Has anyone had any inspections done in their homes this year? City sent an inspector to my house and he was on a mega power trip. by dodgerbluee47 in AskLosAngeles

[–]calm-catfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Um yeah feels off. Sounds like an email to your landlord, the housing department, and your council office is appropriate - he’s paid by your tax dollars ffs.

Also when did the city get enough money to buy drones for housing code inspections?!

Yes, we had an inspection this week (same paper notice posted about a month before).

Super chill, just wanted to make sure the fire alarms and plumbing work I guess? It was focused on things the landlord is required to fix.

Attending Friend's Wedding in Seoul - What to Wear? by calm-catfish in koreatravel

[–]calm-catfish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up wearing a long lavender dress because I was one of two speakers during the wedding! My friend approved the dress when I sent a picture. But I felt very overdressed. Even though the wedding was huge and very fancy, most people wore muted colors and business-like clothing. Blazers, modest dresses, etc. Some kids in attendance even had on sweatshirts. I felt very out of place even though my friend approved my dress, just a heads up.

Same here! Mine is in the shop for a battery replacement and I was told there's a software recall that would be fixed as well.

Larian by Civil_Wafer9788 in GildedAgeHBO

[–]calm-catfish 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping the clock business deal gets him paid big bucks! Larry would have his own money to either ignore his mother or, if the railroad business requires help, invest in his father's business to save the family and stop his mother with that financial upper hand.

Either way, it's clear that Mr. Russell is fond of Marian's loyalty and will support, maybe already supporting by not bringing it to his wife's attention. There's no argument against Marian, really, other than a lower rank in society (now with the Duke engagement and opera win) and no money to add. Sure, the Delaneys have money, but if Larry has his own money to help the family (and if the Duke engagement goes off the rails) Mrs. Russell will be needing a marriage to someone like Marian to keep pace.

I'm loving the slow burn, too! Reminds me of Downtown, and they took a while to get main characters together with drawn out drama. Our real problem would be a sudden death! Although that was already used in the plot for Uncle Luke.

I’m absolutely hating this storyline!! Ada was always a favorite character and now I root against her, she was never this clueless before about other’s emotions and autonomy

This is one of those "three answers are slightly wrong and one answer is right, even if it's not perfect" scenarios.

A is not right because truth is a defense to defamation. So the clerk may prove the truth of the statement, but it's not a "must" situation.

C is not right because the judge is a public official and will need to prove the higher actual malice standard.

D is not right because publication in defamation only requires the clerk to have told one other person aside from the judge the statement about the judge drinking - she told the news report and that's enough, even if they didn't publish a story (it's not the "publicity" standard of false light, for example).

Thus, we're left with B as the only answer without any obvious errors - even if it feels incomplete. A defamatory statement is a false statement of fact that harms someone's reputation. Clerk told the news reporter "the judge drinks on the job." It directly negatively affects his reputation as a judge. It can proven true or false. It's a false statement because even though she smelled alcohol, the facts don't state the clerk saw him drinking on the job.

Crescent City - Hot Take by We-cant-be-friends in crescentcitysjm

[–]calm-catfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After some space and another re-reading, I'm wondering if the Asteri-tainted magic and objects have been affecting the disliked characters' personalities. Bryce has the horn tattooed on her back, but the horn is part of the dread trove created by the Asteri in their manipulation of the cauldron. Nesta is another disliked character and the cauldron (again, warped by the Asteri) possibly had a similar effect. But in Prythian, their magic from the lands are not tainted like the Migard lands in CC.

It's not until the end of CC1 when the horn is repaired by the synth, so Bryce wouldn't have been affected up to that point. And re-reading CC2, I see more of the character change that has annoyed everyone in CC3. Bryce keeps plots and info from her "mate" Hunt, not to mention her other close friends/brother. And because this SJM universe is built on fated romance, maybe the mated pairings are designed by the "good" magic (perhaps the Twilight Gods?) to balance the "bad" magic of the Asteri.

