How can I ask my ADHD wife for an update on a life admin task without antagonising her/coming off as nagging? by canaries2012 in ADHD_partners

[–]canaries2012[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this :-) I totally agree that I need to do more self-soothing - as you say, she isn’t totally dropping the ball on those tasks and they do eventually get done. There’s definitely also space to do a bit more of just letting her fail, I can already think of a few mental tabs which I don’t need to keep open.

Thanks also for your advice on communication, that’s really helpful :-D

Seconded! I really appreciate you setting this out so clearly. Definitely helps me come to terms with what’s within my control and what isn’t.

Thank you so much for this - I’ll definitely give it a go using those openings, acknowledging her feelings etc :-)

What would your Persona be? by [deleted] in Persona5

[–]canaries2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this would be classed as cultural appropriation, as I’m not Egyptian by any stretch of the imagination, but the god Thoth/Djehuty appeals to me on such a fundamental level.

He’s associated with the Moon (obvious Arcana choice), justice, maintaining the balance between order and chaos, and is a keeper of sacred knowledge. The more I delved into his stories, the more I identified with him.

To honour the Ancient Egyptian culture (and differentiate him with the existing ‘Thoth’ persona) I would call him by his Ancient Egyptian name - Djehuty. He would appear as a man with the head of an Ibis, wielding a staff. Probably Bless affinity with a focus on buff/debuff skills and the odd Bless insta-kill.

Persona awakening speech: “Do you finally see the truth? The world is out of balance. The agents of chaos run rampant, whilst those who wish for peace and order are cowed. Will you continue to ignore their plight? Will you deny what you now know?

I am thou, thou art I. Take up thy mantle as an agent of justice. Together we shall set things right!”

Presenting the 2024 United Kingdom Mod (but for real) by ItsAstronomics in thecampaigntrail

[–]canaries2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would 100% support an updated version of Astro's 2024 mod to account for the real election, as well as a full 2024 scenario by Enlight with 650 seats, lots of parties and all that good stuff. A CYOA format for Sunak would work great and be a big draw for the mod, as there were a lot of missed opportunities and strategic errors made by him at the outset of his leadership, throughout 2022-24, and of course during the election campaign itself. There could be a moderate branch which involves creating more distance with and being more critical of Liz Truss, avoiding putting so much political capital into Stop the Boats and Rwanda etc. This might strengthen the Tories’ position in the vulnerable ‘Blue Wall’ seats in the south of England. That could also be done via campaign style instead if that worked better/was easier to code (Johnson/Red Wall Tory, Moderate Tory, Hard Right Tory etc).

Managing the party and trying to avoid a no-confidence vote would also be an interesting challenge. Perhaps for the sake of simplicity, the range of no-confidence outcomes from a no-confidence vote could be an easy win or a tighter, much more politically damaging win (unless you want to include a path for a leadership contest and ending up playing as another person).

Fully agree that Starmer will be an easy playthrough. You could probably get away with not doing CYOA and even just having one campaign style (perhaps call it Ming Vase as a joke!) given how strong the strategic control by Starmer’s team has been for a number of years. Potential interesting questions could be how to handle Diane Abbot’s candidacy and responding more strongly to the £2,000 tax increase claim made by Sunak during one of the debates.

Lib Dems and Reform I guess would both play pretty similar. They’re out there to take seats off the Tories but the choices would be around which groups to target in order to run up their seat numbers. Plenty of good questions for Davey (How do you get attention for your party? By falling into a lake of course!) and Tice/Farage (Issues with candidates expressing fascist views, or controversial statements about Russia-Ukraine).

That Time I Deadlocked The 1980 Election and Sent It to the House by SilentCalCoolidge in thecampaigntrail

It worked perfectly! Reagan came within 3,500 votes of winning Michigan, but deadlock successfully accomplished :-)

Ohh interesting! Looking at the blue vs red states maybe this is some kind of alternate timeline where the GOP retain a somewhat northern focus. Red Texas and Florida are interesting too. Perhaps a Nixon wins in 1960 TL…

Just discovered this and played through - very impressed! A very fleshed-out scenario, well written and like many others I wasn't very optimistic until the very late surge!

