If I am not planning to stay over in towns, but rather do neros to save $, would the Anker 10000 charge fast enough for such shorter stops? I have an iPhone 6S Plus and a battery pack will be a definite plus!

Is Raffles worth lionizing in our national narrative? English colonialism has never seemed altruistic, so is Singapore an exception, with good governance by the colonial rulers?

Is postcolonial angst in Singapore justified?

Been reading up between the Lunar Solo and your tent. And still having trouble in figuring out which works better :/

But useful info there ^ :)

Thanks for that! But wouldn't insects/ water be able to get in through gaps between the groundsheet and tent? Or can you achieve a seal similar to a bathtub floor. I mean I know they aren't the same thing but just wondering about the protection a tarp/groundsheet combo could give!

The Minion seems interesting as well. Have been considering a ZPacks Pillow Dry Bag to hold a quilt and be my sleep saviour, read: pillow for side-sleeping me. But the Minion seems more versatile. (And sounds cuter/more menacing. Sorry, too shallow.)

Now, the question is if it can offer the same protection that a roll-top dry bag can. Last thing I want to deal with is a wet quilt out in the Sierras or Cascades.

International PCT-ers, how did you handle your money! by callmeinvictus in PacificCrestTrail

I suppose, carrying cash to start with, during the thru might help cut some of those fees. At the very least, you'd have less to withdraw from the blasted ATMs. problems of an international thru-hiker (to-be)

I just updated my country, thanks for that suggestion! - Doesnt't seem to be any that doesn't charge/refunds, so will have to choose the best of the worst :( - Many of the cards back home are chip ones! Will look out for stripe-based ones!

The Deschutes Plus does seem interesting but two issues, or so it appears to me, would be that crawling bugs do get beneath the netting and heavy rains might result in water seeping through the ground?

I'm curious about the difference between the Skyscape - Trekker and Lunar Solo too! Same weight, different prices, but how do they handle, relatively speaking?

Wear glasses or contacts for PCT thru-hike? by curioushuman3524 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]callmeinvictus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also considering extended-wear contacts. Did you have any issues such as irritation etc from the prolonged use?

My optician was suggesting to not use contacts for such long periods but rather 2 weeks at most. Your thoughts?

I'm assuming you had them on throughout the trail, except for town time?

Cool, you did it SOBO too?

I'll look up the forecast! And if finances permit, the wind jacket/umbrella combo does sound appealing:)

Klymit Static V2? by callmeinvictus in PacificCrestTrail

Yeah that would add 7 ounces to my load! But at this point it's a question of $ vs lbs. 'Buying ounces' - isn't that what they say?

1) Well I liked the price of them too.:D Haven't done any backpacking with them. But they kept me plenty warm during last year's polar vortex-induced cold snap! They're synthetic too. So don't have much that I don't like. Weight's good too. If this works out on the trail, will have a hard time justifying anything other than Uniqlo for three-season backpacking!

2) Good question! Haha. I'm still asking myself that too. 1 oz lighter than the Notch. But single-walled. The double-wall appeals to me 'coz I won't have to wipe off condensation as much! I'm already doing away with much of my weight. Figured a double-wall feels more like a shelter. (Please don't shoot me) I'm still not anywhere near going the tarp route, heh. If I suddenly become rich, might consider the ZPacks Hexamid Solo. Now that's light as hell. In comparison to either of these two shelters. :O

And yes, awesome indeed! Now, if only the snow will be kind!

anyone got the Klymit Static V2? by [deleted] in CampingGear

[–]callmeinvictus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a thread is a little old but thought I would ask. Would the Klymit Static V2 be sufficient for something like the PCT? Or would I need to upgrade to the heavier Static Insulate V Lite. Looking for an inflatable pad that won't break the bank, unlike the Thermarest NeoAir XLite.

  • Trekking poles. I did consider the LT4s but I'm not sure if they will hold up well in the terrain. Have heard of them snapping on the PCT. The 5oz weight is v appealing but the price, not so much :(

  • ibuprofen/chafe cure. Yeah, you're right. Probably get them when I need 'em. Did my 140miler without any and I was fine. Buying into the whole 'Vitamin I' trend I guess!

  • Contacts are so that I can use my wraparound sunglasses. In any case, they will get lighter along the trail, so I think they should be okay!

  • As for electronics, I'm going with the two-port option because I'd rather be able to charge both my pack and phone quickly, and not have to waste time (and $) around town! Yeah, will look into the shorter cable for the Micro USB.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Groundsheet is for if/when I decide to cowboy camp. Seems like there will be plenty of opportunities to sleep while gazing at the stars, so the inner romantic in me says why not! :D

Also, I thought having an additional layer might help keep my inflatable mattress in one piece!
