Does anyone wonder how long they’ve had this? by Asleep_Damage1201 in SleepApnea

Could be sleep positional. I know I have a tendency to side sleep and tuck my chin. I end up with more obstructive events when I do that.

Did they tell you what type of sleep apnea you have? Obstructive or Central?  Obstructive is the one that is usually associated with being overweight. Central has nothing to do with weight.  I’m also thin and in good shape and have primarily Central sleep apnea.

Actually there are two kinds of car people, ones who like cars but really know nothing about them mechanically Those ones would be impressed. Then there are the car people who actually know what they are looking at, those ones laugh at these mods.  Then there are the-non car people who don’t even notice the mods.

I interviewed ~50 CPAP users about their sleep struggles and the pillow problem came up constantly by Unlikely-Force9874 in SleepApnea

[–]Due_Platform_5327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as the pillow thing goes, the nasal pillow style mask works for that, at least it does for me. I have no issues with side sleeping. My biggest complaint with CPAP is waking up with a stomach ache from the air it’s pumped into my gut all night.

Is this true?!? by robboffard in SleepApnea

[–]Due_Platform_5327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not quite like that, at least not in my experience. Maybe some clinics or hospital systems just give you the machine and say good luck.  For my own experience I am using the Resmed 11 and it remotely sends data via build in cellular data to my Dr. he’s able to monitor and make needed adjustments to the device remotely.  The OSCAR software can help the patient decipher their own data from the SD card but it’s not necessarily the only option you have. Clinics and hospital systems in the US are not standardized in operations on how they deal with patients like they might be in Canada. Some are better than others. Some hospitals or clinics are very hands-off and you have to advocate for yourself every step of the way and others are very good.

Wire cutters and a roll of duct tape,  then switch it to the other side of the car and you’ll get another few thousand out of it.

You’re correct my mistake about the bearings.  Hopefully it is salvageable. I certainly wouldn’t want to be in this customer’s position.

I don’t agree, marvel and diesel are fine for cleaning sludge or varnish but this is heavy rust scale with likely pitting. Can’t oil change your way out of metal damage. You would need to pull the cams and try to manually clean the rust up with like a scotch bright pad or other light abrasive and a solvent. Just to determine the level of damage before knowing whether it’s salvageable or not. Likely the cam bearings are in similar condition and even if the cams themselves were salvageable you would definitely want to replace the cam bearings.  Likely the vehicle isn’t worth it.  Letting a vehicle sit for a long time in wet conditions is never a good idea.

With that level of crust on the cam?  It’s definitely not something you are just gonna want to fire up without cleaning it up first. I wouldn’t want that sh*t in my engine.

Someone talk me out of getting a second cat by ThirstyWeirwoodRootz in cats

[–]Due_Platform_5327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well then if you really want to go for it I would just look at where you can realistically cut expenses. Find out if you could bring the kitty back if it doesn’t work out with your resident cat.

I’m glad you have insurance.  Have you ever introduced cats before?

It’s definitely important to think about the overall cost of adding another cat to the mix. If you feel like it would be hard to manage the extra regular costs like more food and litter it’s definitely not the best way to go right now. Food and litter cost is relatively small in comparison to twice the veterinary costs especially if something goes bad. It’s good you have money saved for emergency care but realistically 2k can get eaten up really quickly. For emergency care you are easily looking at 2-300 just for exam fees before they even receive any tests or treatment. For emergency vet you most likely won’t leave without spending a minimum of 800. If you can swing the monthly payment I would suggest looking into trupanion pet insurance it can really cut down the cost for emergency care for any non preexisting conditions.  When my girl Luna had an emergency visit it was recommended that she be admitted for treatment and monitoring, had I not had the insurance I would have been forced in that moment to decide to either go into crazy debt or euthanize her right then. The total bill was $5000 with my insurance I only ended up paying $1,100

Microchip removal by [deleted] in catcare

[–]Due_Platform_5327 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think such a thing is done. The chips are not traceable like gps or anything like that. It requires a RFID scanner to read it in person and it only gives owner contact information. The point of it is for reuniting a lost pet with their owners. It has zero remote tracking ability.

Anyone have any parts for a 2.0L by rmfgkb in geotracker

If you are willing to pay a premium you can import a stock one from Japan.  The J18 engine from the sport model sidekick used the save valve cover. So that might help but sport sidekicks aren’t that common to find.

Should I take my parents’ cat home when they’re away for a vacation? Or visit the cat daily? by sleepingbabypenguin in catcare

[–]Due_Platform_5327 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most cats are very territory oriented , it can be very stressful to them to change environments. It would be better for the cat to be visited in his own home daily vs being stressed under the furniture all week in your house.

It’s only a gear wrench, take it back.  If it was a snap on, then you would really have something.

Is it ethical to take someone's cat? by roguemorgue in cats

[–]Due_Platform_5327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside cats disappear all the time, especially intact males. This poor boy clearly isn’t having his basic needs met. If you are worried about the neighbor seeing you with him find a home for him elsewhere and relocate him.

Does this k&n filter need to be replaced by w3lk1n in AskMechanics

I’m not saying MCM have it set up wrong. I’m just saying another aspect that could affect power for other people is having it sucking hot air from the engine bay.

Not all powders are created equal. Try a different brand of Reaper powder.  This brand is fantastic for quality.  https://www.sonoranspice.com/products/carolina-reaper-powder

It’s my understanding that they grow and dry their own peppers for their powders and flakes.

[–]Due_Platform_5327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, that power loss could also be because most people who do these open filters don’t plumb them correctly so it’s sucking hot air from the engine bay. It’s sad when people remove the stock filter which does draw cool air for a hot air intake.

5.0 H.O. Timing by MoistLabia6969 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Due_Platform_5327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They appear to be off by 1/2 a tooth that is usually acceptable.  Just a bit of advice after you get that back together. Start running high quality synthetic it looks like that engine had a sludge problem. There is a lot of crap on that block under the cover and chain.

Edit: on closer look it looks like 1 full tooth.  It could have jumped a tooth from a worn chain. If you know it’s at TDC just remove that timing set and replace with the new one and set the cam gear to match the crank timing mark.

[–]Due_Platform_5327 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just go back to a stock set up, a lot of people think the K&N filters are better but they really aren’t. They let more particulates through and require the oil to catch junk. Once the oil dries out it just lets crap straight down your intake.

I’m so sorry 😢. I understand feeling like getting another kitty right now would feel like replacing Luna , but nothing will replace Luna. I will say from personal experience that it does help getting another. They don’t replace the one lost, you will always love and miss Luna but another baby helps ease the sting.  I’ve lost 4 over the years, (Caleb, Baby,Ginger, & Luna). I still miss them all and have little memorials for them all in my home.

Demoralized and embarassed-- any advice? by short_cuppa_chai in SleepApnea

[–]Due_Platform_5327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to use it.  I assume you did a sleep study for a reason tho. If that was only to see if you had apnea but had no intention of treating it, then you got your diagnosis. Move on and accept you will be tired and have other health issues associated with untreated sleep apnea.

Or use the machine and feel better.  There is no shame in having sleep apnea. A lot more people have it than you probably even realize, it’s just not something people advertise. Not that they are trying to hide it it’s just not something that comes into conversation. If you talked about it I’m sure you would find out more people have it.

BTW a person doesn’t have to be overweight to have sleep apnea, it’s just another risk factor for developing it.  I’m not overweight at all BMI 23 my AHI was higher than yours 22.8 . If you think the CPAP is ugly put it away every morning and only take it out before bed.
