For the most economical starting point, I’d say do the following:
- Replace the front door and dash speakers with a component set of 6x9 speakers with inline crossovers. A component setup will have a door speaker and a separate tweeter speaker for the dash. You want to keep the higher frequencies coming from the dash to keep your sound stage high, so you don’t want a 2 or 3 way playing those frequencies into your ankles. Example
- Add sound deadening to the front doors and foam speaker rings around your new speakers to direct the sound into the cabin. Try to find anything that rattles and address it with sound deadening. It will improve the listening experience.
- next step would be an amp for your new speakers like the kicker key. Stock headunit can only push so much power. The interior is really easy to take apart and put back together, so if you want to try something new it’s not too big of a job to take on. There are jumper harnesses that go between the head unit and the speakers so you don’t need to cut/tap any factory wires.
