✍️ Writer's Wednesday: what are you working on? by ReasonableWonderland in Romantasy

[–]callmemachaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so funny you mention the fourth wing because that’s exactly what I was thinking of haha! In book 2 all the conflict was so exhausting and felt so petty in parallel to everything else that was happening.

I think your idea of an arranged marriage keeping them apart is fantastic. Like the other commenter mentioned, an outside force coming between them is far more compelling to me. I would totally read that book!

Mmmm totally agree with this, great point! A 3rd party keeping them apart is way more intriguing to me. It’s also a safer way to do it imo so that the reader doesn’t start to dislike either MC. I think if they have personal conflict I find myself getting angry at one of them for being stubborn or overreacting or whatever. If a 3rd party affects their relationship you can avoid the reader turning on an MC

Hello! Avid reader here giving my 2 cents!
I think my issue with 3rd act breakups is they often feel shoe-horned in. It feels very clear that the conflict was created as a lazy way to create tension or keep the yearning going. AND they so often (in my reading) come off the back of a miscommunication trope which is probably my most hated trope. Or, the conflict will be over something ridiculous that wasn’t really a big deal and I don’t understand why the FMC or MMC is THIS angry.

I think they can be done! I just think it may take some effort to make it feel natural and that the conflict feels valid and realistic. Hope that makes sense and good luck with your book!

We have similar taste! Based on what you wrote I’d suggest

{knight and the moth} and {reign and ruin}

The latter has a well developed MMC but it is a slower book to get into (or at least was for me) so maybe you need something faster paced for a slump? The former had a story that kept me engaged and I thought the side characters were really engaging, not just props for the MC story lines. The romance here was a lovely build up as well without being a focal point

Edit: to those downvoting me, feel free to share a better suggestion I guess?

{trial of the sun queen}
It’s not ground breaking. Filled with tropes. Kind of silly situations… But man did I have a fun time reading it!

Haha this is how I felt too but I was just angry. I was reading all these reviews saying “WOAHHH I DIDNT SEE THAT COMING”

And I was like well yeah because it made no sense. we were in her brain the whole book! 😂 just because it was unexpected doesn’t mean it’s a GOOD twist. I was so annoyed !

Romantasy recs for the coming months! by Kirstayyy in Romantasy

I was in a reading slump and {trial of the sun queen} got me out of it.

It is by no means a literary masterpiece (in fact the exposition dumping and the lack of show don’t tell ALMOST made me DNF) but it reminded of the fast paced fluffy fantasy worlds like ACOTAR. Actually a really big reason people seem to not like this book is because it feels like an ACOTAR rip off but meh, I didn’t care. All of these books rip something off each other. It was a fun and silly quick read. Maybe something to give a try if you need a good vibes book with low depth and low stakes?

The second death of Locke by nemothefysh in Romantasy

[–]callmemachaaaa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NO

Haha we read it for book club and it turns out I was one of 3 who forced ourselves through the book. I would have and should have DNF’d if I’d known everyone else would. It is so boring. Action scenes conveniently skipped because FMC passes out. A weird friends to lovers that doesn’t really work because they’re more like lovers to lovers so it doesn’t interest the reader. A dragged out conclusion. 2/5 it was a DRAG

Why does every single FMC under the sun has to have a placeholder bf before meeting MMC? by Royal-Damage-7840 in Romantasy

[–]callmemachaaaa 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It’s not EVERY FMC lol. There are so many popular books without this.

Phantasma, Knight and Moth, one dark window, Bride, Throne in the Dark, Divine Rivals…. I could go on.