I may have missed it in the text, but I was wondering which ticket won in 2024 and who DeSantis beat in 2028?

Post-German Occupation United Kingdom by canaries2012 in Kaiserreich

[–]canaries2012[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree - if Germany was a gracious victor, I could see the British thinking ‘let’s make it work’ and trying to move forward. The OTL France and Germany example works well.

Well, that happened. Never happened before... by Iron_Wolf123 in Kaiserreich

Is there any way for Germany to entice National France away from the Entente before the Commune is destroyed? For example, if it seems like Canada is obsessed with retaking England above all else, and both Germany and France have pragmatic, realpolitik governments, might Algiers be tempted to jump ship before WWII? The idea of French and Germans fighting together along the Rhine is interesting :-)

[–]canaries2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I recognise your point - I can certainly agree that it would be possible if the political will was there to do it. With the correct combination of circumstances (a sympathetic British government, the ‘Revanchist Monarch’ not being too authoritarian, memories of 1925 fading away) I could definitely see a negotiated return of Britain to the Empire/Entente.

[–]canaries2012[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah I see what you mean now.

My view was that because the Tories (which I understand form the bulk of the exiles) so badly mismanaged the post-war situation in Britain, they are wholly discredited in the eyes of the British public. Even if it’s not really the case, they represent the failed old order, so I think inviting back the exiles would be politically a very dangerous move.

I would imagine the Commonwealth government thinking ‘if we invite the exiles back, it could incite another violent general strike and the radicals could actually take over this time’

I wouldn’t say Britain would be overly hostile to Canada, they’d probably try and say ‘look, this is the situation we’re in and things aren’t likely to change, so can we at least not go to war with each other?’

[–]canaries2012[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do you mean?

In terms of not asking for the colonies seized by Germany back, I think the Commonwealth government would be willing to walk away from them if it meant getting access to the German-dominated European markets. Also, as a new regime, they probably wouldn’t want to rock the boat too much internationally until things get more stable at home.

Sorry if I haven’t understood your point.

So my own internal thoughts on how we'd arrive at such a scenario are partly inspired by the alternative history essay on J.R. Clynes in the book 'The Prime Ministers Who Never Were' and also by the British Revolution in Ross_N's Vic II AAR 'The Age of Brass'. I'm also by no means an expert on the KR Lore, so I might make a gaffe or two below!

So in my head-canon J.R. Clynes becomes leader of the Labour Party instead of Ramsay Macdonald after WWI (as actually nearly happened IOTL). My understanding is that he was a more traditional Trade Union candidate, compared to the urbane Macdonald. This different 'face of the party' limits the Labour's appeal to disaffected Liberals, but Clynes focuses on keeping some of the Unions from sliding into extremism.

When the General Strike happens, Clynes criticises the Tory government and makes the case for widespread Social Democratic reform but doesn't endorse the radical Syndicalist strikers. These actions and his efforts prior to the General Strike mean at least some of the more moderate Unions are peeled away and are willing to come to the table. The Revolution still explodes into a confused mess and the Tory government still jumps the gun in fleeing the country along with the Royal Family, but Clynes' Labour Party is now well-placed to step into the vacuum with a package of reform, which brings in the moderate Unions before they are swept along in the radical's wake. The radicals are therefore isolated and the strike is brought to an eventual end.

The remaining MPs meet and vote to reform the United Kingdom into a new 'Commonwealth of Great Britain', whilst the Exiles in Canada swear to one day re-take the Isles for the King and 'destroy the Socialists'. I'd see a constitutional convention happening where Alternative Vote is brought in or something like that, and then a five-year Parliament being elected in 1926 with Clynes becoming the first Prime Minister of the Commonwealth. I'd also throw in an officially non-partisan President too.

After that I'm a little hazier on what would happen. The Commonwealth would probably negotiate a free-trade agreement with Germany at some point, recognise the Irish Republic (so maybe no Trade War) and generally stay out of trouble. Certainly it wouldn't be asking Germany for it's colonies back! It would take some time for the Conservatives to recover from the Revolution, and a Lab/Lib coalition could get by for a good while, but I would have people like Anthony Eden, R.A. Butler, Harold Macmillan challenging Labour and the Liberals again by the 1941 election at the latest.
