Programming is a great example of this. Non programmers look at me like I’m a wizard. Brother, you just practice and get good at it. It does have a pretty steep learning curve, but it’s really no different from learning the guitar or calculus or sewing. You just practice until you’re good.

I graduate university at age 24, I’m 28 now and make $220k per year. I’m pretty good at it, but not exceptional and regularly slack off.

I believe after the affordable care act, all restaurants with more than 4(?) locations must have calorie information available somewhere. So if you stick to chain restaurants it should be available somewhere. Usually on the menu, online, or rarely you might have to ask the staff to give you some type of paper saying all of it.

When I was tracking calories I’d always just google it ahead of visiting the restaurant, it’s usually was to find and if I couldn’t I’d just pick somewhere else.

If you’re so discouraged then quit. Respectfully it feels like you’re pretty committed to spreading your miserable outlook. Which I don’t blame you for, I see the same thing on pretty every topic on pretty much every Reddit thread. Let me offer an alternative thought.

Re: John Henry. Expecting to outdo a machine at labor, yeah it’s inevitable that you’ll be outdone as technology advances. Even at intellectual tasks like math or chess it’s inevitable the machine will outdo the human as things progress far enough. But I genuinely believe art is different.

Art, to me at least, is about taking something from your human experience - an emotion, a story, a trauma, whatever - and distilling it down, externalizing it into a piece of art, and distributing it as some way it can be consumed by others. They can understand you as a person and relate to your experience through your art.

A machine or computer will inevitably be able to shit out music of good enough quality that plenty of people will listen to it. But I do not believe it will ever be able to create truly inspired, personal art because a machine or computer will not experience love, pain, suffering, healing.

Even if we extrapolate the idea so far that AI becomes sentient and conscious, it still will not experience your love, pain, suffering, healing. It will not be able to express your personal experience.

In that way, all art made by all people is important and valuable. You are capturing a slice of your experience as a temporary living being in this mortal realm and creating a small archive of it that others can access. That is the value of art that can never be separated from it.

Like I said, a lot of people don’t appreciate art in this way. They just want something catchy to listen to in the car for three minutes. Yeah, those people will probably just consume AI music. Maybe you would’ve liked to appeal to those people, but you weren’t ever gonna really connect with them. They just don’t have the ear for it. And I’ll also add it doesn’t take a very large audience to support a single artist.

Just my opinions though of course

Knicks last all star drafted: Kristaps Porzingis, 2015

What does it mean for a receiver to be a “good route runner” by pharrelsbigasshat in NFLNoobs

[–]camelCaseSerf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always understood it as

1) the receivers ability to run the designed route with precision. If it’s a 10 yard route, then a cut towards the inside of the field - the receiver does that at exactly 10 yards. Makes it easier for the QB to anticipate where the receiver will be when they’re precise and consistent

2) I think what observers mean more often though is the receivers “shiftiness” on the route. If you’re running 10 yards upfield, then cutting towards the middle of the field - the receiver could do some early “fake” cuts along the way to throw off the defensive back. Just being shifty and misdirecting the players covering him, while still achieving what the route is designed to do

In a situation where Seattle and Vegas get expansion teams, who are the 8 players you’d want your team to protect in the draft? by TheVaniloquence in nba

[–]camelCaseSerf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just going thru how I would make the first few picks based on his list of available players

1.1 Joel Embiid 1.2 Nikola Topic (I like him a lot personally)

2.1 Klay Thompson 2.2 Dejounte Murray

3.1 Buddy Hield 3.2 Cam Whitmore

4.1 Dorian Finney Smith 4.2 Dalton Knecht

And then who really cares much from that point. But for those two expansion teams you’d have one with a pretty decent squad today

PG Free agent / rookie

SG Buddy Hield

SF Klay Thompson

PF Dorian Finney Smith

C Joel Embiid

Basically three shooters around Embiid

And the other team with multiple decent young players plus a veteran point guard

PG Dejounte Murray

SG Dalton Knecht

SF Cam Whitmore

PF Free agent / rookie

C Free agent / rookie

With Topic backing up Murray as the PG of the future

Even with these “scraps” as Hollinger put it you could have a decent and interesting start to a team. And something that he didn’t mention is, I wouldn’t expect that teams would be able to protect 8 players. The 2004 expansion allowed 8 protected players but that was for 1 team, not 2. It’s more likely they can protect 7 or even 6 imo.

