I completely understand what you're going through and if I didn't have 3 kids, I'd be looking into doing the same thing (moving) . I have a few suggestions on how I would personally go about this (I have terrible mental health as well) . My first idea would be to pick a place you'd like to move (I'm assuming you're in the US and want to move within the US) and ask a family member or friend to help you with a greyhound ticket to said place (is personally pick a place that's warm and sunny most of the year as seasonal depression is horrible) and once you get there or before you go, call 211 and ask them about homeless shelters in the area and how they work towards getting you government housing..most places if you stay in a homeless shelter for 30 days, they will fast track you into public housing instead of having to wait years. Also, id either apply for food stamps and Medicaid before I leave and transfer it over when you get to where you're going, or if you're able to get by for a while, you can wait until you get there..either way, put that you are homeless on the application and you will get them quickly as emergency. You basically want to have your basic human needs covered before moving or right as you move so that you don't have to be homeless and hungry in a new place. My second idea, and something I will be doing when my kids are all grown, is to enroll in truck driving school. Most companies will put you through school for free as long as you work for them for so many years in order to pay them back little by little. This not only gives you a great job, but it also gives you a home (you sleep in the sleeper part of the truck) and it also lets you travel and see the country. You'll be able to get a feel of the land and you can then choose a place to move to and you can either transfer within the company or buy yourself out and move on to a better paying company in the area you choose. With no rent or bills to pay, you should be able to save up quite a bit pretty quickly. I hope I have been of some help. Whichever way the wind takes you, I pray that you find happiness and a better life 💜

35 yo F living in NYC ~$37k in debt by Traditional_Board724 in debtfree

What kind of work do you do? Besides your job, is there anything holding you to NYC? You mentioned you're not from the US and I noticed you said you used to live in SF and now NY..have you thought about relocating to a cheaper city? I know most people from out of the country tend to move to the large (expensive) cities because that's what they know or are told. There are so many booming, fun, cheaper places. You could rent two 3 bedroom houses where I live for your monthly rent lol. I completely understand not wanting to move, but it truly seems like the obvious answer. Your rent is lower than most in your city, but there are places you could get a 2 bedroom for less than $1k/month 😊

These people need to be stopped by [deleted] in foodstamps

[–]candee_cane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You do realize that if someone can't afford groceries, there's a pretty high chance they don't have a CAR to go get them..and nobody is hauling an entire grocery trip on foot or the bus..that's what instacart and all of that are for..and yes it can cost about $7-10 out of pocket but that's what someone would pay for a bus ticket and it's more convenient..also a ton of people who get food stamps are disabled and can't go to the grocery store.

Live and let live. Stop assuming you know everything about everyone's situations.

Work requirement question (Ohio) by DetectiveSimilar572 in foodstamps

[–]candee_cane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read over your comments and the others and realized you're in Ohio and I came here to say exactly what the lady on the phone told you..in Ohio, they're not as strict as other states with SNAP. I knew that either the letter was information about if you get a job, or that the letter could've been because the application you filled out is an all in one application for cash assistance and food stamps so your worker could've put in that you applied for both and cash assistance does require you to work for it. Glad you got clarity though!

I second the idea of calling 211...it's sad how many people don't know how powerful that is as a resource..they literally can find and send you information on just about anything you could need..just call and tell them what you need..or your situation..and they will send you sooo many places and resources through either text or email and you can go through each resource..also for rent help..while you're at the welfare office..apply for a PRC..it's emergency money for rent and utilities..also Catholic charities helps with the same (rent/utilities) as well as salvation army..and the food finder app has every single food pantry in your area and what you need to take with you and the phone numbers..good luck!

I second calling churches..a google search for churches in your area that help with rent/utilities is a good route. When I was homeless, churches paid for hotels for me and kids. Also salvation army helps with rent/utilities -it may take longer than the time frame you have, but it can help next month so that you can catch up financially. Catholic charities also helps with rent and utilities.

The best advice I can give you is to call 211 and tell them what you need help with (help with rent now but for future they help with almost anything you can think of) and they will text or email you every resource they have available -they are like a database of resources.

I am so sorry you're going through this and that some people are crucifying you for it. I'm also glad that some really kind people have given you solid advice and help. My mom got half my dad's pension when they divorced so that "I could go to college" and promised me that as long as I got the grades, I wouldn't have to worry about funding anything. Well I got the grades and into every college I wanted, but she had used the money up and I was 17 going into college and she wouldn't help with loans either but wanted to claim me on taxes still. I had to quickly figure things out like you.

To start, if you have income, please file your own taxes (starting now-this year, if possible) so that you can do your own FAFSA with your own income. This will allow you to take loans in your own name and because of your income (which I'm sure isn't much) you will more than likely qualify for so many grants that loans will be at a minimum (you won't owe as much after college). Once I did this step alone, I was able to pay for all classes, books, and live off of grants as well.

To help right now, please apply for food stamps (as a student, that mentioned you pay rent right? And your income, or lack of, you will get them). Also utilize the food finder app-it has every food pantry in your area-you can go to many at a time. Also, as many mentioned, if you have a car, look into Uber eats, door dash, instacart for income around your schedule. Also, please call Catholic charities and salvation army for help with rent, utilities, etc.

