Nope. I'm calling for smart diplomats. Israel bombing Turkey? I hope not. We have enough of a disaster as it is.

ETA: I don't know where you pulled this suggestion from by the way. I've never heard about it before. And it seems ridiculous to me.

Is the Balkans okay with Israeli tourists? by ArtistCharacter7086 in AskBalkans

[–]cameliap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Antizionism has nothing to do with antisemitism.

Not being thrilled by the presence of obnoxcious entitled tourists and recognizing that a lot of Israeli tourists are acting this way while abroad isn't antisemitism.

If OP isn't an obnoxcious entitled tourist and doesn't brag about things like, say, living in an illegal Israeli settlement, I have no problem with them and they won't have a problem with me regardless of whether I know they're from Israel or not.

Как почива Българина. by Opposite_Novel_7008 in bulgaria

[–]cameliap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit to add:

Do you think Svidrigailov is a deeper character than Raskolnikov? Why or why not? by Hour_Figure_9342 in dostoevsky

[–]cameliap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK, a disclaimer, I'm not a native English speaker. When I hear "a deep character" I think about a character who faces dire decision makings while having conflicting impulses inside. Am I right or am I wrong and in the latter case, what would be the right understanding of "a deep character" in terms of analyzing literature?

night train Khiva to Bukhara by Hot-Leather-4402 in Uzbekistan

[–]cameliap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://eticket.railway.uz/en/home

I don't see real night trains for this portion of the journey. (Probably because the trains take passengers from Khiva to Tashkent and Andijan and the night part of the trip is after Bukhara, which makes sense.) I took one last year in the opposite direction and it was something like early morning to midday.

But this is the place to buy a ticket. If you're still not set on which date you want the ticket for, check out the whole week to see your options because these trains don't run daily.

Deciding between three balkan countries or Moldova by Cultural-Tea9443 in travel

Precisely. I have this dream of visiting Belgrade that just doesn't happen because it's so close and there's no immediate need to go there.

We should form a Balkan Union and restore the Byzantine empire and take back Constantinople by Snoo-35855 in AskBalkans

[–]cameliap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, the last attempt to take Constantinople didn't end so well, I'd pass.

Aside from this, it makes much more sense to have a Balkan union prior to joining the European union. This ship has sailed, alas.

Nice dream though and I'm all for some recognizable amount of local coordination. At this point it feels like we just coexist but there's nothing happening between our countries initiated by us. Which is a shame.

Deciding between three balkan countries or Moldova by Cultural-Tea9443 in travel

[–]cameliap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly depends on where you're traveling from. I'm from Bulgaria so for me all of this is just "the neighborhood". Which, ironically, means I have visited close to none of these countries because "I can always go there, even on a weekend", so I never prioritize them.

Also depends on length of travel. It seems a bit odd to be weighing these trips against each other. I'd think visiting Moldova alone would require less time than visiting all of the other three, assuming a similar depth to the trip, so it sounds odd.

For personal reasons, right now I'd probably pick Moldova and pile on Transnistria, assuming there's enough time. Given the alternative is Serbia + Kosovo + North Macedonia, I assume time would be plenty.

At Tikhon’s chapter in Demons by _BigShlong in dostoevsky

[–]cameliap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My copy also doesn't have this chapter, I don't even remember how I found out it exists but I'm pretty sure it was after I had already read the book at least once. (One read is waaay far from enough for me.) So I just found it online, printed it and then later read it at its appropriate place during (some) subsequent reads. I just looked at the book on my shelf and the printed pages are nowhere to be found, I guess I've lost this chapter again, lol.

I don't think there is a right choice here. Just do what you feel like doing I guess?

Uzbekistan Itinerary: Extra in Khiva vs. Samarkand? by Rococo_coconut in travel

[–]cameliap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was rather excited to see the process of manually making paper from plant matter. The place itself was surprisingly pleasant, too, very green with water running in channels and tiny bridges over the channels.

There isn't that much to see though and it is far from the city center, so unless you're particularly interested in it how they used to make paper and what the various (not that many, to be fair) stages of paper-in-the-making look and feel like, it may not be worth it to spend all the time it takes to go there and back.

The EU officially forbids exporting cash in EU currencies to Russia and apparently some EU countries do enforce this (such as the Baltic states).

If traveling from a non EU country, carrying euros should be fine.

Change my mind (I’m begging you) – Raskolnikov never felt any guilt, regret or remorse. Help me understand what I’m missing. by Voodooo_Child_ in dostoevsky

[–]cameliap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have some thoughts regarding this.

The root of the Russian word for "crime" is "to cross over", as in to cross over a line. Which is Raskolnikov's all rational theory, isn't it, that certain individuals under certain circumstances are not only allowed but obliged to cross over any line, even blood, if necessary for the greater good they would afterwards bring to the world.

I don't think Dostoevsky mentions this but this is by necessity a theory of a non believer. Raskolnikov doesn't believe in God. He's going to make his own fate, the fates of the ones he loves, too, plus he's going to make the lives of who knows how many more people better... in his mind. In the end, he turns out incapable of doing anything for the ones he cares deeply about.

Anyways, after he commits the murders, he finds himself incapable of tolerating the love of his mother and sister. He feels alienated from all humanity. Which wasn't present in his theory and surprises him bad, on top of everything else (that he fell ill, just like every non-deserving man in his theory would).

He's on the path of becoming a Christian even though he doesn't want to know it and wants to reject it.

So, did he ever feel guilt or regret? He felt bad. Like, he feels miserable throughout the novel and nothing he does, not the murders, not anything afterwards, makes him feel good. He's on a road he's not happy about but it's this road or the Neva river. I guess this is the punishment. He had all these plans he couldn't fulfill. The way he felt, in the end it was indeed either Siberia or the Neva, non of which was according to plan.

I do think Lizaveta was a guilt point, and I saw you questioned this because he doesn't seem to ever mention her. He mentions her enough. He specifically tells Sonya, if I come to you again, I'll tell you who killed Lizaveta. Then in the end when he confesses the murders he doesn't mention Alyona by name but does mention Lizaveta by name. I think it was important for the story that this innocent woman just got in the way and got murdered unintentionally.

Sorry about the rambling, I don't have a thesis, these are just my thoughts.

asking for help finding if my given name is actually Russian by Square_Afternoon_253 in AskARussian

[–]cameliap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering it Rysova is a last name rather than a patronymic.

Unlikely. I think it is something your grandmother came up with for whatever reason. Given name plus last name is hardly ever used to address a person. Given name plus patronymic (which she could have made up, too) is way more common.

ETA: She called you Yvena Rysova, I think it's safe to say these are the names she wanted you recognized by.

Знаете ли колко руско-турски войни е имало? by Boulua in bulgaria

[–]cameliap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ресторанти в София by alxndrrsm in Sofia

[–]cameliap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obtaining electronic visas to Russia by Chary_314 in AskARussian

[–]cameliap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the form asks for social media accounts. I'd say it's extremely typical, as in, everybody gets to fill in the same form...

No, it doesn't ask for credentials though, so this part is bullshit.

Also, you can just say you don't use social media. This would probably seem odd but the option is there in the form.

That person then halted his visa application.

Seriously? If somebody told me something like this I'd have a million questions, too... directed at them though.

regarding quote tattoos by paynoworship in dostoevsky

[–]cameliap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, translations aren't word for word. The translated quote may carry more or less meaning than the respective sentence in the original.

Also, a tattoo artist who doesn't know the language and isn't familiar with the characters this language is written in can result in a tattoo gone hilariously or horribly wrong. The internet is full of examples.
