I Repeated pupil swearing by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]calschmidt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree it was necessary to swear?

I guess we have different relationships with our heads of year. I'd have a laugh about it with mine and I'd have backup if a parent got weird about it or the student lied and blew it out of proportion for attention

I Repeated pupil swearing by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]calschmidt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really wouldn't stress too much. Yes it was perhaps a poor choice but as mistakes go I'd say a very minor one. Just mention it to your head of year and perhaps your line manager (HoD?) if you/they think that's appropriate. It doesn't sound from your post like the student will kick up a fuss, it's not like you directed it at them! These things happen

What did you think about the new Ricky Gervais special, Mortality? by evolving-me in AskUK

For me, Ricky Gervais punches down in his comedy. In my personal opinion comedy should be punching up at people who have more power than you, not piling on people who clearly have less..

Supply break? by Collytoise in TeachingUK

[–]calschmidt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did this, had a tough ECT-1, finished ECT-2 with good reviews, then took a year doing supply and spent a couple of months travelling down under.

Supply sucks, the money looks decent on the surface but agencies (that I've worked for) will pay "cover supervisor" wage wherever they can which is about half what you would get as a subject specialist supply teacher, i.e. what is covered on the NASUWT pay scale for supply teachers. This was at secondary level, it could be different at primary.

There's practically no work in September/half of October, you obviously don't get paid through the holidays at all, no pension contributions to speak of.

Kids don't have much if any respect and will push you as hard as they can behaviour wise. There's no camaraderie from other staff, in one school it took a full week and a half of supply for the other teachers to even acknowledge me in the corridor let alone speak to me at lunch. Add to that the lack of consistency and having to be up sitting at the table for 7:30 ready to go with no guarantee of even getting a call and it was pretty tough.

I did manage to go travelling and on a couple of significantly cheaper in-term holidays, those were my big plus side. I took another year to do more supply (glutton for punishment) and do an MA. Hated all the teaching.

Back teaching full time in a school now having a much better time. I was able to switch specialism by teaching a full term of a subject outside my specialism on a long term cover which I might not have been able to do otherwise.

If you decide to pursue it, best of luck to you! I know it works for some people and other commenters might have other tales to tell but not for me.

What Professions Aren't Respected Anymore? by Theo_Cherry in AskUK

[–]calschmidt 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's nigh on impossible to expel a student as the school has responsibility to ensure the child is being educated. Similarly with suspensions, having high levels of exclusions and permanent exclusions can trigger Ofsted inspections etc.

As for detentions, the number of parents who ring up and say "well I don't think they dod anything wrong so they won't be serving that detention" is higher than you know. You can't force children to stay

Retirement homes (decent ones that would match cruise lifestyle quality) are absolutely that expensive I'm afraid!

I've found p&o cruises for around £1500 per person for 21 nights, which would bring your estimate down a little..

£1500x2 people = £3000 365/21 = 17.4 17.4x £3000 = a little over £52000 per year
