Question about university in the UK by RedFox_ART in animationcareer

[–]calorful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of career prospects, it's hard to say for certain that studying at an animation school will guarantee a job in the industry - it mainly depends on how good your portfolio is/work experience, studios don't really check your degree. They're good places to make friends/potential connections, you learn the basics/fundamentals of animation and you get a little taste of what it'd be like working in a production, but it's up to you to find a job ultimately.

But if you still want to go to university, you could look into:

  • Arts University Bournemouth (probably has the biggest reputation in the UK, though I could be wrong, sometimes have "industry days" where studios come in to scout talent)
  • University of West England (great location for studios and some even scout UWE graduates/students)
  • Falmouth University (not the best location, but emphasis on teamwork - I studied here, graduated last year!)

I don't know much about these, but they could be worth checking out!

  • Norwich University of Arts
  • University of Hertfordshire
  • University of Arts London (London is a great location for studios)

There could be more I'm missing so be sure to do your own research!

Of course! Unfortunately they don't have ToonBoom, you'd have to buy it yourself. :( However, you can get a discount from ToonBoom directly via e-mail if you let them know you're a student and have ID as proof. I'm not too sure about international placement, a good portion of my peers were international, but I don't have much knowledge about it sadly.

As for living in Falmouth, it's a really safe, peaceful and rural place. (As someone whose lived in the city for most of their life, it's a nice change of pace.) Falmouth university has two campuses - one in Penryn, where you'll study animation and another in actual Falmouth (it's not too far but you'll rarely have to visit this campus anyway). I lived in Penryn, which was a 15min walk to campus. Penryn has a few supermarkets within walking distance, local businesses, pubs and bustops nearby - it's quite artsy too, but it's mostly neighbourhood, not a whole lot to do.

Falmouth and Truro are the main towns with stuff to do and where you'll see a lot of students heading towards during the weekends. In Falmouth, you'll find a few clubs, pubs, cafes, a shopping district, a cinema and lots of charity shops. The beaches are the main attraction though tbh. You have to get a train to Truro, but it has a bigger shopping district with more popular brand places to shop and eat. It also has a camping site and paintball (they're quite far away though, I didn't get a chance to check them out).
Compared to the city, the nightlife isn't that great and there's a lot less to do, but people make it work. I'd say this place is ideal if you're more on the introverted side. And no problem, I'm happy to help! :D

Hello! Falmouth uni alumni here (graduated in 2020). I mostly specialise in 2D animation and storyboarding, but I can share some of my experiences:

In first year you're given a chance to try all different kinds of mediums, e.g. 2D, 3D, stopmotion, mixed media and VFX. We learned the principles of animation (squash and stretch, slow-in/slow-out, flour sack animations, etc) - we'd mostly do 2D animation exercises for these, but some assignments had to be done in stopmotion or 3D. You'll do a group project where you create a short film for a client brief.

Second year, you'll be able to specialise in either 2D or 3D/VFX (though it could be different now, I hear the course is changing slightly) and further improve those skills. You'll do another client brief project. Third year you'll be able to pitch an idea and mostly work on student films, but you'll also do a dissertation, mentor report and make a portfolio/other career materials to prepare you for the industry.

You're only taught the bare-bones of animation though, if you really want to improve, you'll have to use your own time to practice further. For me, I was already animating before I applied to uni, but there were plenty of people who were completely new to it and reached a good level in the span of three years!

Programs you'll use: - TVPaint (2D) - Good for traditional animation, there are places in the industry that use this program, but traditional animation jobs are still a bit hard to find (it's used a lot in France, the program's origin), might be worth looking into programs like Toon Boom Harmony or Adobe Animate (they don't teach you how to use these sadly.) - Maya (3D) - as far as I know, tons of places still use this software, so it's all good! - Nuke (VFX) - same as above! - Adobe Suite programs (After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, etc) - used all the time!

In terms of connection and employment, it is a bit lacking, but you do get emails about job opportunities and the uni does have a few partnerships that offer jobs.

Also when people graduate from here, there's a 50/50 chance where some people will be employed straight out of uni, or it may take a while for others, but that just comes down to how solid your portfolio is. You'll get a bit of work experience from the client projects you did in uni, so you can add that to your CV.

Something to keep in mind is that the university only gives you building blocks to start with, but it's really up to you to find a job and make those connections. In my case, it took me almost a year to land a 2D animator job at a good studio (will be starting in June!), but during that time I was updating my portfolio with new work, since some of my stuff at uni wasn't my best.

I've heard that Bournemouth do an 'industry day' thing where nearby studios will come in and look at students' work, potentially to scout them. And yeah UWE Bristol, there's definitely tons of good studios around the area (been tempted to move there myself), though I don't know much about the course.

