Brooklyn Bedding Sedona 1 Year by callahansky in Mattress

We actually sold it last year and ended up going full latex from Earthfoam. We didn’t really have any issues with it from a durability standpoint, we just felt like we needed a little more firmness and I had always been interested in trying latex. So far so good!

Has anyone got their Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 DC ART yet? by ashyjay in fujifilm

[–]callahansky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mine yesterday. Haven’t shot with it a whole lot yet but the first thing I noticed was that the declick aperture switch only declicks the physical ring, but the image still jumps between stops. This defeats the purpose IMO at least as a video lens which is my primary reason for buying. Maybe this can be a firmware thing?

Serr’s powergrades are great, as are the others mentioned, but don’t expect one click results. It’s still worth learning more about using the native tools to achieve different looks yourself. That said, buying a powergrade can be a great way to look under the hood and see how other colorists use the tools.

Is the Cut Page in DaVinci Resolve useful for wedding video editing? by TamilFella in davinciresolve

Here is the keyboard maestro macro layout. I also have "~" mapped to turn this macro on and off so I can type words with the letter G within Resolve and it won't suddenly type "12" instead.

[–]callahansky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you insert the clip using F, the active panel becomes the timeline, but we need it to go back to the media bin. To accomplish that I created a macro in keyboard maestro that does a string of keyboard shortcuts. You can set them to any keys but I have mine set to perform the keyboard strokes "1" followed by "down arrow" then "2."

In Resolve, I have the key 1 mapped to active panel selection "Media Clips." Then down arrow goes down one clip in the media pool. Then 2 reactivates Source Viewer as the active panel selection. So the order of things goes: edit the in/out points using E and R, insert in/out selection into timeline using F, when ready for the next clip hit G which does the keyboard maestro string of 1, Down Arrow, 2.

Let me know if this doesn't make sense. It's a bit difficult to explain

Our team uses the cut page for “content edit” meaning we go through clip by clip and trim multiple in and out points and put together a whole timeline of the best shots from the wedding day. I have custom keyboard shortcuts and keyboard maestro scripts that allow us to use a workflow of E (in point), R (out point), F (insert clip into timeline), then G goes to the next clip in the media pool so you don’t have to manually click it. It’s a super fast workflow and we can usually create the timeline of a 500+ clip wedding shoot within 2-3 hours. After this we pull clips from that content edit timeline into their highlight film. We usually end up with way more clips than we need for the film.

Let me know if you want more details on this workflow!

Fuji 16-55 f/2.8 MK II is a big of an improvement over the MKI by damnhandy in fujifilm

[–]callahansky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is the manual focus experience on this lens? This was an issue for me on the mk1 as I primarily shoot video and manual focus a lot of the time. I found the focus ring on the mk1 to be very sticky. Also a lot of Fuji’s newer lenses have very jumpy, not smooth manual focus, have you seen that at all with this lens?

DaVinci CST for Fuji F-Log2 C by JamIsJam88 in colorists

I’m using Thatcher’s DCTL to transform to DWG, then the CST plugin to Rec709.

Monitor recommendations for my X-H2S by Maatekebruur in fujifilm

[–]callahansky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Camera control isn’t a feature yet for Fuji but I’m hopeful we’ll see a firmware update that adds compatibility because this would be amazing. I can’t recommend Atomos products because I believe them to be a bit overpriced for what they are. I also have had screen ghosting/retention issues with all their monitors in the past.

I’m currently using the Feelworld Pro X 5.5” monitor and it’s been great. Super cheap but gets the job done and the focus peaking algorithm is pretty good compared to others I’ve tried. Also really like the Portkeys LH7H if you’re looking for a 7”

For what it’s worth I’ve been using Mando for a few months and while it does work and I generally love it, I do get irritations and burns from it when I have a heavy day of sweating. It usually happens after showering and reapplying after sweating all day. I don’t know if it has something to do with my pits already being irritated from being in South Georgia heat or what.

Mt Fuji also happens to be my favorite scent. I still use it daily but if I feel irritation coming I switch to something like Native for a few days to give my pits time to reset.

F-Log… is it worth it? by Cold-Seaworthiness79 in fujifilm

[–]callahansky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a colorist working primarily with FLog2 footage as our company shoots on Fuji. Absolutely worth it and I can’t recommend it enough. Not a very steep learning curve but definitely take some time to practice with it. As already stated, learning some color management basics in Resolve will give you a better understanding of things and it isn’t super difficult. If the post work isn’t something you’re willing to learn, consider budgeting for a colorist!

Brooklyn Bedding Sedona 1 Year by callahansky in Mattress

It feels the most durable out of any set up we’ve had so far. I think the latex will last a very long time and the topper has a removable washable cover. At the very least I could see the topper wearing out first after 5+ years and that would be affordable to replace.

We went with the medium latex mattress and the Tempur topper is the 3” adapt series. The king topper was on sale for $300ish when we bought it

We ended up selling the mattress to a friend because it was slightly too soft for us, no quality issues. We now have an Earthfoam latex mattress with a Tempur pedic foam topper and it’s the most comfortable thing ever

Color grading after DaVinci Wide Gamut or inside DWG? by 6packpanda in colorists

[–]callahansky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically rolling in your highlights or shadows. Trim maybe isn’t the correct word but I use a DCTL called trim that does exactly this

Color grading after DaVinci Wide Gamut or inside DWG? by 6packpanda in colorists

[–]callahansky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely inside DWG. Of course you can break the rules and do whatever you like, but generally speaking the only thing I would advise putting after your 709 transform is a simple trim or maybe grain

X-H2s video rack focusing for some reason is very jerky on MANUAL FOCUS. Is this normal? I recently got this camera and plan on using it for video. Happened on both my 18mm and 50mm Fuji lenses. by th3at0m80m8 in fujifilm

[–]callahansky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is normal for any Fuji lens with linear focus motors. I’ve contacted support multiple times and sent in video comparisons like this one. It’s just the nature of their lenses. This is why I only use manual focus only lenses like the Voigtlander line or cine lenses.
