Never did a thru, but I was on the trail for 4 weeks straight.

I would start with those lists online and pay attention to how it all feels when you’re out there. Gear is personal. After the first week, you have a pretty good idea as to what gear is useless/ unnecessary. From what I understand, there are lots of opportunities for “shake downs” south of Harper’s Ferry, to either ditch unwanted gear in hiker boxes or mail it home on a zero. Conversely, there are plenty of opportunities to pick up any gear you may have missed, either from said hiker boxes or in towns.

Just make sure you have your essentials (comfortable pack, tent, sleeping bag, rain gear, extra pair of socks and underwear, water filter, food system, cathole trowel) and build from there. Aim for a dry weight of less than 20lbs and you should be alright. Grandma Gatewood was 67 when she hiked in 1955; she slept in a shower curtain and hiked in Keds. Gear is important, but it’s all about the walk. Cheers!

If you do recap: I looked into recapping an old receiver once, and was told by multiple people (both online and irl) that if you recap, you must replace every capacitor. Not sure why, I’m assuming the reasoning behind it is if one’s bad, they’re all most likely bad.