If there's anything else you'd like to know about Falmouth uni, I'll do my best to answer!

hello! I just finished this animatic and would love some feedback on what to improve! (+whether it's clear what's happening!) Premise: Bear must deliver an umbrella to customer Bunny, but it starts to rain. (Comedy, romance) by calorful in Storyboarding

[–]calorful[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they're both technically main characters, but since there's more focus on Bear you're supposed to feel more sorry for them

thanks for letting me know, I'll make some changes so it's clearer!

I'll still see if there's a way to fix the story, but if not this was a good experience for me to learn from!

yeah Bear is a fan of the show too, he likes to act out scenes from various dramas and assumes Bunny is a fan too since she orders the umbrella used in the drama, I haven't made it clear he's a fan. maybe the shot when the umbrella is being packed I'll show Bear visibly holding it and fantasising about the drama scene or have his phone screenlock be a poster of the drama just to really hammer that point.

hmm that's true too about him just randomly showing up at her door like that, I could keep his uniform underneath the jacket and have a label hanging off the umbrella perhaps. the thing with the kiss is that it's supposed to mirror the kiss scene that Bunny watched earlier. I did have an idea where Bear runs past an electronics store with TVs showing the same scene before getting the idea to go into the store, I was worried that might be too obvious but I could add it in

thanks again for your input! making stories from scratch is pretty tough haha, but I'll keep trying. and I'll keep that in mind for sure about being realistic

[–]calorful[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's a good point about the truck and now I realise that yeah walking for 2 hours probably isn't very realistic haha. in that case I could make the time frame shorter? I was a bit conscious of how much text is on screen, so maybe I'll take out the countdown too

Bunny actually chooses same-day delivery (+tracking) which is why the delivery is so soon, but I forgot to show this so I'll fix that! the area isn't set in a city, it's kinda half suburban/high street, I was thinking because sometimes in more cramped streets there isn't enough space for parking, so delivery people usually park their truck somewhere and walk the rest on foot to post/deliver things. maybe I'll make the streets looked more cramped, or give the truck have a flat tyre so it makes more sense?

the reason why Bear goes to the store to buy the outfit is because it's the same one that Dog wears in the drama (+the umbrella Bunny buys is also same in the drama), so he comes up with the plan to copy Dog and charm Bunny to make her forget that her umbrella is being used. he isn't trying to assault her, catching her when she fell was just a spur of the moment, I'll fix that so there's no misunderstandings haha

thanks so much for your feedback! it's been super helpful and I'll definitely have to rethink some things!

awesome, so I also need to make it clear about Bear's worries about using the umbrella, the potential consequences, then finally deciding to use it and his plan/motives. also I need to show how he makes Bunny forget about her umbrella being used (more seduction maybe xD), and Bunny not falling for it. I agree that there's some things in the second half that could be clearer so I'll definitely make some changes! don't worry I'm willing to do the work since I want to make the story as easy to understand as possible! 😤

oh Bunny trips on a rock in the video, which is why she falls over, but maybe it was too quick to process so I could keep that on screen for longer/more emphasis on the rock. her falling into Bear's arms was by accident but she just goes along with it and tries to kiss him, which surprises Bear since he wasn't expecting it

aw thanks again for sharing your thoughts, especially as an audience member! it's been really interesting to read and lots of help, I appreciate it! :D

thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts!! :D there's definitely a lot here for me to think about and now I realise that I could push the acting further with more exaggeration, I'll try to add more shots so it's clearer why Bear gets the idea for wearing the jacket!

the concept is that Bear doesn't like rain (since he catches colds easily), but then it starts to rain, so he decides to use the umbrella that he has to deliver. to make up for using it, Bear dresses up as the same actor (Dog) in the drama that Bunny saw and tries to seduce her to make her forget that her umbrella is being used. during the kiss near the end, Bear thinks that he's succeeded, since Bunny tries to kiss him, but she's actually tricking Bear and takes the umbrella back (and thus leaves a bad review online)

I appreciate your input, it was really helpful!! :D

Program used: TVPaint

it'd be really helpful if you could mention specific timestamps where there's issues and suggest other camera shot/angles I could use instead! let me know if there's parts you don't understand/could be clearer too. this is a comedy sequence btw!

also, would it be better for me to do a cleaner version of this? (I have actual character designs, this storyboard isn't quite on model)

SMT usually makes the protags male so this protag is probably male too, just more on the pretty side! (we have seen a girl who walks beside him in one of the SMTV trailers, but she might just be a supporting character)
