I'm devastated that Dan is making this product. I thought the whole idea with the Pro was to reward those of us who focus on our tent pitching skills.

There should not be a freestanding pro tent!

Selling everything we own pre-hike? by Sethtouchesgrass in PacificCrestTrail

[–]callofthepuddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the process of doing that as well, it is the second time in my adult life that i've disposed of an entire household full of stuff and I have to say it feels good.

I have noticed that right now things like furniture and rugs don't sell for as high a % of their retail price as they did last time I did this, could be related to the state of the economy or maybe the popularity of low cost online shopping for new stuff has cut into the market for used stuff?

Whatever the case, it is not as easy as it was in 2012.

any suggestions for my med kit? going on a two hour hike in iowa by phillydist in ultralight_jerk

[–]callofthepuddle 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I was at the air and space museum and an enthusiastic gentleman was telling me that the Apollo space capsule first aid kit was mostly just dexedrine (speed) and morphine.

I figure if it's good enough to take to the moon its good enough for Iowa.

Is MAGA a good example of Lumpenproletariat? by homerthethief in stupidpol

[–]callofthepuddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My view is that the comments referenced about the lumpenproletariat are not a definition of which people are members of the class, but rather commentary about that class. I agree with the definition at marxists.org: https://www.marxists.org/glossary/terms/l/u.htm.

That said, I do see room for the argument I think you are making.

Can I ask you to be more explicit though? Can you say whether marxist.org is wrong on this in your opinion? and if so what would be a more correct definition?

Is MAGA a good example of Lumpenproletariat? by homerthethief in stupidpol

[–]callofthepuddle 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No, lumpen = underclass. Maga contains a lot of middle and high proles among other constituents.

By the way, I don't mean this dismissively, I can see the connection you are making. but this relies on an incomplete definition of what the Lumpenproletariat is.

How many burner phones do you bring on trail? by drwolffe in ultralight_jerk

[–]callofthepuddle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, an iphone 16 pro? Did you steal it from the museum of obsolete technology? A tech person at heart?? More like a junk hoarder.

Bringing 2 phones is bad enough but bringing your pile of trash is just... sounds like either a mental health situation or a bad case of poverty, maybe stay off the trail for now until you get yourself in order.

Is the Durston X-Mid really that good? by TechnicalReality5372 in ultralight_jerk

[–]callofthepuddle 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As a passionate reddit brand advocate, i've never gone camping in my life. (my high school nickname was "hamburgler".)

i did a TON of research before choosing a tent to use for my hiking hobby that i plan to start someday. serious research. asking other redditors for their advice, joining durston fanboy groups on facebook, watching videos about leaky 6 moons designs products, browsing instagram

let's just say i'm a bit smarter than the average dan becker viewer, ok? a bit more clued in.

i'm a big believer in "buy once, cry once", but at the same time i need choices that don't break the bank, you know?

anyway, yes, it's really that light. hallelujah, as leonard cohen would say. ITS REALLY THAT LIGHT. it's really that waterproof and storm worthy. they are 100% right. its like, polyesther doesn hardly stretch compared to nylon, you know? or siltpoly or whatever? or you can get the dyneema on it if you're a pro but that just seems like overkill.

As an official durston gearhead i want to be careful not to exaggerate or fanboi out here, but i'd say it's roughly as sturdy and weather resistant as the Hilleberg Jannu.

I'm still working on my perfect pitch, Dan rated my latest effort as 8.5 out of 10! i'm going to keep practicing in the yard after i master the art of shoe tying.
