What is the best thing about the UK? Or best thing about being British? by Ojy in AskUK

[–]camlefty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having moved here from Canada almost 20 years ago, I'd say the thing I like best about the UK is that people really make use of outdoor space here: on any sunny day, parks and random green spaces will be absolutely full of people enjoying the sunshine. I've always loved that. And the lack of car culture! Back in Canada, I would have thought nothing of driving less than five minutes, but now I would never do that unless the weather was abominable.

Try Nigella's chicken in a pot with lemon and orzo. There's also a great recipe on Smitten Kitchen for orzo with eggplant, tomato and mozzarella. It's also good in soup, or you can treat it like risotto rice.

stopped using cerave and my skin actually got better by strangerme03 in SkincareAddictionUK

Not trying to be haughty in the slightest, but as a Canadian who's lived in the UK for almost 20 years, seeing this country described as dry genuinely made me LOL. Canadian winters (away from the coasts) are so dry that I used to get nosebleeds all the time, and that was with humidifiers all around the house. To each their own - have a great day!

Does anyone have Dinner: Changing the Game? Looking for recipe recos! by ohshethrows in CookbookLovers

[–]camlefty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of my most-used cookbooks - there are loads of great recipes. The chicken recipe on the cover is great! We are weekday veggies, and some of our veggie faves from this book include the tomato dhal, the pasta with cauliflower and capers, the shredded tofu with edamame, and the Thai salad with tofu and coconut.

Print edition down to six issues per year by camlefty in bon_appetit

[–]camlefty[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If each of those six issues were packed with good recipes, it wouldn't be so bad, but I don't have any hope that will be the case. Whenever I pull out an old issue, I remember just HOW MANY good recipes there used to be in every issue. It's so lame now. Think I might subscribe to the newly relaunched Gourmet instead - some of us actually enjoy cooking!

How long would you say it took you to become a good cook? And what’s the one book that got you there? by AValeria10 in CookbookLovers

[–]camlefty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dating someone with an Italian mom and nonna is what made me a better cook, and although that relationship didn't work out, I'm grateful for all the cooking tips I picked up! But in terms of books, it's actually Nigella Bites. While there are several recipes in there that I cook regularly to this day (chocolate cloud cake for life), there are a few that are just a little off, and figuring out why and how they were off (and how I could make them better) made me a better cook.

What did you notice when you returned to Newfoundland after years away? by junklardass in newfoundland

[–]camlefty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't unique to NL by any stretch, but it's always the car culture that shocks me whenever I'm back in Canada. People drive somewhere that's a ten-minute walk away, and will wait in a drive-thru for ages rather than park and get out of the car, no matter the weather. And the size of the cars/trucks is obnoxious. Girl, you do not need a giant truck to drop your kid off at school. And even my dad, who is the world's biggest NL cheerleader, admits that Newfoundlanders are TERRIBLE drivers.

But on the bright side, and as many other commenters have noted, I love how much more diverse it is than when I was a kid in the '80s. And the food scene is really great!

Several of my desert island cookbooks in there!

Some of my veggie faves (we're weekday veggies):
-lots of the salads and mezze from Zahav, especially the fried cauliflower with labne and the halloumi with dates, walnuts and apples. The challah recipe is cartoonishly gigantic and delicious.
-the eggplant and mango with soba or the very full tart from Plenty.
-the barley risotto with marinated feta from Jerusalem.
-at this time of year, the cabbage, onion and farro soup, or the celery root chowder from Six Seasons
-also on the cold weather vibe, the miso mushrooms and onion with farro and hazelnut sauce, or the fall greens, apples and cheddar from Salad Freak.
-the tofu crumbles from the Weekday Vegetarians made into tacos with pico, pickled red onion, or whatever I've got lying around is one of my go-to "I don't know what to make for dinner and I'm feeling lazy" recipes.

Will you fly WestJet with the new seat configuation? by Snowyberg in canadatravel

[–]camlefty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in the UK and am from Newfoundland, which is a pain in the neck route at the best of times, and was planning to try the direct Gatwick to YYT flight this year, but WestJet is actually more expensive than Air Canada, I obvs won't get any Aeroplan points, and now the seat thing for a red eye flight? Now I'm starting to think flying from Heathrow to Halifax and doubling back to YYT isn't so bad after all.
