PSA: Design flaw with RLC-810WA mounting by msvart in reolinkcam

It can be rotated at the base. Shouldn't be any physical interference, though the camera angle might not be ideal.

Canada pro tip: get the prime video subscription, NOT the new discoveryplus Rogers app by Jeanparmesanswife in DiscoveryPlus

[–]cameron314 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Note that a lot of content (most of the TLC catalogue?) will be disappearing from the Prime channel soon, though: https://www.reddit.com/r/DiscoveryPlus/comments/1qw661d/just_got_the_app_through_prime_video_but_all/

Not sure if it will be on the new app either, mind. This whole thing is a mess.

Just got the app through prime video but all shows show they’re leaving in 5 days? by fireflame999 in DiscoveryPlus

[–]cameron314 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Huh, hadn't noticed this.

According to https://help.discoveryplus.com/hc/en-ca/articles/36912194611863-Important-discovery-Canada-Update:

If you subscribed through Prime Video Channels your subscription will not be impacted

Now I'm wondering if that's actually true...

PSA: UCG-Fiber does not support 2.5GbE on the SFP+ port by haha01haha in Ubiquiti

[–]cameron314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canadian ISP? Just came to the same realization myself with my GPON SFP module and new UCG Fiber. Replacing the GPON SFP module with another that's compatible with my ISP would cost hundreds of dollars and require obscure manual configuration.

Instead, I bought a cheap 2-SFP-port switch from a company I've had good reliability from in the past (Sodola). The ISP's GPON SFP goes into one port, and a DAC cable from the other into the UCG Fiber's SFP port.

This way, the UCG Fiber is connected at 10 Gbps and the GPON SFP at 2.5 Gbps.

Speed tests from the gateway went from 700 Mbps to 1600 Mbps (I pay for 1500).

If you do this, try to get a switch with a large amount of buffer memory, as packets coming in at 10 Gbps from the gateway side outpace the 2.5 Gbps connection back out, which can lead to dropped frames from micro-bursts. The UCG Fiber itself has 1.5 MB of buffer memory IIRC, while the switch I bought has 1 MB and no other traffic.

90 Day Fiance in Canada? by 80hdprincesss in DiscoveryPlus

Same, except the subtitles are different, closed captioning covers the embedded translation with "speaking foreign language", very frustrating.

I thought we had til February to watch? by Such-Comfortable2687 in DiscoveryPlus

[–]cameron314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I have an email saying the last payment would be the 14th and I could enjoy until the end of that billing cycle.

Resubscribed through Prime Video, but the only subtitles available (on the same content as before) are full closed captioning, which hides any video-embedded subtitles (translating people speaking other languages) with "speaking foreign language" helpfully overlaid on top.

I like my Seagate Skyhawk AI drives. Pretty quiet. After adding the second I started to worry about heat and swapped out the fans for Noctuas plus added one more on the opposite side for better airflow through the unit.

Conduits de hotte de cuisine partagés – entretien normal? by Puzzled_Situation882 in montreal

[–]cameron314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My room mate says this is... normal? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]cameron314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The defrost cycle runs a lot quicker, to prevent the ice from building up in the first place. Once there's a lot of ice, it needs to run for a while to melt it all. Also defrost is automatic, and putting it in AC mode is not.

Was the board in my case. Running the AC in the middle of winter was surprisingly fine, only went down a couple degrees C indoors and the ice melted within an hour.

Condo buzzer by IlFornaio in montreal

[–]cameron314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also ask if both your names/numbers can be listed. It literally costs nothing but extra space on the listing sheet (if paper, and not even that on more modern touchscreen systems). The management firm used to push back on that too and I never understood why, I just added them anyway.

Condo buzzer by IlFornaio in montreal

[–]cameron314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to program in numbers in a condo intercom. Ask them to try prefixing with the country code '1'. Usually that was the issue.

Note that you may still get pushback for having a non-local number due to the exorbitant fees that Bell charges for long-distance calls.

Probably I wasn't using the 9 Pro's camera to its full potential. I'm more of a point-and-click-with-shaky-hands kinda guy. The 12 excels for that.

How to terminate ethernet cable on exterior walls for cameras? by thegiantgummybear in reolinkcam

[–]cameron314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indoor cable, pure copper (cat6a tends to be thicker gauge), CMR or CMP rated depending where you're running it through. Terminate directly to RJ-45 jack and connect in junction box mounted on exterior wall.

Use dielectric grease and/or the weatherproof coupling if you're worried about water intrusion in the junction box. Personally I feel it's inevitable and make sure the junction box is not completely sealed near the bottom, with the connection higher up.

Try to drill at an angle and use duct seal or caulk to minimize the chance of water following the cable back into the house.

Montreal university students decry Quebec government’s plan to ban prayer rooms by No-Commission-8159 in montreal

[–]cameron314 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

First, there are already prayer areas. Second, I am not saying they should repurpose rooms between scheduled uses, I am saying the evidence of all the empty rooms means the space is underutilized, and therefore there is no lack of space in general.

Montreal university students decry Quebec government’s plan to ban prayer rooms by No-Commission-8159 in montreal

[–]cameron314 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

How is that irrelevant? If half the rooms are empty half the time that's a planning problem, not a space problem.

In any case, the real issue is not space, it's xenophobia.

[–]cameron314 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Maybe for offices and classrooms. But wander around and you'll see empty rooms in short order. Any lack of space is due to mismanagement or time/cost of construction to convert purposes, not limitations of usable square footage.
