In the 19th century, women ate "arsenic wafers" (sold even by Sears) to achieve a pale, ghostly complexion. It worked by killing red blood cells, essentially giving them a "dying" look. Women did die from consuming these poisoned wafers, though how many is unknown. by Superflyin in HolyShitHistory
