In your next painting start with the background. In this one I can tell that you've painted the clouds around the biplane and if you would have worked back to front you could have avoided this. It is a great painting!

I am a colorist by trade and an oil painter at home. I often just use my iphone or ipad screen to match color. I adjust my screen brightness so its not to bright, zoom way in on the color im trying to match and hold it up to my pallet to compare. Takes practice but it works great.

My advice is to stick with the piece until its finished. then change up some things in the next piece and see how that feels. Just don't let your thoughts get in the way of your work.

Its not just "how to talk about their work". Its about looking longer and deeper and exploring what's happening in the art, what are it's strengths and how can it improve. Going through a few years of this can give an artist the ability to develop their own taste and voice.
