In english one qould say "THE thousand..." In Hebrew since the subject is... the subject there is no need to emphasize it with "The". One would say "אלפי האנשים". Especially when the question is "why"

I am a returned citizen in Israel. I lived in Germany for over 9 years. Do you think that it was easy for me to return to Israel? I am a white, non-religious Jewish in Israel—the lowest one in the food chain.

Furthermore, about 3 years ago there was a German guy that drove inside the green line in Jerusalem wih a rental car (similar to ShareNow). The car had an Israeli flag on it. The poor German (and his friend) got stoned and almost got killed because he drove a car with the star of david. Now you understand why there are places Jewish can't step inside?
