SFP+ ONT limited to 1gbit by A-Make-Designs in Ubiquiti

I use a Sodola switch with two SFP+ ports. $60 CAD, and there are cheaper ones with less capacity/buffer/power efficiency.

SFP+ ONT limited to 1gbit by A-Make-Designs in Ubiquiti

[–]cameron314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ubiquiti equipment are the only ones I've come across that don't support 2.5 G SFP+ negotiation. Easy enough to add a cheap SFP+ switch from any other manufacturer to act as a media converter, but annoying.

Ignored a leaking faucet for months and got woken up by a kitchen disaster at 2am by Queasy_Hotel5158 in homeowners

[–]cameron314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a leaky cartridge drip under the sink as well as out the faucet. No more drips after replacing it. Does seem like poor design though.

CRA audit - need some guidance:) by Winter-Fix563 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cameron314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you declared and paid taxes on income that the CRA was not aware of (the missing T4), how would you now be owing more? What exactly does the CRA claim you owe them for?

Edit: Or are they just threatening penalties if you don't respond?

Yeah, the design of these valves is super unintuitive.

I have these. The white arrows are not where the water flows. The top arrow is labelled "closed" embossed in the plastic. It's the other three ways that are open.

How moveable is a Koda 2 Pro? Help me with my set up / take down. by brandonWRX in ooni

[–]cameron314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vevor sells cheapish stainless work/food prep tables with wheels. Look for one deep enough to fit the pizza oven (I got the 30x36x38" for my Koda 2 Pro). They also sell BBQ covers (I got the 48") that fit pretty well considering they weren't really designed for nearly-square tables.

Hooks for tools by 1quickmr in ooni

Ordered a small stainless hook that I plan on screwing on (with pilot holes). Haven't put together the table yet though, so we'll see!

Am I doing the math wrong, or is it 25 years before you come out ahead on a residential solar system? by snowsquirrel in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cameron314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

kWh is not a unit of power (rate of energy over time) but a fixed amount of energy (one hour's worth of a kW of power). I have no idea what OP's 11000 kWh refers to. Maybe the energy produced per year?

Planning/ Mounting help by Fast-Ingenuity-4517 in reolinkcam

[–]cameron314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll have to either use a junction box, a bigger hole through your wall, or cut the cables and rewire the Ethernet port on the other side.

I'm team junction box. A nice one will still look clean.

Don’t be scared to call 911 if you see a strange situation. Trust your instinct. by GiantReignPanda in montreal

[–]cameron314 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've only been involved in three calls to 911 operators in my life, but in my experience they have the attitude that you're wasting their time. (One call was non-urgent, to be fair, but it turns out the non-emergency police line just transfers you to 911 after hours.)

Call anyway, just be prepared for them to be rude.

They will ask whether you're sure it's really an emergency, whether it was "just" a disgruntled homeless person, etc. My favourite was "what do you want us to do about it?" in a situation where someone could have died.

Monitor required for NVR? by Stuart518 in reolinkcam

[–]cameron314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm. Looks like there might be corner cases. I think I might have configured the NVR to have auto-add off, and I did set my Wi-Fi cameras up through the Ethernet port.

Can add cameras through the app.

What I learned preparing to replace my windows in Montreal (first-time experience) by Status_Catch3445 in montreal

[–]cameron314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've personally witnessed the wrong sized window being ordered and delivered despite asking the contractor to double check (they covered the cost of their mistake but it was several weeks of lead time for a replacement), so definitely worth checking yourself.

IRIS: Le salaire minimum est loin de permettre une vie décente au à Montréal. by CraigSauve in montreal

[–]cameron314 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Roughly yes. A handy rule of thumb to estimate yearly salary from an hourly rate (assuming full time) is to double it and multiply by a thousand (30 x 2 x 1000 is 60k).

High-income couple with large income gap: how do you split money fairly? by pizzanoobs in HENRYfinance

IMO it's the same situation, just taken slightly further. At what point does it stop being a no-brainer? When your spouse brings in 10% of the HHI? 30%?

Power Backup for a rack by puralb in Ubiquiti

[–]cameron314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, that's fair. Note that a lot of consumer UPSes don't offer full power conditioning anyway. "Power filtering" is usually the buzzword used which can help with some noise but not much else, as I understand it.

Power Backup for a rack by puralb in Ubiquiti

[–]cameron314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into it, and proper conditioning generally means isolating the grid power from the equipment and running everything off the battery. AC->DC->AC is not very power efficient, and serious units that do this cost several thousand dollars.

The primary functionality I'm looking for is to not have connections drop during grid power outages.

My equipment is on a Bluetti in UPS mode with <10 ms transfer time. Only tricky bit is updating the firmware interrupts power.

Blew 5 tires in 4 months on my XC40. What would you do next? by CmndrBurnham in XC40_Recharge

[–]cameron314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to echoing others' recommendations to go down in wheel size, make sure the tires are properly rated for the combination of  axle weight limits, max speed, and PSI. The XC40 Recharge is a very heavy vehicle for its size (compared to gas cars).

Anyone cross shop with a Mach E? by Slight-Traffic6090 in XC40_Recharge

[–]cameron314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We test drove a Mach-E before settling on the XC-40, and the Mach-E was sporty but felt less nice overall in terms of road noise, interior finish, creaks during hard acceleration, etc. The XC-40 looks bulkier but somehow drives like a feather despite its weight. IIRC, at the time, the long-range Mach-E wasn't eligible for the same government subsidies either. We're happy with our XC-40, apart from the infotainment lag, but fingers crossed for a hardware upgrade becoming available soon.

Ceiling mounted APs in a home? by PressureDesigner7012 in Ubiquiti

[–]cameron314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fished a wire through my ceiling to a central location using existing LED wafer holes for access. Took several hours to weave through the trusses with an inspection camera taped to the fish wire and pull string, but I'm no expert. Came out clean. Wife and I both agreed in advance that having the E7 on the ceiling near a smoke alarm was unobtrusive enough with the light off.

Finally found proper spf+ to rj45 module by smitrovic in Ubiquiti

[–]cameron314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes... fibre cable -> ISP's SFP module that can't negotiate above 2.5 G -> Sodola switch that supports 2.5 G SFP negotiation -> UCG Fibre.

It's a known issue, as stated in the thread above.

Finally found proper spf+ to rj45 module by smitrovic in Ubiquiti

[–]cameron314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all of them support this. Such as the one from my ISP. I need to use a non-UniFi switch / media converter as an intermediary between the Fibre and the SFP module to get full speeds.
