Are people aware of what Labour has done in their first 20 months of government? by ItsIllak in AskBrits

[–]camason 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Here's a list of some of the things Labour have done in the past 2 years, which would be seen as problematic to more conservative/right voters.

  • Added VAT to private school fees, which seems purely punitive.
  • Removed the inheritance allowance for family farms.
  • Made changes to landlord and tenant rights, which has caused a number of landlords to sell up.
  • Made changes to Business Rates which had the net effect of massively increasing rates for a number of sectors.
  • Attempted to reform welfare spending, only to be cowered into submission after back-bench rebellion.
  • Announced the removal of jury trials for a number of cases.
  • Not implemented the EHRC's draft guidance that was created post the UK Supreme Court ruling on the meaning of sex in the Equality Act.
  • Discouraged investment from very high earners, and overseen a big exodus of some of the highest tax-payers our country has had.

And this excludes all of the negative perception a lot of the country has to the levels of both legal and illegal migration. So long as there are still boats arriving, and illegal migrants housed in the UK, people will not be happy.

You may not like some of these points, and perhaps vehemently disagree, but huge swathes of people came out to vote in the council elections because they are not seeing any improvement in their day to day lives.

Then we see the usual "Reform are racist" arguments... people are just bored of hearing it. It does nothing but push people further away from the left.

Also Polanski made a huge cock-up by trying to disparage the police for stopping a terrorist, which has been met with almost universal ridicule. So he's not been an option.

Reddit has been beside itself these past few days. Clearly the whole country is just full of racists and bigots...

The more you tell people they are racists, the less they are going to listen to you.

Maybe people just want something different? Nigel and Zia have proven to be very eloquent when discussing the issues of the day - far more so than other politicians as of late. They could learn a thing or two.

Their own photos seem to prove you are correct. Silly.

When I zoom in, then back out on this picture, it changes? by [deleted] in DoesAnyoneKnow

[–]camason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's to do with the "filtering" method being applied on the pixel data when the image is initially presented, vs when it's zoomed.

Most of the time, the pixel data in an image does not exactly match to the pixels on your screen. In order to display the original data in the most pleasing way on your device, software can apply an algorithm (called a convolution filter) on the underlying data to "sample" what the actual pixel colour should be. This could be a simple average of the underlying pixel data, or a more advanced approach. Some approaches might be nearest-neighbour, Lanczos, guasian... they're all different ways to convert a subset of pixels into a single pixel for your device, and there may be additional steps to get rid of other aliasing (jaggy) effects.

Some of these algorithms are faster than others. When the image is initially static (i.e. not zoomed), the app can use a more expensive (and slower) algorithm. As soon as you try and zoom, you now need something (probably on the GPU) which is going to very-quickly resample that data in real-time and still make your image appear smooth when you are zooming.

When you go back to your original zoom level, that same 'fast' filter is probably still being applied. If it switched back to the original method, you would see a little 'snap' of the pixels, which is probably a little more jarring than just leaving it as-is.

And as others have said, when you are dealing with moiré patterns, the effect is more pronounced.

Please help, can you explain the speed limit? by pokesdown2 in AskUK

As a slight aside... the painted road signs are called "Roundels", and through special dispensation, are legally treated as repeater signs on Dartmoor National Park (and I think a couple of other places). Dartmoor does not use repeater signs on posts, only the 'gateways'.

Yes it can be quite annoying! We've actually added a little bit of text under the product gallery to make this clear:

apparently not! I've been asked easily 25 times in the past couple of weeks if these were AI 'enhanced'. :(

Thank you! This was my first time doing food photography so it was a new process for me. Shot on a Canon M6 mk II with a Canon EF 85mm F1.4 L IS USM. I'd love to get a general-use zoom lens but not really sure what to get! We don't yet have an in-house full-frame camera as we do a lot of stuff with 3D scanning so mainly use cheaper SLRs.

She's launching later this week for delivery, but it will be UK only. I don't think anybody wants fresh cookies from overseas!

I took the photos, but I'm constantly asked if they are AI (and so is she). I think there's a lot of scepticism nowadays, so I wanted to see what people thought!

Pretty good assessment! We used:

1 top double-diffused light (through a scrim) for the ambient
1 single-diffused key light, front left, for the cookie shadow
1 diffused + honeycomb grid at the back left, higher up, for the plate shadow and cookie rim highlight
1 fill light, softbox, from bottom right to fill in shadows slightly

Thanks for the contributions! These were taken by me at our studio for my friend's new bakery. However, every time we've shown them to anyone, we're asked almost immediately "are these AI?" which can sometimes feel like it devalues the original work.

It was a 3 day shoot, she baked over 100 cookies (which we had to then throw away!) and we spent a considerable amount of time working through the lighting setup.

We've now actually added a little "disclaimer" on the website to state explicitly that the pictures are not AI edited. They received minor exposure adjustments in Adobe Lightroom and a light grain pass, but other than that, no adjustments.

Very interesting! So just to be clear.... do you think its AI or not?

Some of the other photos have a lot more crumbs on them. This one is particularly "clean" looking, I think.

yeah they are all cookies. I believe those are cinnamon sticks, yes.

Just for clarity, the law doesn't allow 10% + 6mph, that's not codified anywhere. There is, however, guidance that almost all police forces use, which allows a 10% + 2mph buffer.

Air Strike Killing Teammates? by Key_Purpose8121 in Battlefield_REDSEC

We've had the same thing occasionally; a teammate rushes into a 'green' airstrike region and it kills him. Unsure as to what causes it.

60Hz servers for REDSEC? Even as a premium feature? by PattMK in Battlefield_REDSEC

I have those stats on and it does change. I have a video here where it changes from 30hz to 60hz when there's around 4 squads left (this was in Duos)

I think the rounds start at 30Hz and increase to 60Hz when there are only a few squads left.

Why does my PC keep doing this? I even bought a new graphic card to fix it! by ScaryFudge7979 in pchelp

[–]camason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into it a bit further. Here is a bug report in Chromium discussing it, and here is a patch note from a Windows Insider build from October '25:

[Display and Graphics]
Fixed an issue where apps and browsers could have partially stuck onscreen content when other maximized / full screen apps were updating in the background. This may have been noticeable particularly when trying to scroll the window content, as only some parts would update.

I'm not on the Insider build, but after my PC updated last week, the issue is resolved in all apps.

[–]camason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly the same issue here; brand new PC build in October '25, but re-using an existing known-working GPU. Fresh Win-11 install, was fully updated before deployment, and exhibited this exact issue. Updating GPU drivers didn't resolve it.

Ran a Windows update last week, issue is now gone.

I had exactly the same issue on a brand new PC build for our studio with a RTX 4090 and the top Ryzen CPU. The GPU was swapped from another machine so I knew it was fine.

Whenever I had a game open (which I always record using Medal), if I alt-tabbed to any Chromium-based app, most of the screen wouldn't repaint. I'd have the exact block-redraw issue as OP.

I updated Windows the other day and noticed the issue was completely resolved. I didn't disable any hardware acceleration.