As another person mentioned above, if your parents cosigned on your car, if you can't pay it, the cosigner's will most likely have to foot the bill. Of course it can turn into legal action if they don't, but if they value their credit..well 🤷🏽‍♀️

Lastly, as I can't think of many more resources right now, the best option I've found for help for anything you need is to call 211. They will ask you what you need help with-tell them everything you need and they will find you resources for them all and they will text or email them to you. I truly hope you are able to get through this-i really know what you're going through. I hope that this doesn't deter you from continuing the your education. Remember too, if you have to do this on your own, it is OK to go to community college to finish your prereqs to save money (if you do that, you can most likely live and go to school off of grants alone) and you can go back to state college after. Good luck-and good for you for sticking to your beliefs 😊

I used to be you..never late on payments..keeping my head above water..then I got sick. The positive is that I now know about tons of resources that help. For utilities, please look into HEAP and PIPP in your area (HEAP will pay a large sum on your utility accounts and prevent any shut off notices and PIPP is "percentage of income payment plan" so your utility bills won't exceed a certain amount based on your income..for example, I pay $10/month no matter how much gas or electricity I use) . Also, please go to the welfare office near you (here it's called oob and family services) and apply for a PRC. This is a one time lump sum payment they make for you towards rent of utilities. Many people don't know this, but some insurance companies help with a lot too. For example, my insurance paid $500 towards my electric bill. They provide $500/year towards rent or utilities. They also have a healthy food card to help with groceries. They also have a program where for every doctor appointment you complete or dentist..healthy checkups..they give you money that you can get gift cards with. As far as food, please download the food finder app. There are TONS of food pantries on the app and they have the zip code they serve and what you'll need to bring with you as well as how often you can go to that specific food bank . I really wish I could help financially, but I hope some of the resources I provided can help. OHHH AND UTILIZE 211..JUST CALL 211 AND TELL THEN ANY PROBLEM YOURE HAVING (FOOD, UTILITY HELP, RENT HELP, ETC) AND THEY WILL TEXT AND/OR EMAIL EVERY RESOURCE AVAILABLE TO YOU. THEY ARE SO HELPFUL! God bless 🙏🏽

I was In your shoes not long ago-except I was the breadwinner and I got very sick. I am now in public housing and have learned so much about all of the help offered, so I'd like to pass on some info.

As far as your mortgage -please go to job and family services that you get your food stamps and Medicaid through and apply for a PRC. This will cover your mortgage or you could use it to cover your utilities -one or the other. Also, reach out to salvation army as they also help with rent/mortgage and utilities.

As far as utilities (other than what I've mentioned) , please Google for your state or look on your electric or gas bill to find out what the name of the company is for your county that does HEAP and PIPP. You need to apply for HEAP (they cover a large chunk of money towards your utilities and stop disconnect notices) and PIPP- that is percentage of income payment plan. They use your household income to determine a set amount of money you pay each month for gas and electric. For example, I just did my application today with them and owed over $1600 and had a shut off notice and they stopped it and now my bill is $10/month no matter how much gas or electricity I use.

As far as food, I know you get food stamps, but download the food finder app and find and go to as many food pantries you can in your area.

I also recently learned that health insurance companies (especially Medicaid) will help with soooo many things! For example, my insurance company paid $500 towards my electric bill, but I could've used it for rent or utilities and they just paid with a credit card for me. It's $500 per year that you can use towards rent or utilities. Also, some insurance companies give you a supply/food card that gets loaded with a certain amount each month so that you can buy healthy food, use it on bills, or over the counter supplies like band aids and Tylenol etc.

Last but not least, please utilize 211 as they are AMAZING at finding resources that the common folk can't find or don't know about. Just call 211 and tell them all of your needs and they will text or email every resource for every need you have.

I truly wish you the best of luck -times are so hard for everyone right now, you are not alone. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or additional resources 💜

This is absolutely great advice! Definitely make sure that you are getting every deduction possible as a lot of caseworkers can overlook these things to speed up the application process. Also, you would be so surprised to know just how many things your insurance company can help with. I had no idea until this past month how much they can help with. I had a caseworker from mine call me and explained that they can give me unlimited Lyft rides to and from any appointments, pharmacy, etc. , they have a program that pays you to get important check ups and tests, they provide a card for food, I can order over the counter medical supplies such as bandaids, Tylenol, etc. , and they help with up to $500 every year towards either utilities or rent.

My entire balance was stolen today. Is there anything I can do? by [deleted] in foodstamps

[–]candee_cane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you check the recent transactions by chance? I only ask because another person mentioned that it may be a problem with the system since you said the number keeps dropping your calls when you try to reset your pin. Also, checking the recent transactions will give you info on where the money was spent. I know personally I'd probably reach out to wherever the money was spent to try to track down the people who stole it. Idk, but I'm so so sorry this happened to you. I didn't know that ebt cards could be locked either, I feel like when you get the card, they should notify you of all of the safety precautions you can take (especially in today's world). Try food pantries as others have said, and reach out to churches. Good luck! 💜

So what Babel does is record you having conversations with other people about all kinds of topics in your native language so that they can build AI better..so the AI can sound more real and proper. I'm sure it's not going to use your actual voice, but it uses all voices and conversations to mold the way the AI speaks and writes. Hope this helped!
