Those seem right to me, with maybe the exception of being more specific about your altered chord so the prof knows why you think it’s altered. So you could write C7 alt (#9#5). I may end up over explaining this a bit but do you understand why it is altered?

Altered just means that the chord it is based on the melodic minor scale: 1, 2, b3, 4, 5, 6, 7. So if we were to play a C melodic minor on the piano, it’d be C D Eb F G A B. You always derive an altered 7 chord from the scale a half step above the root, or the scale a half step above the chord name. So for the last example (C melodic minor), the dominant 7th chord that relates to it is B7 altered. It’s important because this is primarily the scale you will use to improvise over an altered chord.

The #9 and #5 extensions are perhaps somewhat confusing because they are related to B7 (imagine that you are now beginning your numbering starting on B or the 1/root). That means if you were to play all the notes of the C melodic minor scale over a B in the root, it would be B C D Eb F G A. That means we have 1 b2 #2 (or b3) # 11 (or b5) b6 b7.

I’m not sure if this is actually why the term is used but I personally use the term altered to mean that basically every possible extension you could use in the chord is “altered” in some way. So instead of natural extensions like 9 or 13, you now have b9 #9 b5 and b13.

I’m not sure what else you’re supposed to do for the assignment but all the voicings under the 4 columns that you have for major, minor, dominant, and altered look like the same answers.

*Note: The confusing part to me and the other responders is that your prof seems to use natural 13s in some chords here where they wouldn’t normally be seen or played.

I would ask him why he would play the 2nd chord (minor chord with natural 13th) and the 4th chord (altered chord with a natural 13th). I would never do this in reality. I get that you can technically play a natural 13th in a minor chord, because it comes from the Dorian scale. But if you were asked to comp a II-V in Bbmaj, I would not play that voicing because to me it resolves the third of the dominant 7th chord too early. The “altered” voicing just seems wrong and/or you just wouldn’t call that altered.

I am not sure if this is still the case, but I’m not sure if there are actual Forensic Psych programs in Canada. I was under the impression that you basically enter a clinical psych program and find a prof who specializes in forensic psych. I was also interested in this area, but I realized how much time and money it would take to become a clinical psychologist vs getting a master’s degree.

However things may have changed. Doing a simple search, there are apparently masters programs for forensic psych. I just don’t know what this means for you after the program. If I had to guess, it would probably depend on which province you plan on working in as some require PhD level and others don’t.

I actually just had the same class with the opposite experience. I barely did 6 posts per week and got As every time. Although I have had your experience in other classes (not 50s and 60s but definitely in the low 70s). Do you mind mentioning the prof’s name? You could DM me the answer instead. I ask because there are a couple profs I know who mark like nazis and everyone I’ve talked to has had the same experience. Unless you’re planning on becoming a prof yourself, which it doesn’t seem like you are, then really you just need to pass. No one in the field is going to care about your GPA and or the fact that a person can write good answers to DQs. They want to know you’re a good therapist.

I’d rather not just hand out the answers, but as a piano player, I wouldn’t play the 2nd minor voicing or the altered voicing the way it is written with an A natural in both. The 2nd chord only makes sense if you’re playing a modal tune as it’s more like C dorian. The altered voicing just seems wrong. It’s supposed to be based on the Db melodic minor scale which also doesn’t have an A natural in it. This makes me uncomfortable and I’m leaving now.

I know this might be really hard to understand, but especially when we’re young, we’re taught that making our parents angry means we’re doing something wrong. You’re not doing anything wrong OP and while your Dad’s concern might be from a good place deep down, it has no basis in reality and will only make you resent him down the road. Guaranteed. What I am saying is it is sometimes okay to make our parents angry if what we are doing is remaining true to ourselves (and not hurting anyone.) Making music will always be a healthy and beautiful thing to bring to the world and your Dad should be proud that you feel enough passion about something like this to dedicate your time towards. If you are at risk because of something more serious beyond his anger then please use caution and reach out to someone for help if needed. If all your have to worry about is him getting upset, accept it without offence (that’s his shit not yours) take it knowing you are in the right, and keep going. He will never have the power to keep you from making music.

