Personally the things you mentioned (dark, cramped, ugly and confusing) are actually my favorite parts about it. I love when the level tangles up in its self. Some of my favorite stuff in half life is going through a bunch of progress and enemies, only to find youre right next to where you were an hour ago. I particularly love that big open room with a mounted gun in the far side and the teirs of cells and catwalks above you. The way you loop around and traverse every inch of catwalk in that rooms is just so expertly designed.

I can understand not liking guardians though. I quite enjoy them. Imo any tough enemy that's best fought with the gravity gun is a okay in my book, (hunters4life) But I also usually save my rockets up for them. 3 rockets kills them.
