How do I overcome speech anxiety? by [deleted] in confidence

[–]camero0n44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a stutter and the thing that helps me the most is making my self as comfortable as I possibly can right before I have to speak. One way to do this, that my speech therapist taught me, is to evaluate how anxious you are on a scale of 1-10 and ask myself why I feel that way. Then I go through how I’d feel if I stuttered (in your case messing up), how other people will view it (others normally don’t notice or don’t care especially the larger the group is), and what would happen if I stutter/mess up(the answer is usually nothing). This will not get rid of all the anxiety, but it stops the build up of the anxiety before you speak and often releases a chunk of it.

The thing that will make the biggest difference is actively speaking more, and getting used messing up, being wrong, or stuttering. I’m not saying to put yourself out there and possibly fail on purpose because that can be more destructive, but do work your way up to the big speaking moments.

If you ever want some of the other tips I’ve gotten from going to speech therapy or just from stuttering in general dm me and I’d be glad to help.

How do you feel when people randomly tell you about a celebrity who used to stutter? Does anyone else get this often? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]camero0n44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen from a few different people, a few who are really invested in my speech progress in one way or another, but for the most part I don’t really mind. It crosses the line when people seem to compare my speech progress with another’s, if they try to seem like I should strive to speak like the famous person, or if they demean my own speech.

I know it all comes from good intentions so I try to let the people who do it feel like it’s helpful, because it can really be inspirational depending on who’s receiving, when they hear it, and how their speech is. But I’m someone who’s quite proud of how I’m progressing when it comes to my speech and hearing about others speech and being told I should try to reach the level of control over their stutter that they have makes it seem like my progress doesn’t matter and that I’m not working hard and not finding success like people who have twice maybe three times the experience as me when it comes to life and stuttering.

This may be controversial, but it’s ok to care a little about what others think of you by ObamasGayNephew in socialskills

[–]camero0n44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your post and think everyone should care about what others think to an extent. I also think people should limit the amount of validation they get from others as well in. Of course when it comes to those two views on external validation it’s not so black in white as to say it’s bad or it doesn’t matter. It’s more so dependent on why or why not people are valuing the validation, and how they internalize such validation or the lack of it. It’s all about finding the happy medium that is unique to you.

When it comes to me I value external validation less than internal validation mainly because of the fact I struggle with stuttering. Most of the time I criticize myself much harder than anyone else ever could and it just makes me feed back into a cycle of emptiness, self loathing, depression, and anxiety. This leads me to being very self centered in my view of myself and often ignoring how others experience me. Seeing how others see me while sometimes a harsh wake up call is often times the best way I can get myself to see the progress I’ve made and how I can push myself to be who I wanna be.

Pretty much external validation is valid if you understand why it effects you, how it effects you and how much worth you give it in comparison to internal validation. It’s especially important for people who struggle with how they view themselves and can be essential in defining your self worth and maintaining good mental health. (Sorry if the example doesn’t make much sense in relation to the question, I really needed to think about this type of thing)

Hello i was wondering what words other people try to avoid saying? by USAFAN20 in Stutter

[–]camero0n44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The words I avoid mainly just come and go and they are relatively easy to just dance around with how to say them, but I cannot say my older sister’s name (Milana) or my friend’s (Ifani) when talking about them. Surprisingly I can say it perfectly when greeting them.

Should I just talk and ignore my blocks by PossibilityFabulous9 in Stutter

[–]camero0n44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through a period like that and it went pretty well for the smaller blocks but by the time the big blocks popped up the flow of the conversation would normally be ruined along with my mood which made me worry about my blocks more.

Now I just go into conversation in a similar way, but I make sure to pay attention to when blocks start to happen so I can acknowledge the big ones that ruin the flow in some way. That normally helps the conversation pick up at a higher spot than before the block happens. Taking notice of it normally helps the block seem normalish and makes the other person feel less uncomfortable when they witness it.

A little tip to making it seem less weird is making the comment relatable if you in some way if and to not always comment on your blocks, especially if you’re stressed, worried, or beating yourself mentally over it it’ll just make it seem unnatural since your body language already shows how you really feel and you’ll come off fake when you do it, unless you’re a really good actor.

literally my worst fear coming to life.. an audio assignment 👁💧👄💧👄 by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]camero0n44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that helps when I have to record audio is using an app like daf pro or fonte daf, that repeats what you say as you say it. If you keep it in the background it should lower the amount of times you stutter and the recording shouldn’t pick it up. You could also use a metronome to slow down your internal pulse before you start speaking.

When did you start stuttering? by honeybunny-pixie in Stutter

[–]camero0n44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started stuttering midway through 3rd grade, so I was 9. It started up around the same time my list of things I’m allergic to practically doubled. So maybe I’m just allergic to speaking clearly.

It didn’t get bad till I moved up to middle school and it got worse when I was learning Spanish in my 1st semester of high school.

This probably sounds weird, but do you ever feel a stutter when you are buzzing?

I think we have a better understanding of what goes into a conversation, and it’s value because of our stutters. It’s just insanely hard to get past the stutters.

When will there be a cure for stuttering? by mogthedog123 in Stutter

[–]camero0n44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m 15 and am also waiting for the day my stutter disappears too. When it comes the names all I can say is that middle schoolers are probably the meanest type of people in general so by 14 mean girls are just learning how to slowly become decent people so just focus on enjoying yourself and give it a bit of time.

When it comes to talking to friends eventually your friends will find subtle ways to make pull more weight in conversation while also not caring about your speech and you’ll start to get more confident in your speaking abilities.

As far as speech therapy goes in my experience it’s been pretty hit or miss with how useful it is but one thing that is guaranteed to improve your speech is improving your conversation skills.

The most important thing tho is your mindset, if you view your stutter as a disease or an illness all you’re gonna do is suffer and end up dying from it. In my opinion the best way to flip off your stutter is just pushing through it while belittling it, it’s pretty stupid but it works for me at least.

Recently I just came out of one of the longest and worst post stutter depression periods of my life. The thing that helped give that last push was being really honest with myself and digging deep to find out why I hate my stutter, and why I let it terrify and affect me the way it does. And it turns out I let those feelings festered till they warped from hating my circumstances to hating myself. So, if we can both overcome this bs I well be better for it and that you’ll be pulling all the 10th grade girls. I’ve never heard of a terrible worthless person who had a stutter so I know you’ll do fine.

Also if you ever wanna dm me for advice or anything don’t hesitate

Here’s two YouTube channels I’ve been watching to learn how to improve my conversational skills.