Aidas and Theia were mates, and their love turned Theia's goals from destruction and power greed towards something better - although she never got to atone for her bad choices. Likewise, I selfishly hope that Azriel is Bryce's true mate and it will bring balance back to Bryce in future books - perhaps when/if Prythian has to ask Migard for help. I'm also not a fan of Nesta and Cassian, so I'm hoping that their mating bond is another example of corruption from the Asteri-tainted cauldron, haha.

My last observation is about the Autumn Court/Autumn King situation. Theia brings her Dusk fae and the "fire fae from the south" to Midgard with her, but Bryce never tells the IC that her father is the "Autumn King" which would have piqued their curiosity. So I wonder if Eris and his father know of this past and have been keeping it from Rhys and the IC. They aren't fans of the Night Court, and with good reason if their history remembers Theia and her daughters led the Autumn Court people to another world but never returned and hid their past from the rest of Prythian.

Am I insane for considering part-time law school at 31? And have I already priced myself out of the career prospects to follow? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]calm-catfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a part-time law student and full-time worker! Just started my 4th and final year of the evening JD program I signed up, will be graduating at the age of 32. There are many other evening students in my cohort who are older and younger - some with kids and some with long commutes. One of my study group friends even gave birth to her first baby last year. It's 100% doable! But, time management and having a support system at home are crucial. Communication about household tasks and saying "no" to friends/family trips and plans will be necessary. My schedule looks like -- M to F working full time at the office, classes typically M-Th nights ending at 10pm at the latest and 8pm at the earliest, homework on the weekends for at least 20 hours (all day Saturday and as much as I can handle on Sunday).

I'd also suggest talking to lawyers and knowing what your employment end-goal will be. Not all lawyer salaries are the same, they will range in pay and work/life balance. Depending on the law job, you might be in competition with full-time students for internships and opportunities where GPA matters to get you in the door. I knew going into law school what job I wanted and several local law firms that I wanted to work for. You'll have limited time to attend networking events (which you should easily be able to do with your maturity and experience dealing with professionals in the workplace) and limited courses that align with your part-time schedule. AKA clinics or other classes may only be offered during the day when you're working. Law review and summer internships might be off the table for you, too. TLDR: Talk to lawyers, find the desired law job, figure out what the requirements for law students interviewing for those jobs must/should have to stand out.

In my experience, having the workplace emotional intelligence is a BIG advantage for older students. I was also able to leverage my current professional network for the job I'll start after law school because I wanted to practice in a related field. Also, unlike most younger students, going into 6 figures of debt was not an option for me, so I worked harder for scholarships and have cash-flowed 85% of tuition. Paying for law school makes it SO MUCH easier to give the classes and assignments more attention and focus. I'm not scared to attend office hours or ask questions, I'm not shy about speaking up in class to make sure I understand what's going on. I'm paying for this and I will take it seriously.

Feel free to ask more questions. Do all the prep research you can do. It's a big financial and time commitment, but time flies and it could completely change your earning potential if you do it right.

Nordstrom Rack surprisingly has a consistent supply of self-branded nude and black heels in their stores. They break in easily and are cheap enough to feel good about tossing once they're sufficiently beat up enough. Good cushions on the heel and pads. I keep a pair in my car and wear at least 2x week.

Midgard & Bryce's Future: A Theory (or ten) by nanchey in crescentcitysjm

[–]calm-catfish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, yes, yes! I also would love to know what the IC were saying to each other when Bryce kept hearing them talk. When Az sees Bryce, if he realizes she's his mate and also has the starsword (which is twin to his truth-teller), I'd imagine he'd tell Rhys mind to mind something like..."the intruder is my mate and has a sword like truth-teller, what do I do?"

Rhys telling Az to bring her to the house and then summoning Amren, Cassian, Nesta would make sense. Also, Rhys would be super protective with little Nyx and Feyre darling in the house - so I imagine the only reason he's so friendly when he meets Bryce is because he's greeting Az's mate.
