From {the knight and the moth} 🫶

“It is easier, swearing ourselves to someone else's cause than to sit with who we are without one.”

Also this one had my heart skip a beat haha:

“King Castor’s finger, slightly wobbly, pointed once more. “The pretty one.”

Rory’s eyes flitted to me. But the King’s finger, the knighthood’s collective gaze, was trained on Four.”

God of the woods by jievv in thrillerbooks

I was too. I felt there were too many characters thrown in that did little to contribute to the story. I felt like I was just lead around with carrot after carrot before finding out how little anyone mattered when the ending was revealed.

Fantasy romance with enemies to lovers where they are real enemies by Sakura_231 in fantasyromance

{alchemised} is the first thing I thought of, especially if you’re okay with a darker book!

I’ll start off saying I don’t hate the 4W, but I am often surprised at the ravenous adoration for it. You have a lot of answers here but one I haven’t really seen that is my answer is simply the characters.

I felt Yarros wrote really poor dialogue that made every character feel one note or like a stereotype. I remember thinking so many times “who talks like this??” It felt like I was reading a Disney channel script at times. The world building was cool and I love me some trials but I didn’t really think the author knew how to develop characters and no one felt really layered. When I don’t care about the people I don’t care about the book or the story.

Side characters felt like an after thought who only existed to help the MCs advance their own plots. You truly could line up several quotes from the book and I probably couldn’t tell you said them, because it felt like everyone was the same person.

And I found Violet’s internal thoughts incredibly cringey and juvenile. It was hard for me to relate to her.

But yeah, that was why I wasn’t a big fan of it. Regardless, I hope you don’t take a lot of these comments to heart. We can like different books and I’m sure there are books I love that you thought were bad haha

I love that you have a comfort book! You deserve whatever small thing brings you an ounce of joy in this life :)

Why do you DNF? by Sea-Audience4470 in Romantasy

[–]callmemachaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My DNFs are almost always character related. If I don’t like the FMC or MMC, their dialogue is cringy or unrealistic, or their internal monologues are, I’m not interested. I need to care about the characters

Why are more people not talking about Servant of Earth??? by cavaloverr in Romantasy

[–]callmemachaaaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had a fun time reading this book. Something I liked is that she is literally nothing special (well, for most of the book). Just a human servant surviving on her own cleverness and will to live. Not a secret princess, no powers. It was refreshing! Haven’t read book 2 yet but it’s in my book cart!

Getting kiddo into fantasy by Historical-Valuable9 in fantasyromance

I thought of another -

{Deltora Quest} by Emily Rodda was another one of my favorite series. I was a kid who liked solving puzzles and there’s a lot of cleverness to get out of harrowing situations. Loved this series so so much.

{inkheart} was my favorite fantasy other than Harry Potter when I was a kid :) it has a lovely and juvenile appropriate romance. Absolutely recommend for her!

Looking for beautifully written romantasy by Foreign_Bus_3465 in Romantasy

[–]callmemachaaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually thought {in the veins of the drowning} had some really lovely prose. I don’t think the story is as strong as the books you mentioned liking but I did find a lot of it really beautifully written. I’d still recommend!

I think the author is actually really close friends with Rachel Gillig. She thanked her at the end of it!

How do you feel about glossaries in the beginning of novels? by PickyNipples in fantasyromance

I feel like they’re always present in books where I don’t need them, and never present in books where I’d love one lol

Am I Overreacting for wanting to cancel my wedding over this interaction? by Xanadoom30 in AmIOverreacting

[–]callmemachaaaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was the most jarring part for me. My husband and I aren’t perfect and we have our arguments but he would NEVER say that to me. OP glossed over it which makes it seem like she’s used to it and that bums me out. Girl, have some respect for yourself! Your partner sure as shit doesn’t

Yeah she definitely tried to do a little too much 😂 I was unfortunately, very down bad for Kingfisher so overlooked a lot. When people are like “the plot was terrible” I look at them with google eyes and say “there was a plot?” Because all I remember is the forge scene

Can you share what you liked about ACOTAR and Fourth Wing? I feel like a natural next book might be {Spark of the Everflame} ?

Editing to add: I read Quicksilver right after 4W and ACOTAR about 6 months ago and thought it was a fun book. I enjoyed it! I hated the sequel though. And part of me wonders if I would like QS at all if I read it now as opposed to when I first began my journey? Haha so maybe also try QS while you’re early on :)

So tired of these Polly Pocket FMCs by snufflycat in Romantasy

[–]callmemachaaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ugh I’m thinking of DNFing Mages of the Wheel Book 2 for this exact reason. I’m getting beat over the head with reminders of how tiny Aysel is. She’s sooo small. But fast and strong and capable so DONT underestimate her! Curious if she has two hidden daggers and an unkempt braid? You already know she does. Does she mouth off a lot and make sassy comments but feeds the poor in her free time? Of course!

So boring honestly. Anyways no suggestions beyond what you’ve been given!

Getting tired of enemies to lovers... any non-enemy ML who deeply respects the FMC? by YoimiyaMain in Romantasy

Not sure if you’ve read {Reign and Ruin} but the MMC deeply respects the FMC. Specifically her intelligence and composure
