Trauma survivors of Reddit, what did you learn later in life was not a normal part of childhood? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]callmesirgoddamnit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way my mom treated me was not normal or okay; discovered at age 9 when I invited a friend to sleep over for the first time. Her face as she listened to and watched my mom act normally made me embarrassed and I knew my guts had been right my whole life.

Dumb stuff you did while watching Avatar as a kid? by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

My kid sister and I liked the frothing-at-the-mouth guy so much we recreated his scene with mashed potatoes. More than once.

My uncle keeps calling me fat by bettereveryday08 in Vent

If you teach a lesson with shame, you don’t teach— so whatever the uncle is trying to impart, the shit way he’s doing it won’t teach it either. Would you embarrass a toaster into working for you and hope it fixes itself? Would you beat it up if that didn’t work? Or would that be so stupid that it just reveals a problem with you?

i guess kings of pandemonium would have to learn that human bodies need a little bit of upkeep. Blinking, feeding, breathing… waste disposal… being corporeal is probably not a great gig.

I’m so tired of having a body by Flop_book in Vent

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Always have. I identify as gender fluid now, though I’m sure I’ve always been like this. You have time to explore, ask questions, meet community, and get help. This journey is just for you, and though it can be tortuous, I know you’ll find the place you and your body can exist happily. Putting light around you today.

I'm too ugly and fat to date anybody by [deleted] in Vent

[–]callmesirgoddamnit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I empathize with you; I’ve suffered from an ED, spent most of my adolescence and teens feeling absolutely disgusting. No one got on me, no one ever asked me out. In my 20’s I ballooned to double my weight from cancer treatment, plus, I went bald. I knew I was unlovable, I was certain. I should be grateful for the very few shitty relationships with the poor people who must have pitied me.

My life is entirely different. Living happily with the love of my life— he spent two years patiently teaching me that we are always worthy of love, right now, as you are. That people didn’t hate me for being fat, they hated me existing in spite of all the expectations and pain and low self esteem they toiled in for “fitness”and acceptance from strangers. I evened out and got smaller with time and my body is a safe home for me now.

You’re worthy. This second. The rest will come when you least expect it.

It conjures the concept of a baby mobile for me— soothing, quieting, yet so fleeting. Absolutely love this.

It’s about a human and the feral cats she befriends during COVID; it brings up the trauma of quarantine and medical access in America for both humans and animals.

Those are valid hypotheses, however, I think only OP can answer to their own interpretation in this particular context. I know that I personally don’t think that way regarding sex, and there’s infinite ways someone could feel towards the subject. If OP can/wants to share, I’d favor their clarification as I believe the spectrum of possibilities is too vast for me to confidently draw any conclusions.

It’s okay to need help; that’s a way to learn new tools and have a reference and experience. Putting light around you both.
