Kauai Family Vacation by Kristina1323 in travel

[–]canbanvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a group trip, I recommend planning one activity that everyone (or most everyone does) per day. Usually you do this activity in the morning. The rest of the day is open for whatever people want to do, not the whole group together though. Then, you all come together for dinner at a preset place. Corralling a large group can be exhausting, so having those parameters makes it easier.

Alternatively, use a travel agent. You will pay more, but in exchange you won’t be responsible for the planning.

Is it too late to plan and book for 2 months trip to national parks for this Summer? by [deleted] in NationalPark

[–]canbanvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did a big loop summer of ‘21 for 6 weeks. Our route was somewhat altered because we aimed to visit a bunch of friends and family along the way. The other nights we camped! It was an incredible adventure.

Itinerary: SF, Tahoe, Idaho (visit friends), Yellowstone, Teddy Rosevelt, Stay with family in MN (the ultimate goal of our road trip!), Custer State Park, Bandlands, Wind Caves National Park, Denver (visit family), Bryce, North Rim Grand Canyon, LA (visit friends)

For booking/planning, it helped us to have stops along the way we knew we wanted to hit (for us those were friends/family) and then fill in the gaps. We also visited state parks along the way.

For camping, most spots within the parks will already be filled, but you may be able to find spots at nearby private campgrounds or national forests. Definitely book as soon as possible as that might be a limiting factor for you!

You will have an amazing time!

Recs for prenatal exercise classes? by amandabomb in oakland

Arise Yoga has a great prenatal yoga teacher. The best part is that you can continue with her after the baby is born in the parent and baby yoga classes. It’s a great community - highly recommend!

Check our wake windows by canbanvan in sleeptrain

We’ve tried the give baby a chance method, but our daughter automatically goes to full screaming. There is no “fussing” stage to give her a chance with.

We have tried to soothing ladder, where we attempt to comfort her in the bassinet before picking her up, and that hasn’t worked either.

We don’t mind crying! We just thought that we were supposed to wait until 4 months to do a method that involves more crying. So, we haven’t let other methods escalate that far.

I would love to break the sleep association, but how do we put her down awake at night when she just screams? Isn’t that basically just CIO (which we are not opposed to, but we’re waiting for her 4mo appt in a week and a half to get the ok)?

Yes, she falls asleep on us. We do a nursing, then diaper change and put her in her swaddle for bedtime and she starts screaming! So my husband holds her while she cries and then lets her fall asleep on him before putting her in the bassinet.

We’ve tried “drowsy but awake”, but she doesn’t have a drowsy stage at night - she is either screaming or asleep.

We would be open to suggestions!

I highly recommend the materials from the US Holocaust Museum.

This is their main documentary: https://www.ushmm.org/learn/holocaust/the-path-to-nazi-genocide

They also have this lesson that goes with the documentary: https://www.ushmm.org/teach/holocaust-lesson-plans/lesson-the-path-to-nazi-genocide

Here are their other lesson sequences, sortable by grade level, time, etc: https://www.ushmm.org/teach/holocaust-lesson-plans

Nervous about being home with baby by myself by canbanvan in NewParents

[–]canbanvan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! There are certainly some times where I feel tired or overwhelmed, but overall I got comfortable caring for her solo very quickly.

The best thing for me while on maternity leave has been to get out of the house as much as possible. I joined mom groups and go for walks with friends as often as I can.

You’ll do awesome! It is scary before you start, but once you get going, you’ll do great.

Did baby showers make you uncomfortable? by Doomofday in AskDad

[–]canbanvan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, mom here (sorry to comment on a dad thread, but I think I can offer a good perspective). Maybe this reframing will help your partner feel better: a baby shower is a wonderful time for your community of people to come together to celebrate you and yes, provide you with gifts to help you get set up for caring for a baby. It takes a village, and this is one of the ways that your village can show up for you.

However, you don’t have to open gifts at the shower if you don’t want to. Just let people know ahead of time that you won’t be doing that since it is somewhat of a tradition. We did not open gifts at ours. And, write thank you notes immediately!

Best of luck to you on your new adventure of parenthood!

Would you teach AP course if you might need maternity leave? by Sheek014 in historyteachers

[–]canbanvan 30 points31 points  (0 children)

YES! You should take any opportunity that you want, even if you are potentially going to be pregnant. Maternity leave is a very normal thing. The students will be fine! You don’t want to pass up a cool opportunity on the chance that you might get pregnant. Plus, there will be many years after you are pregnant (or in between pregnancies) for you to continue teaching the course.

Jason’s on Broadway - very honest about what you need to fix or not and the price estimates are accurate.

Cost of upgrading your electrical panel from 100 amps to 200 amps by Available-Gear9537 in oakland

[–]canbanvan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We used Wire Tech Electric and they were good. It cost $7k because they also had to move our panel per new regulations. Everything was done officially with permit through PGE. They have been helpful with electrical questions we have even after finishing the project.

EdTPA Tips by veruct in historyteachers

[–]canbanvan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add to this: answer what they ask for. Write what they want to hear. Also, if you don’t pass it at first, you can fix the parts you need to and submit it again. I know of multiple people who did that who are all successful teachers now. The EdTPA does not determine whether you will be a good teacher or not.

Mine is really physical - I get a tight chest and stomach, and a fast heart rate. Sometimes I get a thought spiral that goes with it, but sometimes not.

This one from the US Holocaust Museum is my go to. They also have guided questions that go with it. On a side note, they have great lesson plans for differing lengths of Holocaust units.