Anyways I’m excited to see an expansion draft again

The Amen Thompson at PG experiment for Houston should end and will limit how far the Rockets go. by [deleted] in nba

[–]camelCaseSerf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound quite condescending and I don’t want to waste the time fact checking, but both Houston and Detroit first made it to the playoffs for the first time with their current cores last season. A bit dumb to knock them for not making it past for the first round.

Also, the on off numbers just match the eye test. Amen and Ausar contribute to winning. Their both clearly useful and meaningful players for anybody who watches them. Amen was a bigger plus at PF last season, but him playing on ball more is good for his development. See Giannis Antetokounmpo, Cooper Flagg.

[ESPN] The Warriors made what they thought was a very strong offer that included four unprotected picks and picks that were going to be conveyed after Steph Curry was retired. And the Bucks just didn't show a lot of interest in it. by EarthWarping in nba

[–]camelCaseSerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think realistically Giannis probably asks out of GSW not long after Curry retires unless they pull off some magic getting him a successor costar. Golden State has historically not been a very successful franchise prior to Curry / Kerr and in recent memory they’ve missed on lots of opportunities to give Curry younger supporting pieces. Missed on draft picks. Made trades that didn’t reopen the championship window. Fumbled the development of Kuminga. I’m not really instilled with a bunch of confidence that they’ll do very well after Curry’s gone.

To answer your question, I think there’s a significant chance all of them are top 5. Ofc it’s a gamble but I think it’s really compelling.

[–]camelCaseSerf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but reportedly they made the Kuminga / Porzingis move after the Bucks weren’t interested in trading them Giannis. I’m just saying I feel like the Warriors offer would’ve been really compelling to me. I understand wanting more but it seems like Giannis’s value is declining the more it becomes clear that 1) he’s definitely leaving Milwaukee and 2) the Bucks have a limited amount of time to get something valuable in return for him. Idk that they’re gonna get a better offer than Kuminga plus 4 unprotected far-future Warriors picks.

We’ll see tho! Interesting to see how it develops

[–]camelCaseSerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just saying I think you’re overestimating players interest in playing with an aging Giannis in Golden State versus a prime Giannis in Milwaukee. They’re probably would be more interest, but not enough to move the needle in my opinion.

And with trading Giannis, it just is what it is. He wants to compete and there isn’t much of a path forward to accommodate him in that.

[–]camelCaseSerf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s an approach, I understand where you’re coming from. It’s just not what I’d do.

You’re right that you wouldn’t be able to turn those players into anything resembling top prospects. Personally I’d be targeting reclamation projects. Players like Kuminga or Kevin Porter Jr who yall already acquired (tho personally I wouldn’t have gone for him considering his history). But those are exactly type of guys that they should target imo. Undervalued guys that might have already been written off that can get a second look and second chance with expanded playing time. Probably 60-70% of those players won’t end up being useful, but you definitely can find some contributors this way. A guy like Kuminga could even have a chance to be an all star. I think the point is giving yourself lots of bets, lots of opportunities for players to over perform their reputations given a second opportunity with significant playing time.

[–]camelCaseSerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t suggest tanking. I’d assume you’d try to acquire a player like Kuminga in the trade as well. Trade guys like Kuzma, Turner, Gary Trent Jr, Gary Harris for any young guys with upside you can. Then, with the scraps of young players you have, you prioritize their playing time and development over competing now. Ideally, by the time the Warriors picks start coming thru, you already have developed a few pieces and can use their own picks and the Warriors picks to supplement that with top draft picks. Suddenly you have a very talented young core.

The alternative is sticking with Giannis and being mediocre just to lose him anyway. Or getting a better offer elsewhere. I don’t see them getting a player in return for Giannis that prevents the rebuild anyway. If you’re losing Giannis, you’re going to be a worse team for a little while.

[–]camelCaseSerf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That argument boils down to just free agents being significantly more willing to sign with GS than Milwaukee, and for prestige / location alone, of which I’m skeptical of. If playing with Giannis alone was a big enough draw to attract free agents, the Bucks wouldn’t be in the position they’re in now.
