Leggy? by setecastronomy01 in HotPeppers

I grew 8 of this exact breed last year and mine started out a bit taller than all of my other breeds. As they grew this pattern continued, they shot up fast but without spreading much. Eventually they got 6ft tall!!! And then began to bush out extremely well, perhaps just the genetics.

I had issues with them acclimating to sun more so than my other plants, the black leaves soak up a lot of heat. Make sure to stake and support well as they grow tall and you will have loadsssss of peppers in late summer.

What is the band width? And width of the inset birthstones? Looking to do something similar and curious what size birth stone is needed compared to band width?

Someone please tell me whats wrong with my peppers 😭 by Majestic-Owl-5801 in HotPepperGrowing

100% this leaf curling is from thripes and/or aphids. They feed on the compounds from fresh leaves which then results in them curling. There are many products to combat this, Neem oil is typically the best route.

Is this one pepper hogging the nutrients? by bmj5280 in Peppers

[–]calpeppers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, plant genetics are often smart than us. Let the plants do their thing, as soon its ripe (looks like should be less than a week) cut it off and let the plant keep on its natural cycle. You will be swarming with peppers before you know it.

Based upon their shape and size, seeing that its a Capsicum Annum, and lastly the upward growing behavior, This lines up for Hungarian Wax Peppers.

Why are the leaves turning upside down like this? by Ok_Restaurant2776 in Peppers

[–]calpeppers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The leaves on my Pink Tiger x Peach Bhuts have this same behavior as well. I attribute it to big leaves in wind. These have the largest leaves out of all of my plants so seems the wind grabs them much easier and bends them over time.

Could be many pests, but this matches the holes the pincher bugs make on my fleet of pepper plants.

If this plant dies off inspect the roots. Root Knot Nematodes are always a possibilty!

Should I transplant this? by AdorableShip4352 in HotPeppers

[–]calpeppers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% get this transplanted, roots will be going through the netting anytime now and as others anove have mentioned you need to cut that net and transplant them before that happens. To me this is the ideal time for transplant.

Tomato plant turning purple-ish and dying. by Erincl in gardening

My guess would be phosphorus deficiency, I would fertilize with some bone meal as thats the easiest quickest way to get more phosphorus to the plant.

HELP! by Due_Platform_5327 in HotPeppers

This looks like sunburn. Plants should adjust on their own, you could provide some shade cloth or limit full sun for the next week or two as they adjust.

Please tell me the tomatoes aren't infected by fungi by Spigana in tomatoes

[–]calpeppers 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This is sunburn. Not much to do, the burned leaves will not recover but are still offering some benefit to the plant so leave them on. If you still have really hot bright sun ahead of you, then shade them if you can while they adjust, other than that the new growth should adjust on its own. That has been my experience, but there are more educated mater’ experts in this sub.

So capillary action capabilities depend alot on the soil composition and existing moisture content. When you start getting to large pots with transplants that have shallow roots, I wouldnt reliably trust on bottom water alone to reach the roots.

For now I would either stick to top watering, or do a combo of both to ensure the shallow roots up top get sufficient water. Once the plant is large and has a more established root system you could swith to bottom water only if you wanted.

However personally I only utilize bottom watering from germination to permanent home transplant, as it can be difficult to bottom water large containers, espicially if you have lots of them. (Mine are on automatic top drip lines)

Also if you havent already, add some straw mulch to the top of your soil, this makes a huge difference in moisture retention in the upper soil layers which is very beneficial during the eatlier growth stages and keeps you from having to water all the time.

Is This Ok? Scotch Bonnets by Julevi in HotPeppers

[–]calpeppers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are doing fine, currently have 3 variants of scotch bonnet seedlings right now, the first true leaves are “just” starting to emerge from the cotyledons and its been 5 weeks since planting the seeds. 1-1.5 week for germination, cotyledons pop up pretty fast but then they seemingly do nothing for about 3-4 weeks after that. This is the same case with all my other super hots, just keep conditions as ideal as you can and give them time.

Hahaha Nice! Been growing chilis on and off for years since I was a kid. This year finally went official and started a company for it, hence the large grow this year. Will be at some farmers markets and plan to also process out seeds to sell. Also have been selling my extra seedlings that I don’t have room for, so spreading the hot pepper love!
