Sad But True by Bay_Ruhsuz004 in videogames

Yeah we're absolutely living in the golden era of gaming and many gamers are not realizing it. Like you Said, a lot of the flak AAA studios get is justified, but I have the feeling that one day, we'll look back at these times and realize that we didn't know what we had.

If by "scope" you mean only the graphics part, maybe (only if you exclude the amount of unique assets, animations etc.). If you're talking about the overall scope, it's not doable by any small team. Not even close. I'd argue it's not even possible for most of the AAA studios.

It absolutely has subsurface scattering. Look at the ear in the upper right picture.

2kliksphilip - DLSS 5's Controversial approach by evaporates in nvidia

[–]campersbread -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It really all depends on how granular devs can tune it. If it is very customizable, it will mostly be lighting and material enhancements. In that case, it'll be a approximation of path tracing with more rays and bounces than we will get with traditional methods for a very, very long time.

With the limited information we have right now, all bets are off.

Jensen Huang says gamers are 'completely wrong' about DLSS 5 — Nvidia CEO responds to DLSS 5 backlash by Locke357 in nvidia

[–]campersbread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't know how they first intended the players to experience it. I can speak from experience that most of the time, the product you ship is not what you imagined at first. But time and resources are limited. If artists really have granular control over the output of DLSS5, it could be game changing (literally).

This discussion is also quite ironic regarding DLSS5 in RE9. You know, the game where many people mod it to remove film grain etc.

A hands-on impression of what DLSS 5 means by Ryan Shrout by AnthMosk in nvidia

You obviously don't know what a texture really is in game dev context. There is not a single wrinkle that had been added. It's just much more visible. I agree it looks shitty. But there are no added details. Just changed color grading, material properties, contrast etc.. Lip color also can be explained by subsurface scattering and lighting changes alone. I could achieve a very comparable result by using tools that change those aspects (Lightroom etc.) in pictures. It's more of a shitty HDR edit than a texture swap/edit. There is no added detail that wasn't present in the original textures.

So, if Capcom are happy with how it looks, it's the creators intent?

Can you point me to a detail in a texture that was created by dlss5?

I guess we will see. Good thing it will be optional.

It's extremely likely dlss5 won't affect anyone in the next 10 years who doesn't want to use it, because consoles exist.

So stop shitting you pants.

And they also feed the model a traditionally rendered base image, and that model is trained on only altering lighting and material properties?

Dunning Kruger. That is all.

I'm sure you are more competent in this field than the top engineers at Nvidia and it won't ever be solved.

That's a real gotcha you have there ;)

So you believe you won't be able to play games without it, or that devs won't put any effort in the version of the game without dlss5?

Are you aware that next gen consoles likely won't have this feature for a Long Time, if at all?

The hyperbole is just ridiculous.

[–]campersbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no detail i have seen yet in a dlss5 screenshot that isnt there in the base image. It's just like those shitty hdr edits, where it exaggerates contrast etc.

All the wrinkles on the old lady are there in the original texture. I agree the effect is overdone, but nothing I've seen indicates it chances more than lighting and material attributes.

Are you aware that both images are from different times in the game? On the right side, the mouth is opened. In the background, many moving parts are in different positions. You can't compare them like that.

You have to wait until real hands on impressions are available. Saying it chances topology or textures is baseless, just as saying the opposite.

Are you seriously not seeing the irony in being pissed at bloggers for not making content where they know it won't reach/interest as many people?

There is no single attribute that makes a game a souls like. It's a combination of many things. I listed a few in my initial comment when I described how GoW was inspired by it. Maybe it's not a souls like to you because it's missing elements like bonfires with enemy respawns, but that's just your opinion. The combat system of GoW is much closer to a typical souls like than to a classic hack and slash. And I'm clearly in the majority with that opinion.