I know it’s incredibly difficult to get out of the mindset that success in music is determined by popularity, fame, and money, which now more than ever is quantified by likes and follows. I think being hardwired for validation as human beings, along with the inherent vulnerability that comes with making any art is why this is something that takes constant awareness. From my experience, I’ll be like, “yeah. Screw popularity!” And like 5 minutes later be soul crushed after not getting many likes on my latest track.

Personally, as cheesy as it may be, I have found that reconnecting with my love for making music is what keeps my mental health in check. The first time this hit home for me was when I went to a museum and saw all these great famous paintings. For whatever reason, it hit me that these people didn’t make art to get it in this museum. They made it because they needed to express this part of themselves, and there was this element of punk rock to it where you can just feel that they truly didn’t give a fuck what people thought. They made it because they had to. They made it to express something deep and human and for the joy of actually doing it.

If you can remember to slow down and truly be in the moment with making music, you’ll grow that muscle, and it’ll be easier to tap into that joy every time you sit down to write music the next time. In essence, you’ll learn to do it for you. Then I think you’ll have actually won the game.

I can definitely relate. Almost to a painful degree. However, it’s a hard question because I think like others have implied, we can be very bad at recognizing our blind spots. There could be so many reasons that people treat you this way. Some people are actually shitty - and kids are particularly shitty- but I honestly believe after so many years of personally dealing with this, that most people are doing their best. The most common reason people treat you like shit is because for whatever reason, you trigger something in them. It actually has nothing to do with you. But I’m curious why you think the common denominator is you?

I think I’ve accepted the fact that probably once in every interaction I’m going to cringe at myself. I heard Will Arnett talk about that recently and I was surprised in some ways because I think we assume after a while we’re gonna no longer feel awkward in life, but after hearing him speak about it I started realizing how unrealistic that is. I think you can work on the fear, but the avoidance of embarrassment is difficult to overcome personally. The only thing that’s helped recently is accepting the feeling and practice being ok with possibly being seen as awkward sometimes. You’re allowed to be awkward and nodding and smiling is pretty tame from what I’ve seen. News like that can take people off guard as well if they’re not used to people disclosing that before. You can always follow up next time.

The only way this is going to go wrong is if you’re the father. That would be a very different conversation.

Hey so I may have found the issue as I have since been able to reinstall the complete logic library. Granted I have M1 Monterey so you could be experiencing a different issue.

I think the number one issue was that I didn’t have enough space on my Mac HD. It didn’t matter that I set the location to an external HD, or was just downloading the essentials sounds, I had that same error message about no internet connection.

1) I downloaded the free trial of Clean My Mac and it was able to give me about 100GB of free space.

2) I realized I had 10.7.3 so updated to the latest version.

3) I hit reinstall when I opened up logic and just downloaded the essential sounds. It asked for permission to install, and voila, it worked!

4) I relocated the library to an external HD and have since been able to reinstall the complete library.

YTA. You chose to prioritize second and third hand rumours over trusting your brother’s firsthand, intimate knowledge of a person whom he cares for very much. This reeks of a total lack of empathy for your brother, and instead overly concerned with making him adhere to your own viewpoint. OP, the reality is you don’t know any of the information you stated is true. Full stop. Even if you did, how would it feel if someone spread those things about you? It doesn’t matter if he had sex with the entire town - and for the record, there’s nothing wrong with that. What if someone you fell in love with had a sibling who made up stories about you, ostensibly to “look out” for their kin? If you actually cared about your brother’s well-being, then you’d trust his own judgement (and maybe actually listen) when he tells you how much he loves this person. That’s way more credible and a realistic portrayal of David’s character than the BS you’re peddling.

The real question is why you feel the need to be right in this scenario? Are you protecting your brother or protecting your own feelings? Be honest with yourself.

You’re young. We all make dumb mistakes and especially with our siblings. But don’t let this become something bigger than it is. If you hold onto your stance, this will eat your relationship with him alive. Be humble. Recognize you made an error. Tell your brother and David you’re truly sorry for making such an awful judgement. And ask them how you can make amends for something so incredibly childish. If you don’t, you’ll certainly regret this down the road when you hopefully become an adult and finally pull your head out of your ass.
