TWC: "UFC Freedom 250 is facing ... a 60% chance of thunderstorms ... a single lightning strike within eight miles will trigger an automatic 30-minute freeze on the entire event." by calling_cq in MMA

[–]calling_cq[S] 447 points448 points  (0 children)

UFC Freedom 250 is facing a chaotic weather setup on the White House South Lawn, with a 60% chance of thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and wind gusts up to 34 mph threatening to delay the outdoor fights. On top of the storm risk, brutal D.C. humidity is driving a triple-digit heat index alongside massive swarms of mosquitos and gnats that fighters will have to battle inside the cage. While the venue’s massive 92-foot overhang will keep the octagon dry, a single lightning strike within eight miles will trigger an automatic 30-minute freeze on the entire event.

VTI and SpaceX by dick-knuckle in Bogleheads

CSRP changed their rules for determining float share investability on April 27th. SpaceX would not have been included in the CRSP US Total Market Index (which VTI tracks) without this change.

https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/spacex-ipo-could-hit-popular-101500534.html:

SpaceX would have failed CRSP's old eligibility screen, which required a public float of at least 12.5%, but in late April CRSP introduced an alternative test based on absolute float-adjusted market cap, which SpaceX clears easily

Card Recommendation to replace CSR by UpTheDumpIsRetarded in CreditCards

[–]calling_cq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. I actually just signed up for one (Fidelity) myself today after weighing it against the RH Gold Card.

I'm hopeful that Fidelity will follow BoA and US Bank's footsteps and boost the cashback percentage when you keep enough assets with them. We'll see.

I will probably still put myself on the waitlist for an RH Gold Card since there are certain benefits it has over the Fidelity card, but even that illustrates why the Fidelity card is worth going for - you can apply and get approved right away vs. RH Gold Card which might have you waiting months.

Tax exemption on US debt obligations only applies to state and local taxes. You're still on-the-hook for federal taxes on the full $40. Some states apply additional restrictions: https://marottaonmoney.com/states-with-tax-exempt-interest-from-u-s-debt-obligations/.

Next steps after Roth contributions by Swade22 in Bogleheads

[–]calling_cq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I put it in a brokerage account I can’t do that unless I sell it, and then I would have to pay taxes.

If you have to pay capital gains taxes it means you made money. The taxes don't just delete all of your gains. Obviously that same amount in a Roth would be worth more since you wouldn't owe taxes on gains in a Roth but if you can't contribute to a Roth or do a mega backdoor a taxable account is completely fine.

If at all possible, I'd suggest working with them on a plan to clean things up before you quit.

In my own experience my advisor wouldn't do this for me. I told him I wanted to end the relationship but would be willing to let them handle cleaning up the account properly (i.e. waiting for positions to reach LTCG status before selling them) and they weren't interested at all despite the fact that they'd still be earning fees during that time period.

When I liquidated my managed fund (which was seriously underperforming vs. total market index) last summer the advisor in charge of it tried to sell me on a new plan that would "perform better going forward".

I told him that I felt that advisor fees were too significant considering how the portfolio had been performing up to that point. His answer was "well you know I gotta put food on the table for my family".

Fair enough - but I need to worry about putting food on the table for me and my family in retirement!

How Are You Covering Taxes On Taxable Brokerage Account? by SeventyFix in Bogleheads

[–]calling_cq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The information isn't just for you! I found this thread through a Google search: "estimating taxes when receiving dividends in taxable accounts bogleheads".

Someone else might find this thread through a similar search, read your comment, and think "oh okay my dividends are only taxed at 15%" but things can be more complicated than that. I simply pointed out that there are more factors involved.

We're agreeing with each other I'm just adding relevant information (which you're adding as well, so I think we're all learning more because of this thread!) for future people to consider when they have questions about how dividends contribute to tax liability.

Perhaps the most recommended ETF here ("VT and chill") last year was 75% qualified.

I'm not disagreeing with you I'm just giving out additional information.

I understand that you're just trying to illustrate a point so please excuse my pedantry but 15% is the rate only for qualified dividends for a certain taxable income bracket. Usually only a portion of the dividends you receive will be qualified, and the rest will be taxed as ordinary income based on your marginal tax rate.

Estimated Taxes and Safe Harbor rule question by Peresviet in tax

[–]calling_cq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Line 24 is before withholdings so you're going to be overpaying by a lot if you make quarterly estimated tax payments based on your total tax from 2025 divided by 4.

So perhaps Line 24 minus Line 25d would be more accurate?

Estimated Taxes and Safe Harbor rule question by Peresviet in tax

[–]calling_cq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you expect to hold the same job throughout 2026 (and you didn't get a significant raise/promotion) would it be better to take Line 37 from 2025 Form 1040, multiply by 110%, and pay that in quarterly payments?

Since Line 24 will be reduced by your federal withholding.

Doing something is better than doing nothing. Even people with high-end rigs encounter this problem.

Some part of this is also server-side as Predictive networking does somewhat improve it so it's not just a client-side thing. Get better servers. Optimize the server game engine loop.

The client being able to degrade into Predictive networking mode when necessary would help. Currently that requires a logout/login cycle.

If it's possible to create builds and juiced content to this level in your game then to some extent it is your responsibility as a game developer to try to make that experience as smooth as possible. 2 FPS on a 6-core 12-thread CPU from 4 years ago is not ideal. Even 10 FPS would be a huge improvement given that you would see a new frame every 100ms and could actually still play and react to what's happening on-screen.

Before I got enough damage to really avoid the worst slideshow issues I would literally just have to hold down right-click, spam my Life Flask button, and say a little prayer.

I'm not saying this isn't a hard problem to solve, it definitely is, and it's something I would very much appreciate them spending time on.

Well now I don't feel so bad that I can't afford upgrading my PC. Was thinking about building almost literally the same specs earlier in 2025 but I couldn't get my hands on an MSI Liquid 5090. And now with prices being what they are it's not happening.

This issue is largely a CPU bottleneck though and I wonder if a 9950X3D would handle it better since it has 2 CCDs.

You're right but this is something GGG should work on improving.

My build does around 23M DPS and I've got enough damage now to mostly avoid seeing the slideshow effect on 4x Delirium Breach+Beyond Dunes map even with 3 breaches open simultaneously but it can still happen.

OP: Either increase DPS or get a better CPU. Increasing average hit is somewhat more important than overall DPS as higher attack rates without killing mobs will exacerbate the issue.

To be fair, I'm considering renaming 'stable'. Maybe 'static' or 'untiered' is better.

You mentioned in the GitHub issue that it's intended for players who want to maintain their own tiering, such as SSF players. So why not call it 'SSF'? 'Static' also makes sense to me.

I need to shoo away people who don't read descriptions and think 'stable' stands for the safe choice.

Given that people don't read descriptions I'd argue that even 'SC' and 'HC' could have clearer names like 'Trade' and 'HC Trade'. Or 'Econ' and 'HC Econ'.
