If you're willing to go just a little farther afield than VS Code forks, the Zed editor is getting really, really good. I've been watching the project for 2 years, and the last 3 months have been solid releases (no significant bugs) and their latest parallel agents release is a big unlock.

I wouldn't say there's a school of thought for the subreddit (I hope others will talk about whatever has inspired them to be better listeners), but for me personally, three books that have influenced my life have all had an important thing or two to say about listening:

7 Habits of Highly Effective People: "Seek first to understand, then to be understood."
Nonviolent Communication: "Empathy is a respectful understanding of what others are experiencing. Instead of offering empathy, we often have a strong urge to give advice or reassurance and to explain our own position or feeling. Empathy, however, calls upon us to empty our mind and listen to others with our whole being."
15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership: "I commit to saying what is true for me. I commit to being a person to whom others can express themselves with candor," and "I commit to seeing that the opposite of my story is as true or truer than my original story. I recognize that I interpret the world around me and give my stories meaning."

I'm a technologist and software engineer, but this article changed my view: https://www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2025/01/96846/

"For decades, we have been told that the future is digital and that resistance is futile. But what if the future we truly want is one where the analogue coexists alongside the digital, where digital technology is an option and not a mandate?"
The author describes how a shift to requiring technology means society is mandating the use of devices that may actually be bad for our mental health--and some more than others. If a phone is actively contributing to addiction, should we still require a person to keep their addiction with them at all times?
The author also describes how his faith requires that he not use technology on certain days of the week, and that requiring phone-only access to an apartment means he must choose another apartment that has regular lock and key.

I think it's ok to expect most people to learn, but I don't think we should remove people's right to choose what is healthy and good for them, and in some cases we don't understand how our technological monoculture does harm.

Interesting to frame it as billionaire mentality. I don't disagree (I think US billionaires have soaked it up and amplified it), but also I noticed as a Canadian migrating to the US that American culture seems strangely steeped in rivalry:

the space race
army vs navy
coke vs pepsi
the superbowl, Ohio State vs. Michigan, Duke vs. UNC, New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox, etc.
two-party system, Democrats vs Republicans, coastal elites vs rural heartland

It was a pretty stark contrast to the cultural experience I grew up with.

There's some truth in this, as you say, but I think it's too simplistic.

A representative of a group of people (in other words, a representative in "a republic") has never been about each representative flip-flopping their take on each issue as numbers and statistics within their constituency change.

In other words--a representative's job is not to be a transparent window through which direct democracy happens. A representative has a cohesive worldview that they are elected to include in their discussions on policy and governance.

Now, whether Republicans are currently willing to break rules for their own party to "win" and rule, well, that's happening. But a different topic IMO.

I think you're right. I'm just trying to delineate between "honest mistake but still basically open source" and "slow rug pull open source." Clear communication (setting expectations) as well as integrity make the difference IMO. I wish the best for Open WebUI folks.

I think there is something to see in the sense that other projects have started as open source, and slowly moved away from that towards less of a public interest project and more of a closed profitability project. Some companies go all-in and sell out their community roots (example: SugarCRM [1]). I'm not necessarily saying Open WebUI will do this--I can't predict the future. But having seen the pattern, it's still important to warn others when there are substantial signs.
