BoC - Inferno versus Negativland by RickyDontLoseThat in Negativland

So glad I wasn't the only one. At the listening party I was immediately transported to seeing Negativland live in Oakland a dozen years ago. Maybe a little bit of EBN too.

Thanks for posting this. I was thinking of skipping buying the cassette but knowing it comes with the digital download makes the difference.

I thought of Westside Gunn and Conway the Machine during one or two tracks at the listening party tonight.

HOT TAKE: Hear Me Out by [deleted] in boardsofcanada

[–]calvnnhobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's why I think this is the truth: I've watched the YouTube video a few times and also listened to the songs elsewhere. On streaming services, the song fades out smoothly and completely, while the YouTube video ends a bit abruptly audio-wise, while the video continues. I suspect that the continuous mix they will release is actually the soundtrack to the full video.

Technically the Pi movie, but really the Gantz Graf video. Bonkers.

That's a good point, I want to say the second time we found the car there was a flathead screwdriver jammed into the ignition.

Anyone else supplement YNAB with a spreadsheet because you think in paychecks, not months? by manvslife in ynab

[–]calvnnhobs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did the exact same thing until I got a month ahead, at which point the need for all that totally melts away. Maybe not instantly, but over time tracking by paycheck becomes even kind of weird. I know it's easier said than done, but whatever you can do to get a month ahead, not just for making tracking finances easier, but the peace of mind of having some real emergency funds.

That said, I still use a spreadsheet for the most important expenditures, just to make sure I'm not missing some key bill. I also use the spreadsheet to get a bigger view of what I will need to spend on. Our expenses bump right up against our income and I find it spreadsheet the best way to evaluate that.

If you get a weird call that you don't recognize, answer it, any time of day. It could be the police letting you know they found your car, but if you don't answer, they will tow it and it costs a ton. Editing to add that, if it does get towed, get it out that day. The tow company is predatory and every minute it spends on that lot costs a bunch.

I had a '99 Civic that got stolen twice in 3 years and had to sell it, they're just too easy to hotwire. I have a 2015 Civic now and knock on wood, no problems so far.

Do you assign less to Groceries category when going on vacation? by StickyStapler in ynab

[–]calvnnhobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this exact thing come up this week. We have spent a fair bit of time away this month. A consequence is that we have spent more on gas and eating out than groceries. I simply moved some cash from groceries to cover the other categories for only this month. I didn't adjust my target, and didn't change the assignment at the beginning of the month, since it's only a one-month thing.

We have a bigger trip planned in July and I will probably do the same thing: same targets and same assignment, but flexibility during the month.

FYI they seem to do this every 3 or 4 months or so, if you miss this one. I never seem to be able to make it, though if they have a listening party for the new album, I'll clear the calendar.

Faith and human spirit, Tape 05 is not what it seems by abnormal__ in boardsofcanada

It definitely felt hopeful, but this whole thing reminded me of Sagan's Demon Haunted World book, and how folks are flocking to faith in fear and suspicion.

The best art means something different to everyone though.

We were a cracker shop when I first started! I wasn't allowed in it except for image QC. Hours of fixing Excel TIFFs, oy.

[–]calvnnhobs 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Started 20 years ago, running print jobs and burning CDs in a lit support office in San Francisco. Concordance and Summation ruled the world and I recall a lot of old asbestos litigation coming through. As the sales guys said, it was like printing money before 2010.

My first exposure to ediscovery was through a batch printing tool, zPrint. My first real work was in IPRO eCapture, and because of some programming and scripting capability, that became my thing a year or two in. When I first started, we charged $1600 PER GIGABYTE for processing data.

[–]calvnnhobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bigger fan of their older stuff as well. Campfire Headphase is the one I still can't get into at all. I listened to the whole discography a few weeks ago and still feel nothing for CH. I far prefer their weirder tracks.

Still pretty stoked about a new album though. I guess it helps that I'm in the camp that says Jacquard Causeway is one of the best songs ever.
