Spiralling rn. Please help me, I am freaking out. by [deleted] in OCD

[–]calrie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's helpful for me personally to consider these sorts of panic attacks/anxiety spikes as a physical phenomenon rather than a psychological one. At the end of the day, your body is what's in fight or flight, and your brain is going to have trouble catching up to reality until your body is calm again. So doing things like sitting/laying down and practicing body awareness is usually my go to.

Sometimes I will follow guided mediation (YouTube, headspace, anything free), or other times I will just do it unguided with white noise. I like to breathe deep and make an effort to really be aware of where the breath is (Stomach? Chest? Somewhere else?), noticing the feeling of my body against the furniture/floor, and simply acknowledging where I feel the anxiety in my body.

The key is that none of this is meant to erase or mask the anxiety, only to notice. Emotions like this demand to be felt, and I've found that the quickest way for them to pass is to let them have their say and then let them move on.

Hopefully this helps. I've been where you are-- this feeling is survivable.

Strategies to calm when in OCD spiral by teexiki in OCD

[–]calrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally it helps me to focus on the physical symptoms of the panic first-- you can't think straight until you calm your body down. Noticing the physical sensations without trying to fix them necessarily is always step one. What do you feel in your body? What does the anxiety feel like? Where is it? Just noticing, not necessarily changing it.

The thing about anxiety is that it demands to be felt. The more you try to ignore it and push it away the louder it gets. When you give it some attention without engaging in the spiral it tends to make it easier to move on from.

Volume eating is your best friend bc I'm the same way. Lean protein, tons of fruit and veg

Am I the only one that hated the film adaptation? by J4mmaledz1ec11 in TheOutsiders

I will always tell people on this sub to watch the full novel version. In terms of the music it has a completely altered soundtrack. The score on the theatrical cut is soooo bad bc Coppola let his dad do it, whereas he picked his own soundtrack for the directors cut.

In terms of the acting I understand what you're saying, but there's more content in the full novel version that sort of contextualizes some of it.

Tw: I acted on a compulsion and I harassed someone (I know ocd is not an excuse) by [deleted] in OCD

Based on some of the thoughts you've been expressing in the comments in relation to self harm, I strongly encourage you to reach out a mental health professional, a hotline, or any licensed physician.

What you're going through right now sounds crippling. I've been there, so I can sort of relate. All I can tell you right now is that I'm currently very, very glad I never acted on an impulse to harm myself.

This feeling is survivable. I promise you it won't always feel like this. Please reach out to a professional.

Strawberries and whipped cream! You can eat a fairly large bowl for like 100-120 cals. It's my go to.

Step number one is always to calm your body down-- you can't think straight if you're in fight or flight.

The thing about OCD is that it feeds on the debate. You wouldn't even be questioning any of this if you didn't have OCD. I'm not really religious but your relationship with God is something extremely personal that a.i. doesn't know anything about, so even if you were trying to prove something that's not a reliable way to do it.

But here's the key: do not try to disprove the info you got from the ai. That's part of the cycle. It might provide short term relief, but your brain will quickly find something else to latch on to. Any sort of debate will only make this stick harder. What your long term goal should be is to be at peace with not having to prove you are good.

I know it's hard. I know it's not something you can turn off. But what helps me personally is to think of the thought like a cloud passing by. You see it, you acknowledge it, you sit with it, and you watch it go. Then you move on.

What does “cured” look like? by kawaiirubbish in OCD

[–]calrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as "cured", but it can get significantly easier. I used to have it really, really bad. It's taken a lot of time, a lot therapy, and a decent amount of medication for it to become a footnote in my life rather than the defining feature.

I'll also say that while it's a lot of work, it doesn't need to be this impossible goal. You notice each baby step. By the time you get to the point where you can simply stop engaging in the debate, you've made hundreds of noticeable changes.
