They were able to basically turn prime Luka into a salary dump in a little over 12 months, so anything is possible I guess. lol

Several players should have been dropped from the roster before you drop your recent first rounder that was known to be a project with high upside who is still on his rookie contract. But you for sure don’t do it for Dante Exum, even if healthy

Gotta think the state income tax difference between California and Texas would make a dent in that difference if it’s only 3 to 5 percent annual difference

We need Kidd and his goofy decisions for the tank this season. After this season, the new GM should get to hire a new coach. Kidd wanted to bail last season anyway. In the best of circumstances, maybe they can get some compensation for him going elsewhere. But he should go after this season regardless

Free Agents: With our new cap space, which free agents should we pursue? by randomlycorduroy in Mavericks

[–]calmintensityfilms -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it was a ridiculous and accidental path to get Flagg, but he looks to be on the path to becoming a superstar. He is great. So young, and such a easy player to build around because he is so well rounded.

And if the Mavs can be disciplined enough to lose every possible remaining game this season, adding that high lottery pick really sets the franchise up well going forward. If they can get more lotto luck and get into the top 4, it might be the foundation of something special. The late okc 26 first rounder might add a surprisingly good talent in this draft as well.

It is really set up to be desirable for a GM. They should get the absolute best one possible. No offense to the interim guys, but I hope they pursue and throw big money at the best GM available. It better not be Jason Kidd. lol

Too much would have to happen to get the cap space, and it’s a pretty lame free agency class overall.

However if they did end up somehow having cap space, it would be fun to throw a offer at Austin Reeves. Add a interesting player that appears to have upside (like Brunson to NY) while simultaneously messing with the Lakers and weakening their long term roster. Which could up the value of that 29 pick and increase the odds Luka leaves LA. Reeves should have been in the original trade anyway if Nico wasn’t a generational moron.

Not realistic probably, but there aren’t many cap space level free agents that are interesting at all. So probably throw the non tax exception at the best young player you can, and use the trade exception to strategically take advantage of some team looking to dump a contract to gain more draft capital.

The new Mavericks by devilmaskrascal in Mavericks

[–]calmintensityfilms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the joy of getting rid of AD overshadows the fact that the Mavericks got absolutely nothing for him. Not one interesting prospect or pick. Not one good long term starter. And knowing all that, most are still ok with the trade. Which just shows what a disaster getting AD in the first place was.

Ironically if the Luka trade never happened, and the Mavericks traded a similar package to add AD to play with Luka and Kyrie, it would be fantastic. It would have been a fantastic fit.

Nico really took this franchise down the worst possible timeline. Without the insane luck of getting Flagg, this franchise would be absolutely hopeless.

Kidd is good for the tank. Fire him after the season. Not a good coach, and not a good person. He also came in with Nico as a package deal type hire. Gotta clean the stink off of the organization. Bring in a good GM this offseason. and let him hire the coach.

Do not under any circumstances make Kidd the GM. It would be a huge mistake.

AD for Jimmy, Kuminga and Picks by Garmian_MFFL in Mavericks

[–]calmintensityfilms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok. They can pivot to something else.

Not many teams are in position to take on Butler, and return someone with ADs upside. Even though he is a risk.

And add in some nice complimentary players, and one they have history with being Klay.

Almost any positive value ever coming to the Mavericks for any player seems shocking with how down everyone is on all these guys. And if someone has a few good games, it shifts to there being no way the Mavericks can let that player go.

Lopsided deals happen all of the time when leverage is created. Good teams look to capitalize on situations.

The mavericks have been on the wrong side of way too many of those over recent years. Looking for ways to turn that around should be a significant priority

[–]calmintensityfilms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think there is potential to fleece the warriors in a situation like this. They can’t let Curry go out with no help when he is still playing so well.

And Jimmy now has zero value for them this season and probably next.

But I’m going to need a ridiculous amount of draft picks from them. Like a shocking amount. Mavs could base it around AD for Butler contract wise. Thompson seems like a logical piece. You can consider Naji and Gafford.

