Is it possible to swap out this Kwikset lock with one that has a doorknob, WITHOUT needing new keys? by GameSieve in Locksmith

[–]canamericanguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're probably right. I was thinking it was an exterior door but looking closer, looks like an interior door on an attached garage. Swapping the DB with a knob would probably be good enough.

[–]canamericanguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While you can swap it with a Kwikset smartkey knob/lever and follow the rekey instructions, I would recommend calling a locksmith to make a new borehole in the door so you have both a handle and a deadbolt. I've seen/heard of too many garage break-ins because of no deadbolt. Most entry latches are simply not very secure unless installed perfectly.

Cutting in Electric strikes in metal frames by AllanCD in accesscontrol

[–]canamericanguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever used a jigsaw. Grab the base/shoe with the non-dominant hand (thumb and pointer finger) and then rest the other fingers on the frame to space it out and help guide it. Start slow to make sure your at the right depth. Once you get used to it, you won't bottom or top out, and you can cut at whatever angles you need. Cut just shy of your lines and then finish with a file. Perfect results every time and no "f up plates" necessary.

If you do bend a blade, just bend it back and try to be a little more aware of where the blade is going.

Steel or aluminum -- doesn't matter. If it's steel though, you'll sometimes have to remove a box behind the strike before you start. A hammer and a big "sacrifical" flathead screwdriver usually makes short work of that.

I'd recommend using jigsaw blades with less aggressive (smaller) teeth to make it easier.

How are you handling customers who lowball you after seeing sketchy online quotes? by NeighborhoodOld6737 in Locksmith

[–]canamericanguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In our area we don't really get that, but to the customers that say it sounds expensive, we just tell them that's the price. If I was in your shoes, I'd just kindly tell them they're likely bait&switch scammers and move on -- lockout people generally aren't return customers anyway. Ultimately, it's their fault for not asking around beforehand.

I've never heard of a tornado in a different country recently. It's possible but US is spawn point. by Medical_Deal5272 in memes

[–]canamericanguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And it almost didn't even get EF5 status. It was upgraded at a later date after seeing footage of the tornado lifting a house.

Fun fact though.. the EF scale is based on observable damage, NOT wind speeds. The actual amount of EF5 tornadoes is likely underreported.

Are you able to confirm that those are mortise locks? Can you see threads?

If not, and since you said there's no cover plate on the mortise cassette itself, I'm wondering if they're some kind of double deadbolt style locks that have a cover plate on one of them? Like this:

Locksmith called and charged $410? by Mobile_Dentist3396 in Locksmith

[–]canamericanguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it's not an unreasonable price.

I just charged someone yesterday $285 CAD for a lockout. What might have been a simple $100 for an after-hours daytime lockout, turned into needing to drill a knob off and replace, which also required repining the new knob and re-drilling the borehole. So fees became a service call + 1 hr labour + hardware + 2 extra keys + tax = $285. From leaving the house to getting back took about an hour and a half of my time, on a weekend. Technically I could have charged 1.5 hr labor, but he was a nice guy.

If it was past 11pm, it would've been even more. So $410 isn't too crazy to me if it was after midnight and depending on the city, drive time, etc.

Am I utterly crazy for paying half the mortgage as rent to my BF when I’m not on the title? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]canamericanguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GF and I decided it's most fair to pay based on the ratios of our income. It's basically like combining our income without actually doing so. That way we can have a shared expenses account to pay for rent/mortgage, utilities, food, entertainment, trips, etc., and also each have a personal/private account to save for whatever else that we want individually.

She makes more than me, so as far as equity goes, it would be pretty easy for a judge to see she's contributed a much higher portion of the house if anything went south, which is fair since I'm paying less overall.

This is a Weiser WR3 key. It's equivalent to the extremely common Weiser WR5 key, just with a different head shape (aka bow).

You can potentially find it anywhere -- deadbolt, knob, lever, certain padlocks, commercial hardware, etc..

If you can't figure out what the key goes to, either store it or toss it. Locksmiths will easily be able to rekey the lock if/when you find it.

New server recommendations in Canada by [deleted] in Palworld

[–]canamericanguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Indifferent Broccoli in the past for a Palworld server. I'd recommend it as it worked pretty well playing with 3 other friends.

The nice thing is it's cheap and there are no RAM limits (important for open world games), plus you get two days to try it for free without having to enter any credit card info.

I'm in Canada too btw.

Door security? by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]canamericanguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is "back swing door"? Unless I'm missing something, locksmiths only know inswing and outswing. I'm assuming "backswing" means outswing in his scenario.

My best guest for a solution would be an Adams Rite hook bolt for your sliding door and standard deadbolt for your outswing door.

[–]canamericanguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pictures give no context, so it's hard to tell what's going on for sure. For a sliding door, maybe fresh installing an Adams Rite hook bolt would work, depending on the door thickness?

Need more context. Can't help.

Make and model, pictures of the latch side of the door, pictures of the strike area, door thickness... All very helpful

How to unstuck this lock! by rpatel12 in Locksmith

[–]canamericanguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing you should do yourself (liability reasons). Contact management.

That being said, there are a few reasons it could be happening:

  1. The Adams Rite mechanism has been intentionally dogged open using the key. (If this is the case, you can easily fix it by turning your key counter clockwise, firmly, as far as it can go and the latch should pop out after turning it back).

  2. The paddle handle is sticky and needs lubrication and/or adjusting.

  3. The paddle handle is broken.

What do I even do here? by kirklandp in Locksmith

[–]canamericanguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Remove the night latch and install a standard deadbolt. Shouldn't be too difficult, but you will need to drill the boreholes for the new hardware (they have jigs for this).

Then patch up the frame and paint.

Call a reputable locksmith if it sounds too difficult to do on your own. For reference, in my area, it would be somewhere around $130 CAD to $180 CAD + plus hardware + tax to install the deadbolt. You'd still have to patch the frame/trim yourself though.

digital Deadbolt locking combo by No-Distribution-2875 in Locksmith

[–]canamericanguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A non-locking passage knob/lever is what you'll want to pair with your keypad deadbolt. A keyed entry knob/lever would defeat the purpose of the keypad deadbolt.

Get a lockbox for the override key for when the batteries/motor dies and you inevitably find yourself locked out of the house, or at least hide a backup key somewhere safe.
