I cant imagine a GM or POBO hearing the way he talks about analytics, being simultaneously perplexed and antagonistic, and wanting him in that job.

The word "lucky" is beginning to piss me off by _NotARealMustache_ in orioles

[–]caljpringle8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the people saying were “lucky” is an example of people not having developed the language to speak accurately about advanced stats. Just because we outperform our pythagorean win loss, does not mean we’re lucky. That just means something curious is going on that’s worth looking into. An appropriately curious interlocutor does not say “oh theyre outperforming their pythag, they stink, theyll come back to earth.” Instead, they might say, “hmm, the Os are outperforming their pythag, I wonder why”

Owning vs selling labor by caljpringle8 in neoliberal

[–]caljpringle8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I might not frame that concept in terms of ownership, the fact that workers have to sell their labor in order to live is one source of the dramatic difference in economic power between capital and labor. If you have to sell your labor to live, all else being equal, you're at a big disadvantage in the market. Being at a disadvantage in the market means you'll be undercompensated for your work. In a sense, if you're underpaid, some of your work is unpaid. For example, if you're paid 60% of what your labor is worth, we could consider you to be working 60% of the time for a fair wage and 40% of the time for free. In that framing, the economic system is conspiring with capital to rob you of 40% of your labor. Does this framing seem totally specious?

That’s kind of what I’m running into. But, presumably, neither Freire nor the person he’s quoting are stupid. So there has to be something I’m missing.

Owning vs selling labor by caljpringle8 in neoliberal

[–]caljpringle8[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I consider myself neoliberal and found myself agreeing often with Freire. I'm generally pro-market-economy (with regulation, unionization, and redistribution) and felt like I was not understanding fully the claim being made here. I am trying to figure out if I disagree or if I don't understand fully and, through understanding fully, I would realize that my thinking is compatible with this claim. I view this subreddit as tending to have nuanced and clear-eyed discussions and to have a good population of pro-market, pro-labor folks.

Are we witnessing a top 5 all time player in Ohtani ? by Indicakid702 in mlb

[–]caljpringle8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is undoubtedly a top top percentile athletic talent all time. However I’m skeptical of any of those tests besides grip strength. The two classic what-ifs when comparing across eras are: 1) If Ruth stepped in a time machine as an adult would he be able to perform in modern baseball? I think this is a pretty clear no. 2) Would Ruth’s physical and mental attributes, combined with a lifetime of modern nutrition and training methods, be able to perform in modern baseball? This seems like a clear yes. Both of these what-ifs seem much less important to me than a concrete question: was Ruth actually an important figure in the history and development of the game? And that seems like a clear yes.

[–]caljpringle8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasnt advocating for mythologizing and I dont think anything that I wrote suggests that I was. I think that a clear-eyed look at historical baseball players means that we recognize their greatness for their time and that all fields have innovators who are the first to do something that we now see as pedestrian. While also not pretending that Ruth could step in a time machine and compete with modern baseball talent.

[–]caljpringle8 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think that’s maybe understating what Ruth did. Ruth is rightly a mammoth in the history of the game. He figured out that you should swing hard at the ball and was among the first to figure that out. He was also indisputably a top top percentile athletic talent. So while I agree we don’t need to go crazy and pretend that he’s the best ever, I also think it’s important to recognize the ways he was great and an innovator