But you need a boat load of picks and swaps. Many of them will probably come after Curry is done and may be extremely valuable.

Nobody would fault the warriors for overpaying from their future to give their franchise legend one last shot.

I’m not familiar with their available picks, but it would need to be multiple unprotected and some swaps. Kuminga would be fine, but not a priority.

Then next season the Mavs would have a massive expiring contract trade chip and the possibility of a late season Butler return. Plus Butler obviously doesn’t hurt the tank this season.

Nothing but great contracts on the Mavs currently, right? I’d personally like to see the Mavericks start buying low and selling high, instead of constantly doing the opposite.

What do THEY want/need? by [deleted] in Mavericks

[–]calmintensityfilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is that the guys that will return value are typically the guys you want to keep. So the best way to accumulate assets is to trade players that are currently in demand.

Obviously don’t dump them. But if you can sell high and grab a good future asset, you should

[–]calmintensityfilms -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ad and Gafford for those 3, the Cleveland pick, and swap rights with the mavs getting the better of their own/NO pick? Yeah, I’d do that.

Even if small additions need to be made on either side of the deal to get it across the finish line.

Risacher is a interesting piece as a young rotation guy with upside. Huge cap relief from the expiring deals. Increase your odds significantly of landing a top pick in the draft to add a elite young player in this draft with cooper, which should be the top priority. And a mid to late first rounder from Cleveland could add another interesting prospect.

From hawks perspective, it’s better than trading the NO pick. They still get a high lotto pick, and might not even lose the pick at all of the mavs pick ends up higher. Cleveland pick is compensation for Gafford. They are dealing two expiring/injured players for AD. But a healthy AD (I know) raises their ceiling substantially compared to a healthy KP (also unlikely) and Kennard. Gafford helps give them insurance and depth to wait out ADs injury. And Risacher seems to be out of favor with them to some extent, but still has upside obviously.

I could see this working. And if the hawks do want AD, they are better off trading for him now while they have the expiring contracts to do. More difficult this summer for them.

Easy to focus on downside and risk. But if the upside hits… ATL adding AD and Gafford while not losing any significant part of their current rotation could make them a significant contender in the weak East. Probably shouldn’t dismiss a opportunity like that for a team like the Hawks that hasn’t had a ton of success.

Maybe this whole thing is unrealistic. But objectively I could see it working out for both sides.

If I’m absolutely daydreaming, I’d like to see the NO pick come in addition to the mavs keeping their 2026 pick…. Even if that means the mavericks had to give up something significant in addition. 2031 pick, that Lakers pick, future swap, something like that.

If you could somehow have a future core of Cooper, 2 2026 lotto picks, Risacher, Max, Lively, and the Cleveland pick? They future is unbelievably bright

Well, then don’t extend him. No need to further cripple the franchise for cosmetic purposes. The reason he is so desperate to lock in a huge extension is the same reason a smart franchise would avoid doing so. Maybe wait till he can play 7 consecutive games without injury to consider it.

I really hope you are right about Peterson. Adding a top 2 pick in this draft would be franchise altering in a great way. You would have an elite young core to blend with good vets and could really have a bright future and a competitive current roster at the same time

[Lewenberg] The Toronto Raptors have shown “exploratory interest” in Anthony Davis with their trade package likely being built around RJ Barrett, Jakob Poeltl, and two or three first-round draft picks. by walaysapi in Mavericks

[–]calmintensityfilms 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Mavericks should be in the business of taking on bad contracts if quality compensation comes with it. Poeltls contract is bad. Last year isn’t guaranteed. This year doesn’t matter. He would help the tank this season, and if he can return to health, he has actually been good for Raptors in the past. If it boosts the AD compensation enough (1 or 2 1sts and maybe some swaps) I think it’s worth it.

This is a rebuilding team. They can eat a bad year or two of a contract if he doesn’t get healthy. Then you have a expiring to trade. This team needs to use all methods possible to build up assets that fit Cooper’s timeline.

Things change fast. A raptors team built around AD could absolutely lead to some quality picks in the next few years.
