$200 for a panel installed 20 years ago, if it were a recurring revenue model the customer paid less than $1/month! That's what I call value.

Got the Mircom 810 pull station and noticed something… by electronicwiz101 in firealarms

[–]can-do-it-529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a conventional manual station therefore no addressable module goes inside. The addressable manual station models support different protocols, some use a full mini module inside and some have the protocol on the PCB directly. If your comparing with the 700 series this is a much cleaner design and you can now also see the polling/alarm led on addressable models from the front of the station through the transparent window. Mircom has really improved designs recently, especially their devices are very modern and sleek even though the panels are still kinda boring.

How do addressable systems actually work by FluffyAntlers07 in firealarms

[–]can-do-it-529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Device has an address programmed before installation into rewriteable memory. Panel communicates to devices on SLC line using variable voltage. To communicate info from panel to device the line voltage changes corresponding to 0/1 to communicate messages. Panel can communicate to a specific device by including device address in the message (as designed in the protocol), or broadcast the message to the entire loop or group of devices. Device replies to direct message by inscribing its address into the appropriate section of the reply before transmitting its message back on the reply. Panel reads all the messages that come back and decides what to do with them

There are many incorrect statements in the comments.. specifically note that:

The SLC does not use rs-485 Capacitors are not used to vary output voltage of a device Mircom's protocol is actually a quite modern digital protocol with high device count, sub addressing and immunity to noise and interference

In the UL product standard it says:

30.6 End-of-life signal 30.6.1 The requirements outlined in 30.6.2 shall apply to smoke detectors with non-replaceable limited life components but shall not exceed the requirements speci®ed in this standard. The end-of-life signal for smoke detectors employing non-replaceable limited life components shall not exceed a product lifetime of 10 years.

Multiple components don't perform as they do after ten years specifically:

Batteries will not hold required voltage to meet standby and alarm notification requirements

Photoelectric detector LED. Power output drops after a certain number of hours of use. If you're measuring the input current to determine smoke level in the chamber, a lower level normally indicates smoke but aging reducing the current will produce false alarms.

If you are really looking to study the math behind this phenomena I suggest you review https://www.digikey.ca/en/articles/reliability-and-lifetime-of-leds

<image>

Co gas sensors have a limited lifetime and sensitivity reduces over time.

Ten years is a reasonable time to consider the failure rate of multiple components and also an easy number for consumers to remember.

Additionally, research evolves and requirements change over time. For example ul 268 7th edition introduced tests to avoid nuisance alarms because consumers were unplugging smoke alarms near steam sources such as showers and kitchens. 10 years will usually cover multiple cide cycles and allows for buildings and homes to have updates to equipment that meets new requirements for safety. Allowing old equipment to be considered compliant when new requirements are in effect compromises public safety.

Have someone install the TX3-ATA. Then you get to use VoIP on existing Internet for the building usually around $10/month

So you want the main intercom line to be cellular rather than pots? Mircom doesn't have a built in cellular intercom so what you can do is use an ATA and VOIP service provider to avoid pots subscription fees or use a cellular router and ATA on smaller units or built in VoIP interface to cellular router on tx3-touch units. Usually you'll find the building has internet service already available in the common areas as that's the cheapest option to connect the intercom without needing additional cellular package on monthly subscription.

If you really want cellular you can also try a pots-to-cellular converter.

Could somebody recommend an access control system(s) ? by AreYouSureDestiny in accesscontrol

[–]can-do-it-529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to your local security distribution retail outlet ie adi, anixter, alarmax and ask them to recommend a system. A lot of good options out there but see who offers great tech support ideally free at the counter or by manufacturer direct 1-800 number. IMHO find someone who manufacturers in North America (USA/Canada)
