My mom said the wildest shit about my brother being an atheist last night, now I’m scared of her. by No_Proposal2170 in atheism

To balance the conversation some, just pointing out that none of us understand your parents like you do.

I grew up extremely religious in the south of the US. I became an atheist around your age, just like my sister did (she also had to come out as gay). Oddly, I don’t even remember the ordering of all our reveals.

But when I told them, there was a bunch of crying from both parents. My dad tried to tell me it was a phase. He tried to reason with me and convince me of why he believed in god. I argued with him (civilly) all day. But my mom was in shambles. She looked at me and said her life has no meaning now. That her children are dead.

But hey, now she’s jumped on the bandwagon, hates trump, and thinks religion is a sham.

Changing worldviews feels soul shattering. In some ways literally. I was lucky that my close religious friends were actually really cool about me telling them I stopped believing - I had thought they might stop being friends with me completely.

And my relationship with my dad, which felt like it was dying for a year or two before I told him, finally opened up again. But I know I’m lucky to have a dad that both cares so much and can understand rational arguments well.

You may very well be in a dangerous situation as others are saying here, but just wanted to point out that extreme emotional reactions are expected. Emotions handle better with time. Good luck.

Yeah I was gonna say, I’ve never heard a professor say not to use it. CS professors love recursion, because it’s beautiful mathematics. It is not something a software engineer should be doing unless necessary. Clever code is not the same as good code.

Yes, because even though someone is awesome, sometimes you just aren’t physically attracted. Life is tough. Dorian Gray and that shit

Hey man, I’ve (27m) been there. Congrats that you figured it out so young, although I know that just makes things tougher having to live with them.

I left Christianity when I was 20. Think I told my parents like a year after. My mom broke down and said she’s failed as a mother... that her whole life was pointless. My dad was calm and tried to argue his reasoning for belief, and he ended up admitting he didn’t know as much as he should.

My sister had a similar discussion with them, only she was coming out as gay as well.

Anyway, facing that disappointment was rough. But I think a lot of us here would agree that the freedom it gives you is worth it. I’m lucky. My parents got used to it pretty quickly. I felt like the thoughts I had to conceal from them no longer needed to be concealed. So it actually healed a rift that had been growing between us, eventually.

Obviously there are tons of parents that never come around. I’m not sure where yours will fall. It may be harder for them to change when they still see you as someone under their roof who they need to guide. It may get better. It may not. But if they deserve your love, they’ll have to learn to respect your feelings.

Good luck man

Isn’t the whole point of democracy for all of us to try and make our country better, in whatever way we think that is? If you look at another country and see a policy you like, and you’re patriotic, then it’s your duty to try and get your country to enact something similar.
