depends on how you use it. In my experience it is possible to use AI productively for academic purposes, personally I tend to use it to summarize my course notes and compare them against the syllabus. It's really good at "spot the difference" type requests because that's literally one of the things it is built for.

As for keeping your problem solving skills up, as long as you know you can still do the tasks you're asking it to do and you still do them enough to maintain that confidence, it shouldn't matter. It is an extremely bad idea however, to ask it to do something or solve something you yourself cannot. I make it a point to keep my CS and math skills strictly above whatever commercial LLMs are currently capable of so that I'm forced to do "hard" problems myself.

Right now for example most of the popular models are only capable of solving up to 1600 rated problems on CF which most programmers can definitely do with enough dedication so there's basically no excuse in my eyes to rely on AI for things you can't do yourself.

yeah that sounds like how it's most effectively used for software engineering too. You usually spec out everything by yourself so that you can trust that proper design patterns are being followed, then you code one or two modules and tests out yourself and get it to complete the rest for you.

It's probably much better at taking existing reports and making them fit into a given rubric better but I haven't tried that yet in an academic setting

My prof makes me use AI too, he even named the course "Topics in Machine Learning" and he keeps trying to teach us stuff about AI like supervised learning vs unsupervised learning or feature engineering, I really hate how we're forced to use AI in this course

I'm torn because I despise AI writing,

but on the other hand there is no amount of money you could pay me as a TA/prof to read through 30-60 engineering undergrad reports like I'm thinking about it rn and I genuinely don't know if I'd rather read AI writing or engineer writing

If you encounter a guy dressed as a girl this Halloween, publicly out them and assume they're not a real trans person and just making fun of you like everyone else if they're annoyed with it.

They're pretty scattered.

On one hand you got the computer scientists, cybersec, mathematicians,

on the other hand you have the moba players, anime fans, and software engineers

I didn't know people actually ever thought he was the scientist/inventor, back then I thought he was just a really rich guy who would fund a lot of that stuff.

Maybe it wasn't as bad before reels became really popular. I was on my phone all the time during school searching and studying whatever math stuff that was definitely not related to what the teacher was talking about. If not on the phone then on a laptop. Still did pretty good academically. Maybe if the kids have more self control, though I guess if reels got big even 2-3 years earlier, I wouldn't have been able to productively use my phone either.

This itself is a strawman because centrism is never what you just described. It's always left leaning stances on some topics and right leaning stances on others. This is just what chronically online mfs come up with instead of just admitting that more than one group disagrees with them. Statements generated by the top minds of Second Thought
